We teach brilliant writers to become brilliant book marketers

It’s not easy being a writer these days.

Rockstar authors like Stephen King and James Patterson get massive paychecks. Celebrities like Snooki and Paris Hilton get book deals in their sleep. Meanwhile, mind-blowingly talented unknowns suffer years of rejection, finally landing pitifully small advances…if they’re lucky.

At the same time, publishers spend less and less marketing new authors, and fantastic books end up in bargain bins and go out of print before they ever get a proper chance.

We keep going because writing is what we have to do – but also because we all want a shot at the rewards of publication – fame, a paycheck, or even just the occasional letter from a happy reader.

Traditional Publishing vs. ePublishing

Rejection letters. Insultingly small advances for books that consumed months or even years of our lives. Unsupportive editors and marketing teams. Content changes we don’t agree with. Traditional publishing is not without its difficulties.

Still, many of us keep heading in that direction because “that’s how it’s always been done”, or because of the public perception that “books from real publishers are better”.

Today, though, more and more writers are realizing there’s a better option through self-publishing – and e-publishing in particular. At little to no cost, you can get your book out in some of the world’s biggest marketplaces – Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords, and more. No rejection letters, no waiting, and you get to keep the bulk of the money your book generates (anywhere from 30-70%, in most cases).

But there’s a catch…

Of course there’s a catch. There’s always a catch. In this case, it’s part technical, part marketing.

We writers are smart, creative folks – but put your typical writer in front of a computer and ask him to market his book…and…well…describing him as overwhelmed will probably be an understatement. If you want to sell books, though, you HAVE to know a little something about how to promote them.

That’s where Be the Publisher comes in. Be the Publisher breaks online marketing down into its simplest elements through written lessons, screenshots, videos, and a collaborative forum for Q&A.

The site was founded by two long-term, successful marketers who both have a huge love for reading, writing, and creativity.

David Ford – David is the owner of PPVPlaybook.com, where he’s been teaching online marketing tactics to affiliate marketers since late 2009. He’s also a successful affiliate in his own right, generating millions of dollars in sales and leads for businesses that pay him commissions.

Successfully self-employed for 8 years now, David has created the kind of lifestyle that gives him both freedom and security – and he loves helping others reach similar goals. He’s also an avid reader and frequent writer, having written several of his own ebooks.

Stefanie Hutson - Stefanie studied economics and writing at University of Chicago and Washington University in St. Louis, but a love of technology prompted her to pursue a career in online marketing. She’s been an eBay PowerSeller, a Marketing Director for Vat19.com, and more recently, a self-employed affiliate marketer and marketing consultant generating millions of dollars in sales annually. She has also ghostwritten more than a dozen non-fiction books and ebooks (but has a secret love affair with fiction writing, too).

Questions and answers

So how does Be the Publisher work, exactly?

It’s pretty simple. We have a message board with tons of useful tutorials and discussions about writing and marketing. If you’re the quiet type, you’re quite welcome to sit back and just soak up the knowledge. On the other hand, we strongly encourage you to interact with other members and ask as many questions as your little heart desires.

We also make a point of releasing frequent "in-depth" lessons on the forums - things that go above and beyond the level of casual discussion and offer thorough explanations through video and screenshots.

As a member, you'll also get free access to Be the Publisher's online seminars (webinars) with successful marketers and authors.  We'll make sure to notify you by email each time there's an event coming up, so you won't have to worry about something passing you by.

What does it cost?

Membership is $19.99/month. You will be billed $19.95 the first month, and evey 30 days from then on. You can cancel anytime. If you’re a starving artist, this may not be for you. On the other hand, if you’re ready to start treating your writing like the business that it is, this is a pretty minor investment.

Of course, this isn’t nearly as important as the content…

Be the Publisher is designed to help fill in the gaps to help great writers become great marketers. Although we don’t discourage writing critiques and discussion of technique, the main focus is on getting your work in front of as many potential customers as possible. Rather than offering generic, often outdated advice, we target everything specifically to authors. Some of the things you’ll get…

- The technical details of getting listed

- How to structure your listings to get more free exposure

- Keywords: what they are, how to know which ones are best for your book, and how to use them

- Non-fiction vs. fiction: promotional methods that work for each

- Case studies: real examples to illustrate different marketing techniques

- How to sell short articles and stories on the Kindle (and when it can be a better choice than publishing longer books)

- What to do once you’re on Twitter, Facebook, etc. (you probably already know you SHOULD be there, but not everyone knows what to do when they get there)

- Additional income streams that build on your writing talents

- Excruciatingly detailed tutorials for those who aren’t very computer savvy

- Troubleshooting: what to do when your book’s not selling

Most importantly, we maintain a supportive community atmosphere in the forum and we welcome everyone to ask questions and share their own experiences.

The best way to be successful in any endeavor is to treat your work like a business and focus as much time as possible on doing what you do best. As a self-published author, learning about marketing is a necessary evil – but Be the Publisher is here to offer support and cut your learning curve as much as possible.

Upon signing up, you'll have instant access to the forum and lessons. We’re confident that members who take action will have no trouble earning back their monthly Be the Publisher subscription price in the form of increased sales. However, if you join and decide it’s not for you, you have 7 days after your initial purchase to get a full refund.
