I used every minute of the day to focus on what was wrong with my life and with me. This left no time to actually work on finding a solution to my problems. I fell into a deep depression and could hardly get out of bed in the morning. I really couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. But there was!
The Secret Was A Huge Flop!
I forget the exact day I decided to watch the Oprah Show. I remember how fuzzy the screen was. I couldn’t afford cable and was relying on a pair of old rabbit ears to tune in. But it was what I heard, more than what I saw, that changed my life!
Oprah was interviewing the cast of The Secret. Up until this point I’d never heard of it. A friend loaned me a copy of The Secret on DVD. I think I watched it five time! I was hooked!
For the first time in quite awhile I felt a spark of hope start to burn inside of me. I worked hard to put into practice what it preached.
My initial excitement with The Secret soon faded when I discovered that a few affirmations and positive thoughts weren’t going to bring me more money or peace of mind. Ah, if life were that simple!
This is when I decided to take a closer look at some of those New Thought authors that were responsible for Rhonda Byrne’s inspiration. I tracked down every dusty, old book I could find and spent weeks in my apartment devouring the concepts presented by these authors.
The Door to Abundance Flung Itself Wide Open!
I discovered that my focus on “wanting” or “getting” something, really meant that I was focusing on my “lack” of something. This is why I continued to attract negative things into my life. It took me a while to really understand how profound this is!
New Thought authors teach us that concentrating on positive thoughts and truly believing in your own self-worth are fundamental to the Law of Attraction.
I got to work on improving my “inner world” instead of focusing on my broken outer world. Things began to happen. (I’m not here to tell you everything will suddenly be perfect in a few days.)
A friend set me up on a date that I almost turned down. After all, why would anyone want to date an unemployed smuck like me. I dragged myself out of my apartment and the Universe took care of the rest. The love of my life would latter tell me that she fell in “love with my heart.” She wasn’t focused on what I didn’t have.
We moved into a nice house in the suburbs. I continued to read the works of those New Thought authors and I continued to pound the pavement looking for work. One day I bumped into an old acquaintance I hadn’t seen in about 15 years. We did some catching up and it turned out that he had moved into a house one street over from me.
The Universe and a Friend of a Friend of A Friend
We arranged to have a barbeque that was attended by his neighbour across the street. As it turned out, this neighbour and I had a shared interest in the work of a very important charity. That week he invited me to attend it’s fundraiser.
