Tips, Tools and Techniques for the Work-at-Home Parent

"Where Does the Time Go?"

Working at home — whether you manage a business from home, freelance or telecommute — can offer a great amount of freedom. The problem is that if you don’t manage your time well, you lose that freedom.

You also lose productivity.

You end up feeling like you have a regular job only a job that's unpaid for overtime that creeps into your personal and family time. Before you know it, you’re a slave to your work.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau (2005), 1 million of the 11 million people who work at home, put in 11 hours a day.  No, that’s not counting lunch!

Learning time management skills isn’t easy for most.

When you’re already strapped for time, finding room for time management courses and books seems impossible.

Still, you are here. Perhaps you are heeding a voice inside urging you to learn some time management skills. If you’re like many, you probably ask yourself the proverbial question of the work at home parent:

“Where does the time go?”

Work at home professionals, from artists and writers to accountants and small business owners, ask themselves this question day after day.
I talk to lots of Mums from school, many of whom work from home.  I so often here: “I need to organize myself better” or “I just didn’t have the time” or “I just don’t know where the time went"!

The irony for many is that they chose to work at home so that they’d have more time.

Most people work at home so they can have more time for their families, husbands and wives, for their children, more time for themselves, more time to grow professionally, to build their businesses…more time to take a breath once in a while and remember what life is all about.

Working at home brings many distractions, more so than the usual emails and office chatter. There’s the house upkeep, the children, and then there’s the television, neighbors wanting to chat, errands to run for others who aren’t so flexible and so on. It’s enough to drive the most capable multitasker batty.

Maybe you are wondering if working at home was the wisest decision?

Or perhaps you have a regular job but are trying to build a business at home in your “spare time,”and yet are hard-pressed to find that time.

I know how you feel.

I am a work at home professional and parent of a 9 and 10-year old. Not all that long ago, I had a regular job. You may have read my story already on my website, but for those who haven’t, I will summarize briefly. I had a 9 to 5 job I loved.  For 5 years, I started work at the office at 9 a.m. Monday to Friday and was home by 6 p.m.

With this work schedule, the housework, grocery shopping, the children’s homework and everything else had to be completed before work or after. That’s just the way it was. No waffling over whether to clean house or write a report for work. The lines were drawn for me, and I was efficient and organized.

Last June I was laid off. No more job. No more schedule. I had a part time home business and knew that I now needed to focus on this and grow into a full time occupation.  Yet I had no idea how to organize my time so that I could continue to be a good mum, grow my business and achieve personal goals.

I learned. Not all that quickly because the first thing I learned was that there’s a myriad of information on time management out there.

You can get seriously lost in the woods!

I persevered and made my way through the jungle of courses, books and sites. I learned how to get organized, to maximize my time and to set my own goals and achieve them.  I’m about to share with you what I learned.

Because I know you’re busy, that time is of the essence, I will cut to the chase.  I am sharing what I learned in an ebook, quick and easy to download, that teaches all you need to know about time management, as well as setting and achieving goals.
