"I BELIEVE IN ME"
My name is Margarita Mendoza and on September 21, 2012, I
received a message from Facebook saying, "Hi Maggie, thanks for the
add. Hope you're having a great Friday". I had no idea that this
friend request and those simple words would have such a tremendous
impact in my life, especially at that particular time in my life.
You see, I have been married for 23 years to a man who is very
controlling and for most of these years, I felt that I had completely
lost myself because I wasn't able to recognize that he was controlling
my every thought or actions that I made. He even had me convinced that
the choices that I was making were mine, but in reality, they were his
too. When I realized this, I kept thinking I was a failure, inadequate
and not worthy of making him or anyone happy.
When I received this message, I was at a crossroads because
my husband had asked me for a divorce 26 days prior. I had been stuck
and in denial of trying to make sense of what was actually happening
to me and I was trying to keep something together that I knew had
already been
dissolved. My struggles and tribulations throughout these two and
half months seemed to have been a heavy journey filled with lifelong
tough experiences and challenges.
As I got to know my friend and mentor, Joseph Mendoza a little
better, I began to slowly see things for what they really were. I
remember telling Joseph that I felt like I really needed to read his
books because I needed more positive things in my life. So I ordered
his books, read his inspiring poems and they really gave me the
clarity and focus that I was looking for.
Soon after, my mind didn't seem to be as cloudy and I wasn't feeling
like I was in such disarray. I even saw that perhaps divorce was a
much more healthy option for everyone since my husband and I were
miserable around each other most of the time.
With the exceptional guidance and support of my dear friend Joseph, I
was able to learn how to be grateful for the things I have in life and
not to focus on the things that I don't have or the things that I
might lose. He also taught me not to respond impulsively or to think
negatively about the things that happen in my life or what people say
about me. He told me that the thoughts that I choose to think create
my life each and every day, moment by moment. "I could actually choose
to be in control!"
Some other important factors he emphasized and made a lot of sense to
me and that are in his writings are; to seek to livein peace, have a
positive outlook, and to live a simple life by taking control of your
thoughts regardless of the situation. His daily inspirational words,
guidance and videos; have helped me to think and see things
differently.
As we kept exchanging more thoughts about life through texts and over
the phone, a light bulb went on in my head and I started analyzing my
relationship and taking ownership of how I had allowed my husband
to manipulate me in order to suit his needs. I took full
responsibility for my
actions and it felt much better to take ownership because I finally
understood that he didn't have that much power over me after all. I
felt freed, like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. "I now
believe in the power of me!"
I truly believe that it was a blessing from God that I had the honor
and privilege to have met my friend/ mentor, Joseph Mendoza, at such a
critical point in my life. With his mentoring, guidance and his
empowerment books I truly believe that I have been empowered to become
a stronger and more independent woman who can be proud to say that I
am a Latina
woman, former migrant worker, a career woman and a great mom of three
wonderful boys.
Words alone cannot begin to express my gratitude for how much Joseph
Mendoza has helped me.
