From: Kerri,
Dear Friend,
As a parent with two young children, life can be difficult at times. But when you add to that the confusion that surrounds an ASD Diagnosis, all of a sudden, your whole world seems to somehow tilt, and life is never the same.
Sometimes it can be so dark and extremely trying that you end up wanting to pull your own hair out because of frustration and a multitude of other very crazy and mixed up emotions.
Having been through all of this myself, and living on the outskirts of a bustling rural city, 3 hours away from the state capital, having no family or friends, we realized how alone we really were trying to fight this up-hill battle on our own …
As time went by (lots of time, that is), we managed to work our way through the “system” in our local area – it was challenging, frustrating, non-productive a lot of the time, and a very expensive process to go through – and did I mention frustrating?? Oh yes, of course I did.
But because I have a good eye for detail and have learned to take good notes for all the wrong sorts of reasons, I captured our journey and documented all the good ASD resources in the Wide Bay & Fraser Coast Region that made our journey easier, made sense to us, and were accessible.
As time when on, and after I completed my university studies, I began to work with clients as an ASD Behaviour Management Specialist and Independent Liaison Officer, and during these Personal Consulting sessions I found that a lot of the time I was writing a lot of the same notes of recommendation on scrap bits of paper for the parents to take home to follow up with, as they really were at a loss as to what to do and where to go to next.
So from this point I began to compile a list of resource referrals that I personally have used, as well as those that have come highly recommended to me from people that I value and trust.
Essentially this book was written so that it would help parents navigate the labyrinth of medical, educational and government systems geared toward ASD diagnoses in our local area – helping to take away a lot of the stress and feelings of bewilderment.
But the book also provides some really great ideas, tips and hints to help parents get their minds around some of the simple things they can do to help their child, and their family life, flow more smoothly as they wade their way through the processes supposed to be designed to help them, but more often than not, just end up confusing them.
This book will help ease a lot of that pain.
And as an added bonus, because of the natural ebb and flow of life, this list will constantly be evolving over time, and so I will be keeping this book alive by sending out FREE updates from time to time to those people who purchase their own copy – there will be announcements and more details about this in my newsletters when the time comes.
