You might call these the “lost interviews”. Nobody else ever knew they took place. But they’re not just any old interviews. In 1987, over two sessions totalling 3 ½ hours, I sat down with Van in his London home and recorded his thoughts on – well, just read on...! We talked about so many things...
You’ve never read this before, but now you can!
This is Van, mid-career, 26 years ago, talking for 3 ½ hours (58 pages), in-depth as nowhere else in print. One day in 1985, my ‘phone rang and it was someone who’d just read my book of the year before, ‘The Secret Power of Music’.
We talked about music, this caller and I, and about my book, for about half an hour, and we were just saying good-bye when I realised I hadn’t even a clue who it was, or how he’d got my number. So I asked, ‘By the way, who am I talking to?’ ‘Van Morrison’, came the reply.
So then we talked a bit more, and in the end I arranged to go meet him at his Holland Park, London, home of the time to chat even some more. Then a year or two after that, as it happened, I moved to London, and we met quite a bit in the mid to late-80s for this and that reason. In the end I suggested a long, maybe even book-length, interview.
We did two long sessions which I recorded. I feel these shouldn’t stay locked away “in the vaults” any longer. Because really, they’re deeply insightful to anybody interested in Van and his music! So here are the sessions now for posterity, so that all real Van fans can read them at last.
