Network Marketing (or MLM) - Is it a Dream or Nightmare?
You may have heard of many MLM success stories, such as making "$XXXXX" amount of money in "X" amount of time. These stories sometimes attract an influx of people who believe if they follow the steps from these so called "gurus", they can achieve the result too.
For every one success story you hear, there are 9 untold hidden failure stories.
Success stories inspire, failure stories teach. Why? Because failure is where true lesson is. You learn more from failure, it serves as a true guide on what you should and should not do.
Very often, success is a poor teacher because it tends to make you believe you are infallible, and you tend to overlook on some of the pitfalls.
I am going to share my true story with you. This is not a story to inspire you on how you can achieve your financial freedom dream in MLM, but this is a story to teach you how you can make the right choice in MLM opportunities.
For the interest of the individual MLM companies and distributors, I am not revealing the names of the company I joined here and some of the distributors' name.
A few years ago, I responded to an online "work at home" advertisement and was contacted by an enthusiastic personnel without mentioning anything about MLM. Driven by curiosity, I went for an "interview".
It was not really an "interview". It was an "opportunity meeting". I did not realize it was a MLM until the end of the presentation.
The only comment I could give is they are all fantastic presenters - like motivational speakers, they are magnetic, lively and energetic, all in one. They managed well in the sales pitch, washed away all the concerns. Anybody could have been swayed by them to some degree. If I were given a chance, I would have gave them Oscar awards that night. The result - I signed up as a distributor that night. The presentation did convince me. I had no prior experience in the involvement of business relationship other than employee / employer / coworker. However, since they had shown that people who started with nothing can succeed, I felt that I could do that too.
Let's called this is MLM A from now on.
I tried very hard to build the new business, followed every step my mentor told me to do. From distributing flyers into people's mailboxes or onto people's car windscreen, publishing classified ads in newspaper and internet, giving out free samples, organizing parties, making professional cold calls, conducting surveys in public area, attending meetings , trainings and so on and so forth.
All these cost MONEY and TIME.
All expenses were borne by me.
In order to receive commission payment on the downline's purchase, it is required to be at the level of purchasing $4000 worth of products. It was also being "pitched" in the trainings consistently that the only "serious" way to make quick money is to start at that level. They even "proved" it by asking all the people who did the purchase to stand up and proved that the products can be sold within a week or month.
This was the biggest mistake I made! I was not able to interpret compensation plan structure carefully against my situation. In fact, whatever the "proof" they showed during the training is not representative of the overall population. Not 100% of distributors attending the training, isn't it? If I had given it one more time, I wouldn't have bought it.
All I did was to listen to the mentors and company and follow their "success blueprint".
I managed to sign up a few distributors and sell some products. To make long story short:
My result: $0.
My real result was closer to negative $8000. This is because I had unsold products and spent thousands on marketing.
I knew something was wrong but I didn't know what.
In the middle of the despair, I was "secretly" approached by my sideline (in case you don't know, sideline is not in my organization and neither do I in his' or hers', and there is no money relationship between both of us.).
Let's called this MLM B.
What surprised me was I found there were quite a numbers of seasoned distributors including few TOP DISTRIBUTORS from MLM A had started with this MLM B for a while and had "resigned" from MLM A.
What's even more shocking is the TOP DISTRIBUTORS even felt it was very tough to maintain the level of income in MLM A. Some other distributors also felt the same way. (By the way, the "Oscar actors and actresses" have shown their true faces.)
Plus, the seasoned distributor explained the good points of the compensation plan between A and B. Due to the characteristics of this plan, there was no need for inventory loading like the one in MLM A.
At that point in time, I realized there are many types of compensation plans in the MLM industry. But I wasn't smart enough to spot that each plan has its own advantages and disadvantages.
In fact, if I would have known that at that time, I would be able to weigh the pros and cons and make a wiser decision on whether or not the plan was suitable for me.
I was very desperate to recover my investment, and since I knew them (this was my mistake also, friend's trust and business' trust is different), I decided to give it a shot. The story did not end here.
Initially, I was having some results. I even got "Top inviter of the month" consecutively for two months by my upline leaders. All the people I invited and the product solds were done through cold market prospecting. This was because I have learnt that friends and family members sometimes were not my target market.
Sounds like I am going on the right track and building a true business, right?
No. My result was negative $2000.
Instead of decreasing my debt, it increased my debt.
All my hard work, time, and money were "gone with the wind".
To sum it up, I was left with total of $10,000 in debt, and lost 2 years of my precious time. Bear in mind that time is not reversible; it remains true even if you are the richest man in world.
It was a struggle...
Was I not making enough effort? Need to double and triple on my investment in order to see some real money coming in?
I did not claim that I had worked my business every day, but I've invested whatever time I had and did my best to get this going. After all, don't many MLM's claim countless times that they have helped many average persons to achieve financial freedom starting from a part time basis?
My feeling was like inserting $10,000 amount into a jackpot machine and thinking: "may be just another $5,000 and another year of hard work will earn back my investment in multiple folds".
On the other hand, the MLM company and my mentors always told me "you can do it" as long as you stay committed and never quit.
I realized to continue in this business at this point in time, I have to become the "Oscar recipient" to attract and recruit a huge number of downlines. Without this, there was NO way I could even recover a single dime. "Like attracts like" that was what they said.
Basically, in a straightforward and easy term, it means "fake it till you make it".
I am not sure how you feel. At this juncture, I could not continue...
Even if I am capable of becoming that "Oscar recipient", how about my downlines?
I began to question the MLM business model. I switched from emotional thinking mode to logical thinking mode.
I began to research on the internet and offline to find out about the MLM industry, and the compensation plan. I was looking for some independent studies and unbiased view about this business.
Things started to unfold and the overall picture about MLM has emerged. Actually, some findings were quite shocking.

Lesson Learned...
As an employee, you are getting paid for making mistakes.
As an entrepreneur, you pay for the mistake.
Thus, if you are thinking about getting involved in MLM opportunity, acquiring the basic knowledge of the industry is the first prerequisite.
When we are in the position of employee, sometimes we make mistakes. Usually, we get scolded by superior. Feel the pinch, right?
Well, behind the scene, the business owner or the company is paying for our mistake (depend on whether it is big or small mistake). We still get our monthly paycheck. The company pays for our mistake.
When we are in the position of entrepreneur, (in this case, when you join the MLM, you are the entrepreneur) decision making is critical. One mistake sometimes can lead to bankruptcy. We cannot afford to make mistakes.
It would be risky to jump into the waters of business with both feet; without first testing the waters and understanding the basics.
MLM industry is a business, and each industry has its own tactics. If you fail to learn the basics, then you are bound to fail, and nothing can help you even if you have the best mentor.
I failed to learn the about the MLM business system and model. As a result, I was lacking the capability to make the best decision along the process.
This has come with extremely high tuition fees:

Study the compensation plan on how you can earn money and what it takes to run the business.
The product offered must have real value.
