What Is The Importance Of Clinical Research?

Clinical trials are medical research trials that are performed on humans under double blind conditions. This means that the researchers and the patients do not know who is receiving the trial product or the placebo. You can be assured of the safety of every product you put in your mouth, on your skin or activities when you know that it has been proven by clinical trials.

These are the results of clinical trials that provided me with vital clues when putting this unique program together to heal chronic back pain.

Alexander Technique

In 2008, the British Medical Journal published the results of a clinical trial about the efficacy of using Alexander technique lessons combined with exercise and massage for chronic and recurrent back pain.  The results were extraordinary when compared with other methods of successfully treating chronic back pain.  Out of exercise, massage and Alexander Technique Lessons, only

“Lessons in the Alexander technique still had a beneficial effect on pain and functioning after 12 months”

“The effect of 24 lessons in the Alexander technique was …. an 86% reduction in days in pain compared with the control group”

The Alexander technique is not a magic bullet – it is a technique that you need to learn.  And … it’s not about having surgery, or taking drugs … it is about being proactive in your quest to be pain free … and it involves fixing yourself and learning how to keep looking after yourself permanently.

Education

It has been found that education is crucial for long term relief of back pain.

In fact, one study showed that an educational booklet actually decreased the number of visits to a general practitioner for back pain.  At least for adults, research has found that the most promising approaches to relieving back pain seem to involve physical activity/exercise and appropriate (biopsychosocial) education.

However, no single intervention is likely to be effective to prevent the overall problem for lower back pain, owing to its multidimensional nature.

I wholeheartedly agree with these findings.  I found that it was a combination of interventions used in a unique way (which I had to discover for myself) that relieved my back pain permanently.


Protruded Disc Tissue

Protruded disc tissue or a herniated disc is excruciating … and anyone who has experienced it will attest to this.  In the past, once you had a herniated disc the popular diagnosis was that you were stuck with it for life – and that you would need surgery.  However, this clinical trial proves otherwise.

“The rationale for non-operative treatment of diskal herniation has been supported by clinical and autopsy studies which demonstrate that absorption of protruded and extruded disk material can occur over time.”

Causes of Back Pain

It is now estimated that 85% of back pain is caused by muscular causes. Even sciatica, which was thought to be caused primarily by bulging discs on the sciatic nerve is often caused by the nerve being squashed by muscles such as in piriformis syndrome.

In fact … muscles are the reason that your back often “slips out” again after a chiropractic adjustment … the underlying muscular dysfunctions and imbalances that caused the spine to be pulled back out of alignment in the first place are not being treated.

Now … I’m not saying that chiropractic work is not valuable when you have a painful back … I would go so far as to say it saved my sanity … BUT … you do need to address the muscular problems as well – and that’s what I’ve done in this book.

How Am I Qualified?

I have a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechatronic) with honours.  Mechatronic is a combination of mechanical and electrical engineering.

I Feel More Comfortable Overall Despite Having Polymyalgia (many painful muscles)

And I feel more comfortable overall despite having polymyalgia.
