What Is Cartoon Paint?

You  may be asking yourself, what the heck  is Cartoon Paint and what is it all about.  First off, my name is Chad Baldwin and I have been creating cartoons as long as I can remember…  I love drawing cartoons so much that I have worked hard to create cartoons for other people.  The bottom line is if you enjoy creating cartoons, why not make a little money too!

As a cartoon illustrator.  I have been asked many times as to how I render (color) my cartoons onto the computer??  So, since I also enjoy creating websites I thought, why not create a site that shows off my cartoon rendering process.  So, to keep it sweet and simple,  Cartoonpaint.com is a place that focuses on how I go about coloring my cartoons onto the computer.  If you have a cartoon style and want to take it to the next level, try out my course.  I think you will like how the digital process works.

Take Your Cartoons to a Proffessional Level?

Have you ever drawn onto the computer?  Or have you taken and scanned your cartoon illustration into the computer but don’t really know how to take it to the next level?  Maybe you have already got some idea as to how to render or color your cartoons on the computer but would love to push it to a more professional level?  If this is the case, CartoonPaint.com is a great place for you to learn and advance your skills.  I have spent a lot of time creating these training videos and feel very confident you will learn a great deal of information.

The Benefit of Creating “Digital Cartoons”

Now days you see more and more artists going digital.  I feel the biggest benefit with creating digital cartoons is the speed you have over traditional painting.  If you mess up, no worries just simply undo it!!  If you would like to make a living with creating cartoon illustrations.  There are always deadlines.  With the digital medium you always have to remember just like traditional painting, the computer is only a tool.  However, if you use the tools correctly and build up the experience you will find the digital medium allows for so many possibilities at such little time. Let me walk you step by step and show you how I take a sketch and use layers to ad the color, shading and lighting. The sky is the limit.

Chad’s Training Course.  What’s inside?
The heart of the Training Course consists of three high quality videos.  All videos together are over 2 hours and 20 minutes long.  All downloadable as a QuickTime file.  You can view a sample of the videos below and also click on the images to see screen shots of the video at actual size.

I also provide a PDF document that lists the shortcut keys I use most often.  Learning the key commands will speed up your cartoon creating process in return making your clients happy.

Providing you with the three brushes I use most often will also be included.  I even give you a intro video welcoming you into the training course and also showing you how to install the brushes into Painter.

What if I Don’t Have Corel Painter!
If you do not have Corel Painter no problem.   If you decide to purchase my program, I will supply you with a link to where you can download a trial version of Corel Painter for free.  So this way you can get started right away.  If you want download the trial version right now! This 23 minute video walks you into basic settings that i use in Corel Painter.
Most customers that have purchased my course so far don’t even own Adobe Photoshop or Corel Painter.  The last couple of responses I got from my customers were.  How they were curious as to what was involved with the digital cartoon process. So they bought the course.

In video 01 You will see how I setup the canvas and talk about basic resolution setup.  Example, If you were to print your final illustrations out. You will want to have a higher resolution in mind. I typically set my resolution to 300dpi. This gives you a nice clean and sharp print out if you were to send it to the printer.

I also talk about setting the paper color of the canvas. I find if you have a background color. It's easier to see the holes that you miss when painting. Also, when you start to add lighting. It's much nicer to see the highlights on the character when you have a darker background color.

Video 01 is more directed to people who have none or little knowledge as to how to setup a basic document.
This 45 minute video takes you through the basic layering process that I use.  Layers is a big part of my digital process.  If you have never used layers before you will quickly see that using layers can be really cool.  Layers allows for so much more control over your masterpiece.

This video demonstrated how when using layers properly, you have the ability to lock just the layer you want to focus on.  So if it is the arm you want to work on. You can work on just the arm.  Getting the shading and lighting just the way you want it without affecting anything else on your canvas.

Every time I show someone how to use layers on their cartoon illustration.  They are always in awe as to the possibilities.  I remember using layers for the first time and just hating it!  It was not fun at all.  The reason why I hated layers so much is because I didn’t understand what they were used for.  Using layers properly you will very quickly start to see a more professional looking piece!!  Not only that but it is a lot of fun!
So if you are just starting out with using layers.  You really do have to take a look at this video.

This 1hour and 20 minute video takes both Video 01 “Software Intro” and Video 02 “The Basics” and combines the techniques learned.   With video 03 I am now able to take the digital medium to a more advanced route.  Since we have the basics all covered now I go into more detail as far as lighting and shading.  Giving my cartoons that 3D appearance.

Since computer generated cartoons have came out,  I was in awe as to how they looked.  So real, but still a cartoon.  I try to strive for that 3D generated look or feel.

If you are looking to add that extra dimension to your cartoon characters I think you will enjoy this video!
