The 6 important stages on the biodmedical road to recovery
It’s a difficult place to be when you are handed an Autism diagnosis and told that there is little you can do to improve your child’s future. You feel guilty and isolated but very determined not to leave any stone unturned to help your child.
But then, as you do your research, you discover that kids around the world are recovering to various degrees using Biomedical Therapy. So what is this Biomedical Therapy? What does it involve and how do you get started?
Biomedical therapy is using therapies and approaches that are considered complementary by mainstream medicine, although there is a movement of Doctors around the world now embracing this approach. Therapies such as special diets, vitamin and mineral supplementation, addressing gut microbiome imbalances, immune imbalances and detoxifying the body of heavy metals and other toxins.
Ignore the Naysayers and look at what’s possible. Naturally, people are sceptical about Biomedical Therapy, and will tell you not to waste your time, effort and money.
On the other hand there are many families out there who have experienced life changing results. These families are desperate to share their success and actually love to shout at the top of their lungs about Biomedical Therapy and what is possible.
There are pieces that are common to many children – as an example digestive issues are seen in 90% of children with Autism. Research also shows that kids with Autism have higher levels of heavy metals in their body than their neurotypical peers as well as inflammation and immune imbalances. Addressing digestive and immunity issues and starting the detoxification process really helps many kids.
You need to understand it’s not a quick fix and it will take effort, determination and persistence. Start now, don’t put it off until tomorrow.
Here are the 6 basic stages of biomedical therapy to get your child started on the road to recovery
The 6 basic steps are:
Reduce the toxic load your child is experiencing Heal the digestive system Increase body nutrient levels Support metabolism and biochemistry Remove heavy metals and toxins Optimise long term health
Step 1 – Reduce the toxic load your child is experiencing.
Reducing the toxic load is the very first step in recovering your child.
Toxins come in many forms and we are exposed to them every day as part of living. Our body is designed to remove toxins – detoxification processes form a vital role in keeping us healthy. Toxins come from:
Products we use every day such as plastics, cleaners, detergents, personal care products, etc Environmental toxins such as pollution, pesticides and many other chemicals
And, the biggest sources of toxins…
our food and our toxic gut.
So let me explain what I mean. Our modern day processed food is a nutritional disaster. As a society we expect our food to be super quick to prepare, to look perfect, to last forever and to tantalise our tastebuds with high levels of sugar, salt and savoury flavours.
But all this comes at a price, and that price is our health, longevity, well being and now, our children’s health.
Processed food is full of artificial additives (read chemicals) that the body sees as harmful. Our body handles them using its detoxification processes; they are not nutrients the body can use to grow and repair, or that can be used to make energy. These chemicals drive inflammation in the body and brain and also affect the balance of good bacteria in the gut.
Our gut bacteria are a living population that outnumber the cells in our body. They play a key role in the function of our body, producing nutrients and playing a role in the removal of chemicals from the body. Think about what we are feeding them – fresh clean food keeps them healthy, food laden with chemicals is likely to do harm resulting in death.
As the good guys die off, the bad guys move in and take over. Functions are lost. The gut becomes inflamed, the immune system is affected and toxic waste is generated that impacts brain function.
The Autistic brain is around 5% larger than ‘normal’ and research is suggesting that inflammation is responsible.
Food allergies and food sensitivities are a major contributor to a toxic, inflamed gut. I find a large number of kids have food sensitivities and removing the offending foods makes a massive difference to their focus, concentration, sleep and energy levels.
Autism diets also remove foods that have an opiate effect on the brain, so start by removing gluten, casein, soy and corn. You also need to remove artificial colourings, flavourings and preservatives.
In summary, the most important thing to do in step 1 is to reduce inflammation from a toxic inflamed gut. Start by cleaning up the diet. Remove artificial additives and start your child on an Autism diet.
OMG I have a changed Boy and its only been 1 week since we took gluten and dairy foods away 100%. He has become very calm, and a real pleasure to be around, I also noticed he has interacted better with others……Wow!!! its amazing!!

Step 2 – Heal the digestive system
As we talked about in step 1, the digestive system is the biggest source of toxins our kids are exposed to and stopping this flow into the body is one of the first things to do. As the diet is being improved, we can start addressing the gut and begin healing.
Kids on the spectrum typically suffer from digestive discomfort, sometime severely. Did you know that head banging can be a sign of digestive pain?
Some of the symptoms I see are:
constipation diarrhoea impacted faeces yellow, orange and pale stools bloating and distension of the abdomen stinky, stinky wind poor digestion of food and uptake of nutrients pain between the bottom of the rib cage and the navel – push gently in this area to see if your child is tender
There are 2 main terms to think about when we talk about gut healing:
leaky gut and gut dysbiosis
Leaky gut is when there are gaps in the lining of the gut. These gaps allow contents of the gut to pass through into the bloodstream that normally stay in the gut. Things like proteins and toxic waste products produced by bad bugs. This leads to all sorts of confusion and errors in the way our body functions as well as driving inflammation.
Gut dysbiosis is when the balance of the good and the bad bacteria is disrupted, The degree of gut dysbiosis varies considerably from mild to severe and can take a considerable amount of time to rectify.
Addressing these 2 two main factors begins with a healing diet. Removing processed foods and replacing them with nutritious healing foods that gut bacteria love is key. Changing the internal terrain combined with targeted anti-microbial herbs and supplements heals the gut and brings it back into balance.
“But my child is such a picky eater, he’ll never eat these kinds of foods” Yes, many kids on the spectrum are picky eaters and many families have been exactly where you are now. And yes, it will require time, effort, patience, love and determination, but it can be done. Don’t let it stop you from recovering your child.
You are an amazing lady and I value what you have given us more than you will ever know. Norm and I both agree that our newfound understanding of food and all that goes with it is something that has already changed our lives and will only bring quality into our lives further as we go. Thank you so much for giving us this Julie.

