For many years I was the Managing Director of a company involved in a very competitive field of business. There were a number of other companies in our city selling products very similar to ours. They cut prices to the bone in order to get the sale. That's the way most of them operated.
The general attitude seemed to be: "Whatever you can sell I can sell cheaper!"
It was clear to me that if I was forced to adopt the same policy of selling goods at such ridiculously low prices, it would lead to bankruptcy.
But I was at a loss to know what to do about the situation.
When I lost sales to business rivals, I felt the only reason the customer had not bought from me was because of the special cut price offered by another company.
But after a while, I started to give a great deal of thought to the sales I had lost. It dawned upon me there might be other reasons why I lost these sales, apart from price. Although price is a very important factor in any buying decision, I knew it wasn't the only factor.
Thinking back about these "lost sale" incidents, I realized the fault quite probably was mine. I had failed to communicate with the customer in the right way; or I had failed to use the most suitable closing techniques.
I decided to immediately involve myself in a detailed study of professional salesmanship and investigated the subject from every angle, with special emphasis on closing techniques.
A lot of the material I studied was very old-fashioned and out-of-date, so I set about devising a number of innovative, original and very effective ways to persuade customers to buy from our company rather than from our competitors.
I started using the unusual, highly effective, original closing techniques I developed.. These closing techniques had very little to do with price but they still encouraged customers to make immediate buying decisions.
These closing techniques made it possible for me to close sales far more easily and effectively than I had ever been able to do before.
It was an exciting experience to find customers making definite decisions to buy without hesitating and delaying in the way most of them had done before.
It was very encouraging to see how well these sales strategies worked! Sales volume started to increase rapidly. What was more satisfying was that goods were being sold at decent margins. There was so serious price cutting.
