Many parents view Independent Schools as something they could not possibly aspire to, as only the very rich can afford to choose a private education for their children. This is a myth! The competition for places at good state schools is intense and thousands of parents do everything in their power to increase the chances of their child being admitted to an outstanding state school. Every year parents move house to be in the catchement area of a good school, but thousands of families end up having to appeal to their Local Education Authority to get their child into their first choice school, with many failing to succeed. I have been through this process with one of my children and although I was successful in my appeal, the process was arduous and I remain convinced that I was only successful because I really knew how the system worked due to my experience as a teacher.

Simon Bowler has been involved in music education for the last 25 years. He has held Director of Music positions at Independent boarding and day schools in the UK and abroad. He has advised parents and students on music scholarships and awards for prep school, senior school and university or music college entry. He has also been responsible for awarding scholarships and has acted as an independent advisor at scholarship auditions. Most UK Independent Schools offer Music Scholarships awarded through a competetive audition process. Some scholarships are difficult to access, but every year some scholarships are not awarded due to a lack of applicants.
