Let me tell you about my background.

I was born and raised in a poor area of London. I was one of five children, all living in a small 3-bedroom house. We were poor. We could only afford the basics of food and our clothes were all hand-me-downs or second-hand. We didn’t have holidays and we never ate out in restaurants.

My parents still wanted me to have a good education, so I used to walk five kilometres to the ‘best’ school in the area (and walk five kilometres back!).

Whilst still at school, my first job was a petrol pump attendant earning $3.5 an hour (based on today’s rate). I did 8 hours a week. But that wasn’t enough, so in addition I started collecting football pool coupons, door-to-door. Commission based, earning $8 an hour (again at today’s rate). But that still wasn’t enough, so I started working in a DIY retail store earning $4 an hour.

With all 3 jobs, I was earning $100 a week for 22 hours work. Remember this is at today’s rate (after inflation). I paid my way and gave my mum $20 each week.

I left school and went to college, but dropped out after 1 year because I chose to work and earn money.

You Have Choices

I soon realised that in life you have choices. You can choose to be positive and live life to the full or let life control you and be negative. I took the positive choice. I was driven because I wanted a better lifestyle than what I was used to.

My first full-time role, earning $15,000 (at today’s rate with inflation), was for a company in the City of London as a Pensions Clerk, at the age of 19.

I still had never been on holiday and I wanted one, and on my salary, I had to save for six months. After six months of hard saving, I had my first holiday – Italy. It was great fun.

But I saw others having two or three holidays a year, having the latest flashy cars and eating out. I wanted some of that. To tell you the truth I was envious. I quickly saw there was a common denominator – they were all managers / leaders. They made the decisions, made things happen and as a result were highly paid for it.

I had to find a way to become a manager. But I was a nobody and I needed to be somebody. I needed to be seen and be in demand. So I decided to make a difference. I worked the extra hours, I volunteered for tasks over and above my day job, I always delivered high quality work, I offered and provided support to my co-workers, I talked to the managers and told them I was interested in becoming a manager. My boss started to take notice. Others were talking highly of me. Then one day I was asked the ultimate question – ‘Would you like to become one of our managers?’

A New, In-Demand, Money Boosting Career...

I was over the moon, I was jumping for joy, I was ecstatic. Of course, I accepted. I had worked hard and wanted to be a manager and earn more money. I was ready (or so I thought!). How wrong could I be!

In my early years of being a Manager, I was really struggling.

I used to lie awake worrying about questions like those listed above. I could not ask anyone for advice or support – I would have looked stupid! I was employed to do a good job but I just did not know what to do.

Therefore, I had to learn the hard-way. Making mistakes, doing things wrong. Missing out on promotions. Not getting the extra bonuses.

I was resentful for missing out. I wanted a successful career and enjoyable life. I started to blame my boss, the company, the customers and my family. I started to jump from company to company. I was blaming everyone and everything else, instead of myself. I was definitely a member of the Manic Group of managers. I was working longer and longer hours and not for the money, I wanted. In fact at one stage I was about to be fired. Imagine that – a new rookie manager with limited knowledge - and about to be out of a job!

I decided enough was enough. I had to change fast to become the manager I wanted and knew I could be. I had to make the difference myself.

I read all the self-help books and manuals that were available. I made pages and pages of notes. I borrowed money and I attended courses, conferences, seminars – I literally spent $10,000’s to get my career on track. I asked lots of questions and tried all the tips and techniques listed. I made notes on the ones, which worked and disregarded those, which didn’t. I began to understand how easy it was to be a member of the In-Control Group of managers!

I suddenly was seeing how to move from the Manic to the In-Control Group of Managers. Managing staff, building rapport with customers, managing your boss, delegation, delivery after delivery after delivery. I was getting noticed! I was getting the attention. The senior bosses wanted me on their teams, because if I over delivered, it made them look good and if they look good (because of you), you are fully supported and well rewarded.

As a result, one year I was promoted twice and gained a 30% increase in my earnings. Another time I was ‘headhunted’. I received a call from an employment agency offering me a huge pay rise if I were to move companies, no interview, nothing, I just had to turn up on Monday. What a buzz I got from that, my confidence was sky high. I was becoming well known in the ‘management market’ and all because I had decided to change my approach, put in the hard effort up-front and now it was easy.
