I'M SURE YOU CAN RELATE
I don't know about you, but I didn't grow up lean, eating anything I wanted. Were you the same way? I used to wear a t-shirt to the beach to "hide" my rolls! How embarrassing!
And I fought that weight my entire life.
I started playing football the summer before going into 5th grade. But here's the problem...
...I NEVER made the weight limits to actually play with my own grade. When you're too "husky" (READ: fat), they make you play with a grade above you, so you don't hurt the "less husky" (READ: lean) kids.
I would have given anything to play with the kids in my own grade, though. But I didn't. Year after year after year. Imagine all your friends in your grade playing on the team, yet you have to play with the older group - who all know why you're there - you're too fat.
They never let you live that down!
And then I became an 8th grader. The weight limit was 135 lbs. And I was 20 lbs above that. I didn't have an option to play with the kids in the grade above me - they were in high school.
Instead, I had two options:
Lose 20 lbs to just barely make the weight limit Don't play
I was determined.
My coaches used to make all the "fatties" (as we were so affectionately referred to), do extra laps or other drills.
I didn't know much about nutrition at the time, but I knew I had to eat less. So I did. And we would weigh in, in front of all our coaches, each week.
Talk about a horrible experience for an overweight middle schooler, who already had a low self esteem.
Their "positive" reinforcement was "you're eating too much, eat less and you won't be so fat"...
...and forget about it if you didn't lose weight. Talk about getting embarrassed!
Fast forward a couple months later...
I was driving with my dad for the final "official" weigh in:
It was judgment day.
You either made it or you didn't.
I hadn't eaten ALL day. I literally starved myself to make sure there was no doubt that I made the cuts.
I was getting closer to the front of the line. I had butterflies in my stomach...
Finally, it was my turn.
I stepped on that balance scale, in front of all the coaches and the "judges."
137...136...135...
134.7!!!!!
I DID IT. I had achieved my goal.
Now I had to maintain that throughout the season (and beyond for my own good)
Fast forward several years
I became so excited about how losing fat changed me, I became laser focused on helping other people, like you, do the same...

MY EMBARASSING STORY
It's October 31st, 2008...Halloween. And I learned I was going to be a dad! My wife, Kara, was pregnant.
This was our first child, so we were both ecstatic. And I couldn't be any more proud of our daughter!
But along with all the excitement...came a pretty embarrassing side effect.
Kara had those normal first trimester cravings. But she was still safely gaining weight...both her and the baby were healthy as can be, at every check-up we had.
...but here's the problem.
No one was measuring MY weight gain!
Month after month went by. And slowly, but surely, that dreaded belly fat was coming back with a vengeance.
SINCE we were heading into winter, my clothes easily hid my belly fat.
And the excuses were there to match my weight gain.
"I want to be supportive for Kara..."
"Just ONE is no big deal..."
And "I'm still eating great foods..."
I mean, I'm going to be honest with you. I wasn't suddenly finding myself in the drive thru of every fast food restaurant in Louisville...
...but I let my guard down. My portions increased. Those "pregnancy cravings" suddenly became my own...and the weight came on slowly, but surely. You know it's bad when the woman at the Ice Cream store asks if your wife is "having the usual" - we made a few too many stops there!
Heck, I even cut down on workout time!! Kara was understandably tired through a lot of her pregnancy.
And I felt sucked right into it - on one hand I'm trying to be Mr. Supportive and help her with everything she needed. On the other hand, I was hurting myself by doing so. And it was no one's fault but my own.
This picture tells the exact story...less than one year earlier I had finished the Ironman and now I'm 20 lbs heavier than the day of the race!
