I'm sure many of you will know just what I'm talking about, my
condition followed what I now know to be a well beaten path amongst
chronic urticaria sufferers. As the years rolled on my condition got
slightly worse and more frequent by the year until the day came when

Day in day out I kept on taking whatever my doctor told me to, what a
dismal future I had to look forward to, and begrudgingly, I did learn
to live with it, just like they said I would have to, what choice is
there?. Days turn to weeks, weeks to months and months to years and
the daily drudgery of medication, avoidance of anything which I knew
to be a trigger and a plain food diet (mostly chicken and brown rice),
became routine and eventually normality, well that’s how it was for
me anyway.
Until at the age of 35 everything changed, my body’s own defence
system turned on me like never before, and all due certain brand of
perfume. ( I wont mention any names) I had a reaction to what ever was
in the perfume which brought on my worst attack of urticaria to date,
my whole body swelled with the ever increasing wheals and welts, THE
SWELLING GREW SO BAD THAT I LOOKED DISFIGURED, MY EYES WERE SWOLLEN SO
BAD THAT I COULDN'T SEE AND WHEN I COULD SEE, I COULDN'T RECOGNISE
MYSELF.
With the lumps expanding all over my face and over my scalp my head
grew to one and a half its normal size, the only way I can describe
how I LOOKED IS SOMETHING LIKE THE 'ELEPHANT MAN', you may have
experienced similar incidents, this particular attack happened just
two weeks before my brothers wedding and lasted almost up to the day
itself.
After that attack my urticaria became much worse, with attacks
becoming ever more frequent and severe at this point I had the effects
of urticaria almost every day, not always severe but almost always
there especially on my forehead, and behind my ears, the medication
the doctor prescribed had very little effect, nothing seemed to help,
and as you can imagine these were desperate times for me.

But still I carried on taking my daily medication as I thought that
without them my symptoms would be much worse, and then the unthinkable
started, my hair started thinning and falling out, every morning there
would be more and more hair left on the pillow, losing my hair was the
last straw as far as I was concerned.
I WILL ADMIT TO BEING A LITTLE VAIN, SO THE REALITY OF ME STARTING TO

than done perhaps). So I did what I’m sure lots of you have done, I
tried some of the many miracle supplements, the gels & creams, I tried
adjusting my diet even more than usual, I even stopped drinking
alcohol, “not that I’m a big drinker mind you”.
Through all my searching and testing, I can honestly say that the
only thing I found at this point, that had any effect on my urticaria
was unfortunately changing my diet beyond recognition, however eating
nothing but brown rice, pulses and fruit every day was not an
enjoyable experience for me.
While searching for an answer to my skin condition I joined a few
related internet forums, I guess they're a bit like chat rooms,
although to be honest I rarely ever posted anything, I just found a
little bit of comfort in knowing that I wasn't alone.
I WOULDN'T HAVE WISHED MY CONDITION ON MY WORST ENEMY, but it was
still comforting to know that others suffered with the same condition
as me, perhaps I wasn't that strange after all. Religiously I read the
new posts and the replies, most of which I was aware, until I came
across a thread (ongoing discussion) regarding a condition which the
discussion had decided was one of the main underlying reasons for
urticaria. I found the catalyst or the seed to enable me to treat my
own urticaria in an internet forum of all places. You might think I
was lucky in my discovery, and of course you would be right, but then,
in my mind I think I was due some luck.
