"Laugh Your Way to Understanding Piano Music and Technique."

Finally, a Piano Guide That Talks to Beginner Piano Students, not Above Them!

How does a student who knows NOTHING about piano playing learn from a manual? In order to answer this question, it's good to know which two types of manuals you should avoid:
Beginner piano books that give you too much information and non-effective instructions.

Old music books that have had food repeatedly spilled on them, especially if you can still identify the scent of the food.
Beginner piano books should make you feel like someone is
talking to you in a friendly manner.

As for the content, piano playing is about more than just reading music. Ask yourself these questions about what you need in an online piano method:
Are you learning how to read notes efficiently and finding your way around the keyboard?

Are there hints on counting out rhythms in music?

Are you learning how to effectively master some piano pieces?

Are there useful hints on proper hand shape?
Two main problems arise when keeping the above points in mind. First, most piano books don't cover all of the material. Second, those that do l often do so in a dry, lifeless, anemic, "I'm dying of boredom, so please kill me now" manner.

Other books claim that only their "secret" techniques will make you into a concert pianist. They warn against other manuals that teach you "fatal mistakes" or the "wrong" way to play. Only their amazing new-age "look, I'm only practicing 2 minutes a day and I'm amazing" system works.

I am really sorry to burst the bubble on that one, but learning to play the piano, or any other instrument for that fact, takes lots of hard work and practice.

Here's the bottom line. If your beginner piano methods and books aren't fun, you will probably quit in a matter of weeks. Unfortunately, if you quit there's a good chance that you will never try again...once burnt, twice shy.

Dear Daniel and Joe,

Congratulations on promoting a package that is informative and fun. I am particularly impressed with the video attachments that show how the hands are placed on the piano. When I took lessons years ago there was not a choice to be had. This is a fun program and a very inexpensive way for beginners to start out to test the waters.  I would highly recommend this to young and old alike. Well done!

Wait a minute. Who are you guys, what makes you experts, and why should I listen to you?

Let's introduce ourselves. Daniel E. Friedman and Joseph Shalita have been friends for about twenty years. They met while studying for their respected music degrees at the Peabody Institute of John Hopkins University.

Daniel is a composer and pianist who has written over 80 orchestral, chamber and solo compositions. They have been played across Canada, in the USA and overseas. His music has been broadcast on CBC television, PBS, Newton Cable and CFMK FM.

Daniel received his Bachelor of Music from Queens University in Canada, and his Masters Degree from the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. He is currently head of the music department at Town Center Montessori Private school, and has been a lecturer at McGill University in Montreal.

Joe received his Bachelor of Music at the Peabody Conservatory of Music and his Masters Degree from the Mannes College of Music in New York. He is currently principal oboe of the State of Mexico Symphony Orchestra and a member of the Mexico City Woodwind Quintet. Joe is professor of oboe and chamber music studies at the Olin Yolitly conservatory and the Mexican National Center for the Arts. He has also been involved in the commisions of over 30 new works for woodwind quintet.

Let's face it. Learning should be fun.

I've always felt that laughing is learning. The reason Dan and Joe's Survival Manual for New Piano Students was written, was because I was very frustrated by how dull and uninteresting so many beginner piano books are... and most of them take themselves far too seriously!

No one wants to start a hobby by being lectured to.

Friendly guidance, laughter and useful information are the way to go when teaching music, or any academic subject for that matter.

"Dan and Joe's Survival Manual for New Piano Students is a smart and fun way to teach kids piano. The live lessons and jokes are a great way to get young people interested in pursuing piano. So many online lessons are dry and do not show the finished product. It is great to see that piano can be taught in a way that speaks to the individual on a personal level. These lessons are a great starter for anyone interested in piano regardless of age!"

Jordan Safer
McGill 4th year undergraduate student

Another key element that is very important to have is video footage. This is important since there's no live person available to demonstrate to you how a piece or scale should be executed when you're reading a manual.

A video, like a picture, is a valuable replacement for thousands of words. I learned an enormous amount by simply watching my piano teacher's hands perform on a piano. Sure, some books provide audio clips rather than videos. However, the more senses you use to learn, the faster you will pick things up. A book with video clips accelerates your learning substantially. Here is an example of one of the videos in the book:

Dan and Joe's Survival Manual for New Piano Students provides our online students with video clips, charts, guidance and light-hearted jokes (we even throw in some heavy-handed ones).

How is the book set up?

Dan and Joe's Survival Manual For New Piano Students is an ebook which is viewed with Adobe Acrobat Reader, (available for free at Adobe.com.) There are 40 videos included with the ebook which demonstrates all of the material discussed in the book.

Here is just a small sample of what you will learn:
Learn how to read notes efficiently.
Hints on counting out rhythms in music.
How to practice. Find your way around the keyboard. Hints on proper hand shape. Finger strength and wrist flexibility. Tips on scale, chord and arpeggio execution. How to buy a piano.
Can we guarantee that you will be playing piano quickly and with the ability to impress your friends, family, and close neighbors?

No. That would not be right. If you work hard and practice often, you will be able to do amazing things with the keyboard. We don't believe in a lot of marketing hype.

So who is this program for and what will you guarantee me?

Dan and Joe's Survival Manual for New Piano Students is just what it says. It is for people of all ages who are beginning to study piano and would like to start off on the right foot with some great information presented in a nice friendly manner.

What I will grantee is that if you don't like the book, you can ask for a refund up to 60 days after you purchase, no questions asked.

Thank you for this excellent e-book. In the last week, I’ve been practicing your step-by-step manual and I have found it to be very friendly, funny and easy to follow. Hey, I can play some scales and pieces and it’s only been a couple of weeks! By the way, I loved the video demonstrations that came with the book.
