Coach Grewe has exemplified great class and professionalism towards me and my teammates at LSU. Through his dedication and work ethic he has helped LSU to become the best we can be. From day one of my recruiting with Coach Grewe he really cared for me and showed that he has all the confidence in the world in his players. From the recruiting aspect he is unbelievable at getting players from all around the country and not only bringing them to school, but also instilling within them the program they are representing. I now cover special assignments and mostly pro coverage, but I have scouted the entire country and I enjoyed scouting the Tigers in 2009. I saw them a dozen or so times, including watching the games on ESPN from Omaha. They were loaded with talent and almost all their position players were starters the previous year. But their pitching staff was different. The entire starting rotation was new and they had a new closer. I knew about Coleman, and I expected him to be the closer. I had him in as a 8-10 round senior sign, so the Royals did good. Going into the year, Coleman was all I knew about on their pitching staff. Offensively they had different guys show up at different times to carry the load, and they all put up numbers. And our front office likes to see the numbers. Coach Grewe’s pitchers were consistent and it showed in their efforts. They pitched with an enormous amount of confidence and always seemed to be “in-that-zone”. It was paralleled by only one other team: Texas. So it was fitting they played each other in Omaha. I have scouted many of Skip Johnson’s team, and they always are prepared and pitch with confidence. I really like Skip and know him well, so I expected that. This LSU team had a new identity with Coach Grewe. They pitched off their fastball, where before, they were more of a junk ball staff. This was totally opposite of the years prior. It was very clear how much of a difference he made in that team winning that National Championship. They struck out a bunch with that fastball. When Coach Grewe asked me for my input on that 2009 team and asked me to write this, the LSU tigers had yet to win a game in Omaha since the last time Coach Grewe was with them in 2009. So that proves to me, he made a huge difference. That will end soon, as LSU is a power school in a power conference. But I enjoyed watching the Tigers take on the Longhorns in 2009. That was some really good baseball. I would love to watch the two programs match up again.
