Combating Restless Leg Syndrome

Don't let Restless Leg Syndrome keep you from doing the things you enjoy!

"Restless Leg Syndrome does not have to control your life."

Break free from RLS symptoms. You don't have to suffer any longer.

Dear Friend -
I am so happy you
found this site!
Why? Because, like me, you've struggled with a condition that
so little is known about, but that effects you every single day... or
more accurately every single night!
It hits just when all you want to do is sit down and relax... only
you can't.
Just as you get comfortable your legs start to get that itchy, creepy
crawly feeling...you have to move them or you'll go crazy.

Do any
of these Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) symptoms sound familiar...

Insistent,
unpleasant sensations deep inside your legs that can feel like
creeping, crawling, tingling, burning, pulling - even pain - anywhere
along your legs (on one or both sides) from your thigh to your
ankle.
Moving
your legs makes these awful sensations go away... for
a little while at least.
Lying down or sitting (like on a cross country flight) is a torture
test to keep still and suffer through the awful, nagging, relentless
sensations
in your legs.
Everything's
worse in the evening and during the night.
You toss and turn in bed, trying to get comfortable.
Falling asleep
is nearly impossible... just as you start to drift
off; you have that irresistible urge to move... again.
When you do manage to get to sleep, you may find yourself jolted
awake by involuntary leg (and sometimes even arm) movements.
You're dragging during the day... sleepy and totally drained,
yet you just don't sleep well at night - your best rest
seems to come from 4:00 to 6:00 in the morning.
Your symptoms
are intermittent... coming on for months at a
time and then disappearing for no reason. Just when you think these
awful,
irritating feelings are gone for good, they return again.
You've gone to your doctor, maybe even had a few tests, only to
be told there's nothing wrong... or worse, it's all
in your head.
Your mother
or father, maybe even a brother or sister seems to have the very
same problem... and no answers to it either.

If you're nodding "yes" to
one (or more) one of these, I know I can help you...
What's happening is not your fault ... the awful sensations... the
constant exhaustion... the quirky set of symptoms that turn out to
be nothing. It's unbelievably frustrating.

When my doctor finally, came up with a diagnosis for the uncomfortable
feelings I'd been experiencing, after almost six months of exams
and tests, I was actually glad - at least I had a name for
it.

As it turns out Restless Legs Syndrome affects more women than
men - especially
those of us in our forties, fifties and sixties.

In fact, I learned that experts believe that from 5% to 12% of
people in the United States and Europe deal with this frustrating,
little-understood,
but absolutely life altering condition.

Here are some things about RLS that you need to know. Don't be surprised
that even your own doctor doesn't know some of the things you're
about to learn...

"Combating
Restless Legs Syndrome Is A Plain Speaking Resource For Anyone Trying
To Cope
With RLS"
It was a feeling
that's so hard to describe... deep in my calves
this creepy crawly sensation would start and build until I could not
keep from moving my legs. I couldn't relax...

And sleep...? well that was next to impossible.

I couldn't sit still for more than a few minutes... which made
a cross country flight to see my newborn granddaughter totally impossible.

I knew I had to do something. I started with my own doctor... had lots
of tests... and was told it was "nothing". But I knew it
was something, and I didn't stop until I had a name for the intense,
uncomfortable sensations that I know now as Restless Legs Syndrome.

It's this journey from those frustrating, restless nights when
I could not relax and get comfortable to finding the treatment that worked
to make my RLS a non issue (and let me make that flight in comfort) that
is at the heart of Combating Restless Legs Syndrome.

You should know I'm not a doctor or specialist. In fact, I'm
not a medical person at all. I'm a just patient (like you) who was
struggling with terribly uncomfortable symptoms that were getting worse
not better... trying to cope with fatigue that interfered at work and
at home... and looking for ways to get this nagging, maddening problem
under control and take back my life.

After some determined digging, I was able to find the solution that was
right for me. Today I'm comfortable and able to sit and just relax... go
to the movies... attend a class, and most importantly of all, fly across
country in comfort... to see my beautiful new granddaughter.
In fact; I'm feeling better than I have in a very long time.

I wrote Combating Restless Legs Syndrome for anyone who is still struggling
with the nagging discomfort, the constant urge to move, the inability
to sit... all the terrible, disruptive symptoms of RLS and looking
for answers.

