You see as founder and president of the Tested Selling Institute, Elmer Wheeler spent years working out 105,000 word combinations for 5,000 different products and testing them on 19,000,000 people to find the single most effective selling phrase for each product.
Wheeler’s words worked magic for his struggling depression-era clients:
A single sentence he developed for hand lotion increased in a single store from 60 to 927 units each week.
Two “Tested Selling Sentences” Wheeler created for a toothbrush company caused four famous department stores to sell out of this staple item for the first time ever.
His tested combination of words for selling coffee and tea closed the deal 78% of the time at Macy’s.
The selling statement he created for a shoe polish company increased sales 300%. Sales in one store alone went from 2,500 to 30,000 units a month.
A phrase that Wheeler developed for Sears, Roebuck made 20% of shoppers purchase expensive electrical appliances.
He came up with a tested sentence for a shaving cream manufacturer than increased sales 102%. Convinced that he could do better, Elmer created an even better sales approach that increased sales by 300% when tested in one of Cleveland’s leading department stores!
Wheeler developed a single phrase for another company that saved them $7,000 in delivery costs during its first six months of use. This was real money in those days.
He made Hoover vacuum cleaners a household name. Its president and founder H.W. Hoover thought so much of Wheeler that he wrote the foreword to “Tested Sentences That Sell.”
He came up with a strategy that made price irrelevant for a high-end grocery store. It soon sold it’s entire stock of tinned expensive sardines costing 2.5 times the competitor.
The two word phrase he created for selling Coca-Cola at the soda counter doubled the size of the sale in 7 out of 10 cases. A similar campaign for malted milk was equally successful in convincing customers to add at least one egg to their drink 70% of the time.
When Texaco was coming out with a new brand of motor oil, they paid him $5000 (in the 1930’s!) for a seven word phrase that worked 58% of the time and helped Texaco dealers get under a quarter of a million hoods in one week.
Wheeler Teaches America To Sell
But Wheeler was not content to just sit back and grow rich off his high-priced consulting gigs.
He began sharing the principles of sales success with others and started teaching his Wheelerpoints to a nation of sales professionals. Wheeler soon became a household name in America, earning him the nickname of “America’s Greatest Salesman”.
Just look at some of what he accomplished in his second career as an author, sales trainer, and lecturer:
He wrote 21 books on sales. Many made the New York Times Best Seller List, a feat unheard of for books on selling. Wheeler’s books were devoured by both salesmen and the general public. He often told the story of sitting in the barber chair and having his favorite barber successfully use his own techniques on him.
Wheeler was voted the most outstanding public speaker in America and he gave his famous speech, "Selling the Sizzle”, more 6,000 times to more than 2 million people. The sales lecture he gave to an audience of 20,000 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas set a record for a non-political speech.
He was highly respected by his peers and when he spoke to sales professionals, it was to standing room only crowds. Here’s what the New York Times had to say about one of his appearances: “Elmer Wheeler did it again yesterday. He packed the Henry Hudson Room of the Roosevelt Hotel for the weekly meeting of the Sales Executive Club of New York and left 300 people standing outside.”
He founded the Elmer Wheeler Sales Training Institute and that trained thousands of salesmen and women throughout the United States and abroad. There were in addition to the hundreds of Sizzle Schools he conducted for his corporate clients.
He was a guest on numerous TV and radio shows and made his trademark expression… “Sell The Steak, Not The Sizzle” part of the American vocabulary.
Wheeler wrote a weekly newspaper column, Success Secrets, that appeared in hundreds of newspapers throughout the United States. He interviewed over 1,000 movers and shakers and distilled the secrets of success into his Master Formula, a simple-to-follow six-step way to make dreams come true.
