QUICK FACTS AND SPECIES INFORMATION
_Q:_ Where are Common Garter Snakes From?
_A:_ Common Garter Snakes are a North American Snake Species. They
are the most commonly found snake in North America and are found
farther north than any other snake species in North America.
_Q:_ How large do Common Garter Snakes Get?
_A:_ Common Garter Snakes are a fairly small snake species. Adults
can be expected to grow between 20 and 49 inches in length. They vary
in size greatly by geographic locale but a large Garter Snake is
usually no more than 3 1/2 feet long.
_Q: _Are they easy to keep in captivity?
_A:_ Garter Snakes can do very well in captivity. They are quite easy
to take care of and do not require as much of a heat source as some
other snake species. A terrarium roughly 3 feet long should be more
than large enough for an adult snake.
_Q:_ What do Garter Snakes Eat?
_A:_ In the wild Garter Snakes prey on a variety of foods but mostly
frogs and other amphibians. Occasionally earthworms and small pinkie
mouse may be taken. In captivity the preferred food for adult garter
snakes is either small mice or pinkies or fuzzy mice (for smaller
snakes). Juevnile snakes may be fed small earthworm's cut to size or
the odd small minnow. In general try to keep the food source no
thicker in girth than the widest part of the snakes body.
_Q:_ What items will I need to purchase to house a snake comfortably?
_A:_ Before purchasing a snake from a respected snake shop we highly
recommend reading about the species and learning if it will be right
for you. Our Common Garter Snake Care Guide is the perfect start and
even includes handy plans for building a custom professional looking
display enclosure for your snake. Along with this information the main
items you will need are: Information, a suitably sized enclosure, a
water dish, suitable substrate for the enclosure, a hiding area within
the enclosure (that your snake can completely fit inside), a reptile
light source, under tank heater (if necessary), a temperature gauge,
and feeding hemostats. A month or so of food is also recommended to
keep on hand.