Step 3 – Increase body nutrient levels
Kids on the spectrum are usually low in many vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and other nutrients such as the anti-oxidant glutathione.
This is due to a number of factors:
picky eating a diet high in processed food poor absorption of nutrients decreased digestive function
Parents have a sense that picky eating and poor diets are a problem but our medical system doesn’t seem to place importance on this. Typically the attitude is “it won’t hurt, kids grow up ok”
I beg to differ on this approach, nutrition is so much more important than we have ever dreamed. I was quite shocked to read the research. A group of studies (1, 2, 3) has identified that children under 3 years of age who have a poor diet are:
90 percent more likely to have fair or poor health rather than good or excellent health 31 percent more likely to spend time in the hospital 76 percent more likely to have problems in cognitive, language, and behavioural development Vulnerable to long term effects such as poor achievement at school, emotional problems, poor health and obesity More at risk – parents were 66% more likely to identify their child as being developmentally at risk

Step 4 – Support metabolism and biochemistry
Our metabolism and biochemistry are processes in the body that keep it operating correctly. Any changes to these processes, big or small, can have drastic outcomes.
Research on the metabolism of kids with Autism is showing quite a few alterations, here’s a few:
changes in neurotransmitter levels changes in methylation – undermethylation and overmethylation changes in the processing of vitamins B9 and B12 pyrrole disorder disruption of the mineral balance in the body changes to digestive enzymes
Nutrient deficiencies play a major role in the alteration of these metabolic processes. Vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids and other nutrients like amino acids are cofactors in metabolic processes and are required in varying amounts. As an example, methionine is particularly needed for kids who are under methylated. Another example is incorrect function of some digestive enzymes which is helped by using a digestive enzyme containing DPPIV. Vitamin B6 is needed in many reactions and is frequently deficient in Autism.
Over time, supporting the metabolism with extra nutrients allows the body to return to normal.
A question I commonly get is – “Do I really need to give supplements to my child? Don’t we get everything we need from food?”
The answer to this is yes, we can get what we need from food, the correct food, grown in fertile soil with no pesticides. However, when the body is compromised, it needs to catch up and this means supplementing nutrition for a period of time. We need to provide a therapeutic dose of the nutrients, not just a maintenance dose. Most repair is done when the body has additional nutrients.

5. Remove heavy metals and toxins
Parents are concerned about toxic metal levels and research is confirming their existence and the connection with Autism severity. It’s important to note that heavy metals are not the cause of Autism, they are part of the Autism picture and impact children to varying degrees. Removing heavy metals and toxins is an essential step in Autism recovery.
Research is confirming that children with Autism have higher levels of toxic metals in their blood and urine than their neurotypical piers. (4) This study found a strong association with toxic metal levels and Autism severity.
A study in 2009 showed an astonishing connection between Autism and the environment. (5) The study aimed to find out if mercury pollution was related to Autism. The results showed that for every 10 miles from industrial or power plant sources, there is a decrease in Autism rates. Data confirmed that for every 1000 pounds of industrial release there was a corresponding 2.6% increase in autism rates and a 3.7% increase associated with power plant emissions.
An earlier study by the same scientists showed for each 1000 pounds of environmentally released mercury there was a 61% increase in Autism and a 43% increase in special needs education services. (6)
Lead is another toxic metal that I frequently come across in my clinic. Lead is classed as a neurotoxin and there is considerable research that shows the devastating affect lead has on cognitive development.
Other metals I typically see are aluminium, antimony, arsenic, boron and cadmium.
Removing heavy metals and environmental toxins needs to be done slowly and the body needs high levels of nutrition. As health is restored detoxification processes begin to work again and with help, metals and toxins are removed.

6. Optimise long term health whilst living with Autism
Autism is considered a lifelong condition by many health professionals and indeed there are varying levels of recovery. Optimising long term health is an important step that often goes unrecognised.
Optimising your child’s health is being aware and consistently applying what you’ve learned, even though they have recovered. Understand what your child responds to and what has helped them the most. Have a program that keeps them healthy, here are my suggestions:
Selected high quality supplements that keep levels of essential nutrients high, support their metabolism and biochemistry – a daily multivitamin, multi mineral, anti-oxidant, fish oil and probiotic Protect their gut microbiome – the good guys in the gut. Eat kefir or sauerkraut daily Minimise their toxic exposure – use non-toxic products around the home and for personal use. Eat a diet high in whole foods, no processed food Exercise, fresh air, sunlight and sleep
The next important step is to understand your child’s triggers so you can minimise the risk of symptom return. The 3 major triggers to watch for are:
Too many slip ups in the diet. Some children can cope with relaxing their diet to some degree, some kids can’t. Stress can be a major trigger for many kids. Events like starting a new school, moving house, family disruption. Acute illness like diarrhoea. Diarrhoea can disrupt the gut microbiome, significantly impact symptoms and undo some of the work that has been done.
And the last really important thing to do is pass your knowledge onto your child. Help them understand what they need, how to tell if things aren’t quite right and what to do before problems become significant. Teach your child how to maintain their health through their teens and into their adult life.
I hope all this information has helped you understand what can be done to help children using natural biomedical therapy. The references for the studies I’ve talked about are at the bottom of the page.
