What you need to know about hip replacement surgery
Are you getting ready for a hip replacement?
In my video series you will discover...
How to recover from your surgery as quickly as possible A full set of powerful exercises for both before & after your surgery What to do before & after surgery, with valuable tips from a senior personal trainer to make your recovery a breeze
"Ronâs workout is a gift you give yourself." — Paula Haarvei, age 67
So, you need a hip replacement and you're not sure what to do.
Are you willing to leave the entire procedure in the hands of your family physician, who may not be the most up-to-date professional regarding this operation?
Often times, your doctor will refer you to a colleague, an orthopaedic surgeon who does some hip replacements.
That's not good enough.
Remember the old expression: "Fifty percent of all doctors graduate in the bottom half of their class." Are you prepared to let just anyone put just anything into your body, which will then become a part of you?
Wait... 6 to 12 weeks of post-surgery rehab?
If you're a sedentary individual who is experiencing hip discomfort and has ample health insurance, then maybe you just donât care, as long as the pain goes away.
But, if you take any pride in the health of your body and becoming the active individual that you once were, then I know you want to be as well-informed as you can about hip replacement surgery.
Most doctors will advise that you take anywhere from a 6 to 12 week rehabilitation process after your hip replacement surgery. For most of us, that waiting period is simply too long.
That's why I've developed a series of fitness exercises specifically for active, young-at-heart seniors like you and me, so that we can be strong before, during, and after our hip replacement surgery, and back on our feet in no time.
Who The Heck Am I?
My name is Ron Krayewski and I've been physically training clients with weights as well as the martial arts, since 1969. I obtained a degree in physical education in 1971. After a few decades as a martial arts instructor, I became a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist in 1995.
My focus is now completely on training Baby Boomers and seniors just like you, which has become my specialty. I'm now 66, and have been training for over five decades.
And I just got a hip replacement!
How You, Too, Can Have a Speedy Recovery from Hip Replacement Surgery
I've made a complete video guide to hip replacement surgery that, if followed, will ensure your muscles are strong enough going into the surgery, and will make your rehabilitation process smooth, gentle, and effective.
The advice contained in these videos is priceless for anyone who is about to undergo, or who has already undergone hip replacement surgery, and is backed by my 60 day warranty ([see below]).
Video 1: Before Your Surgery
Prehabilitation for hip replacement surgery
It's not like you've ever had hip replacement surgery before, right?
You're probably overwhelmed by the prospect of preparing for it. How do you find the right doctor for you? What questions should you be asking?
Let me be your guide.
In this video, I explain the questions that you need to ask and have answered before your coming surgery.
Next, I will show you the 15 exercises you can do before your hip replacement surgery to strengthen and prepare your joint. Get your leg/hip connection in shape prior to surgery, while you still have the strength.
This video is chock full of great advice that you will be glad to know before your surgery, not only to set your mind at ease, but also to ensure the entire process goes far more smoothly.
What will the surgery be like? In this video, I've got bits and pieces of my actual hip replacement surgery, taken by a member of my surgical team.
Though graphic, knowing exactly what the surgeons will be doing to your body is one of the best preparation steps you can take ahead of your surgery. Burying your head in the sand will get you nowhere.
Video 2: After Your Surgery
Rehabilitation and Avoiding Common Misconceptions
So, youâve had your surgery. Now what?
In this video, I will show you how to do things with an artificial hip without dislocating it. The doctor gave me a few things that I should avoid. Doctors are not physiotherapists, and physiotherapists are not experienced trainers.
Discover an important technique for sitting in a comfortable chair without a cushion, without damaging your new hip. Learn how to get in and out of bed or a car seat without pain or injury (I did it the wrong way and popped an important staple). Understand how to achieve a comfortable nightâs sleep, even with frequent urinating. I can sleep well on all sides, with no problem. With my instructions, you will be able to bend over to retrieve an object from the floor without causing a dislocation the way a regular bend at the waist will do. Learn to obey the 90 degree rule to keep your new hip intact. Avoid going beyond 45 degrees in another direction that could cause injury. I will NOT show you how you can trim the toe nails of your injured leg (impossible), without causing further damage (free tip: get a pedicure). Understand the importance of taking your operating surgeonâs advice for the first two weeks, and laying low to let your muscles and connective tissue recover. Listen to your physiotherapist for some rehabilitation exercises and stretches you probably didnât know about. Learn why I chose fitness machines at a commercial gym to condition my injured hip rather than trying to perform the prehabilitation exercises.
Many, if not most of my prehab exercises are not appropriate for the hip replacement surgery rehabilitation process, so all post-surgery exercises will be different and more gentle for the first few weeks.
