The facts are if you have any type of knee pain, running more will
not only aggravates it, but it can also increase the swelling, scar
tissue, and cause various muscle imbalances. Sometimes taking a week
off is a great idea, but to come back only to do the same exact thing
in the first place, without a strategy in place will only set you back
more than a week.

And of course my favorite, the knee brace from drug store. A smart
man once said, "The best brace you will never have are your own
muscles. Putting on a knee brace for support while you run, is like
putting a band-aid on after surgery. On top of that, most people wear
the brace all day (at work, on their commute, etc.)

My most recent victory was my client (name changed for privacy),
let's call him Emmanuel.

Emmanuel had an on-going ankle problem that caused his gait to change
while running to help avoid pain. But Emmanuel also found out that his
ankle was the least of his worries; for now he had severe knee and hip
pain on the opposite side.

Emmanuel was put through the progression of exercise and advised to
take 2 weeks off from running to help re-align and correct any muscle
imbalances. After following the program in 6 weeks, Emmanuel reported
that when he attempted running his "long run" to prepare for the
marathon he felt "lighter". Also, that his ankle or knee did not
bother him as much as it once did. He did express that his hip pain
had decreased significantly.

Once we analyzed Emmanuel's gait it reflected a drastic change in
stride length and frequency.

BUT I DIGRESS LET'S TALK ABOUT YOU!

As a physical therapist, I have seen you (well, not exactly you) come
into the clinic time and time again. The questions are the same (body
type, age, weight might be different) but the answers usually boil
down to the same things.

Studies have shown a 40% decrease in symptoms, less stride-by-stride
variability and more strength to help them run safely, by completing 2
simple hip strengthening exercises (as presented in the March/April
edition of the journal of Athletic Training). Research also shows that
50% of runners experience a running injury each year and half of those
injuries are to the knee.

What I wrote down in this book covers all the basics that every
runner should know about their body; from nutrition to the types of
equipment to use to supplement your training. It was written out for