"Restless
Legs Syndrome Basic Facts You Need To Know"

You need to know
exactly what you're dealing with so you can eliminate
the disruptive, distracting and uncomfortable Restless Legs Syndrome
symptoms from your life, for good.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a believed to be a sleep related disorder
where patients experience unpleasant sensations in one (or both) legs... sometimes
the arms too. It's often a creeping... crawling... tingling... pulling
feeling. For some there is pain. Usually confined to the legs, the
sensations can be felt anywhere from the thigh to the ankle - though
most often in the calves.

The one thing that all RLS patients share is the irresistible urge
to move when the feelings hit... walking, rubbing, massaging or moving the
legs can all bring relief... for a while at least.

Restless Legs Syndrome symptoms are known to follow a regular daily
pattern (you've probably noticed this already) and are almost always worse
at night, better in the morning. You may find that you get your best sleep
from 4:00 to 6:00 in the morning... and this too is common with
RLS.

The irresistible urge to move disrupts the sleep of many RLS sufferers... leaving
you feeling totally wiped out during the day a few days each week or
all the time.

Part of this lack of good sleep may also be due to a related disorder
that a majority of RLS patients (though certainly not all) also seem
to have,
known as Periodic Limb Movements in Sleep (PLMS).

This condition
causes involuntary, jerking or bending movements of your legs while
you're asleep. Patients can do this hundreds of times
each night - sometimes hard enough to wake them and anyone sleeping
with them.

Diagnosing Restless Legs Syndrome can be tricky... mainly because
some doctors still don't believe it even exists.

Many patients, like me, have physicals and blood work that shows nothing
out of the ordinary. Sometimes your doctor could send you for a neurological
exam to help rule out other conditions that often mimic RLS symptoms.
When that comes back normal you might have an overnight sleep study to
see if PLMS or other sleep problems are present.

And while Restless Legs Syndrome isn't crippling or life threatening,
it does present sufferers with many challenges.

Sitting for long periods is just about impossible... making a cross-country
flight, a long car ride... watching a movie or a lengthy meeting
a torturous endurance test.

The good news is that the prognosis for Restless Legs Syndrome has never
been better. With the condition becoming more widely known and understood
RLS is gaining acceptance by the medical community and becoming the focus
of lots of new research.

"Your
Restless Legs Syndrome Symptoms"

You need to know
if what you have is really Restless Legs Syndrome. And since there
is no test to diagnose this uncomfortable, disruptive
condition,
here are some ways to tell...

For some, the onset of RLS is slow, and gradual... sometimes symptoms
even disappear altogether... only to return months or years later.

My RLS first started to bother me when I was pregnant with my own children... but
it got better afterward. Only years later did I start to have that
terribly creepy feeling come back to my legs...
always at night... always
when I'd just sat down to relax from a hectic day. Like me, you've
probably found how moving makes the sensations stop, at least for a
little while. They always come back.

Add to this the sense of overwhelming exhaustion that saps your strength
in both mind and body. Even when you allow enough time for a good night's
sleep... you don't seem to get it. You're lying there,
just about to fall off when your legs start to itch... to feel that
creepy crawly feeling and you absolutely can't stay motionless - you've
got to get up, whether you want to or not.

You're so miserable... so tired and uncomfortable that you've
probably already gone to the doctor... like I did. You've talked
about what you're feeling, had an examination and been told nothing
seems to be wrong... yet you know something's not right. You
just can't sit still. You can't relax. You can't even
enjoy a movie or show like you used to. You can't travel by car,
train or airplane. It's totally frustrating.
Which leads me to everybody's next question...

"What
Caused Your Restless Legs Syndrome?"

No one knows exactly what causes RLS but there are lots of emerging
theories and more research being done today than ever before.

There does appear to be a strong genetic link... if you've got
a close family member with RLS, chances are higher that you'll develop
it too. For others, symptoms appear during the last trimester of pregnancy
(in many as one in seven women)... but they never progress to be
a real, lasting problem. But they can return later in life, like mine
did.

In other cases, RLS is thought to be linked to factors such as low
iron levels or anemia, or as the result of a chronic disease like kidney
failure,
diabetes, Parkinson's disease or peripheral neuropathy. For some
patients nerve damage may be to blame for the symptoms, and treating
the underlying condition often provides relief from RLS.

Something else to watch for in RLS can be medications you might be
taking... not
knowing they are actually making your symptoms worse.

Medicines to prevent nausea, seizures or antipsychotic drugs (even
some over the counter cold or allergy medications) can all cause RLS
symptoms.

Of course, the symptoms can also be triggered by alcohol, tobacco and
caffeine, though no one knows if eliminating these things will keep
RLS from striking.

So, you need to know about your treatment options.

Legs Syndrome Treatment Options"
