I wrote my first “patent” (imagine a 15 year old writing it) in High School for a lock picking device for the 7 pin tumbler tubular “Ace” lock. I machined one in metal shop and went to a locksmith to show him how cool it was… Long story short.. he told me I was a dope for making a lock pick that picked the lock in 45 seconds and allowed the lock pick to be put in a key cutting machine to make a new key in another 45 seconds.
He said when someone lost a key to an Ace lock he made lots of money telling his customers that the locks were high security and could not be picked. Therefore, to open the lock he had to use a $22.00 single use end mill to cut out the tumblers, ruin the $20 dollar lock, and install a new lock and cut 2 more keys for a total of $150 including the “service call”. Or, should he have them watch him pick their lock in 45 seconds and cut new keys for only $12? Silly me! That was one locksmith’s opinion. In the end someone REALLY did patent somethingjust like my idea that I did not get a provisional patent on! You can see something like it below in patent Number 4,094,176:

This little gadget is now in all the toolboxes of locksmiths and I am sure the guy who patented it sold the design for a tidy sum.
Lesson learned.. Get a provisional patent… To do it "on the cheap" you will want to get a "Povisional patent" for only $110 to the US Patent Office by writing it yourself. It is easy to do and my Video Course clearly shows you EVERY step. Once your Provisional Patent is written you get to put "Patent Pending" on your device and enjoy the protection afforded with a patent pending status. You can now go to whoever you want to buy or make your invention and get it done knowing your idea is protected. You will then have one full year to get a non provisional patent that will protect your invention for 17 years.

I will assume you are interested in patents because you have a GREAT IDEA and wonder how to go about getting a patent so that you can sell your idea or make it yourself and make even more money!
You may not have even heard of the term "Provisional Patent"... It is a VERY IMPORTANT legal document offered by the USPTO (U.S. Patent and Trademerk Office). A Provisional Patent is designed for folks JUST LIKE YOU .
I will show you how valuable and easy it is to get a Provisional Patent. I believe EVERY patent should be preceded by a Provisional Patent for many important reasons, the most important of which has to do with supporting your non provisional patent application.
Patent attornies will not like that I am telling you this information... They will charge you at least $5,000 to do what you can do yourself... It seems they like to have you believe their work is very complex so they can justify their $350 hourly rates to do what any secretary with a bit of tutoring can do.
Once you have a patent the rights you have, as a patent holder, are basically that nobody can legally copy your patentented idea and make money on it. If they do you then have the right to take them to court. The strength of a patent is as strong as your legal means to protect it.
There are many patent lawyers who will work with you on contingency if you have a good case for someone infringing on your patent. The laws protect the “little guy” so you really want to get a patent if your idea is a good one! Trust me.. It is worth the $110 to get your provisional patent...

As such I will lead you through a very basic and critically important overview of what you would need to do to see if what you have is viable to patent.
To do this I will walk you through the steps so you can see for yourself. You will find this extremely valuable as it will give you a flavor of what a patent attorney would do.

Provisional Patent
Now that you have a basic understanding of how a patent works there is a nice surprise for you, and is my main teaching.... When you have an idea and not much time or money to get a patent you can get a “Provisional Patent” that only costs you $110 from the USPTO and protects your idea for 1 year and allows you to get a patent (non provisional Patent) on or before 1 year. A Provisional Patent ALSO provides EXTRA support for your patent when you get your non provisional patent that is in force for 17 years. Basically, everything you say in your provisional has to be considered by the examiner. This is VERY GOOD for you. In my Provisional Patent Video Course I explain more in depth why and give you "secret tricks of the trade".
The VERY BEST part about a provisional patent is you do not have to write your claims, and you do not have to do fancy drawings. You simply put down your idea and describe as many variants of your idea as you posibally can and make the drawings to the best of your ability. Just make them so anyone if your field understasnds what they mean. You can even copy the format of the similar patents you have been looking at. A critically important part of what you must do is explain how your patent works so that anyone "skilled in the art" of your field of discovery can make it themselves. The patent office calls this "enabling disclosure" and I discuss this thoroughly in my Video Course. If you make errors here your provisional patent may not be valid. This is part of the "secret tricks of the trade" that I give you in my video course.
Again, the GREAT thing about a provisional application is it only costs $110 AND it is used by the examiner when you file your final “non provisional application”. The examiner gets to wrestle with the numerous equivalents and secondary embodiments of your provisional patent so that your non provisional patent is even stronger.

I would steer clear of some of the larger firms you may find on the Internet boasting that they bring your product to market. Instead, I would not confuse getting something patented with bringing it to market. All too frequently the folks who tell you they will patent your invention and bring it to market are predatory and take more than is “fair” for you. What you really want is a well drafted patent and THEN bring it to market.
Caution on “Big Guys”
Have you seen the “Big Guys” who advertise on the internet? They are those in the top of the search engines. Most of them will tell you big stories of how they took Jill’s project and made her millions. What they do not tell you is what it cost Jill up front. I urge you to consider… Get your patent pending, then look for someone to make the item for you. Or, better yet have it made yourself and make even more! Then, you can have a product that is ready for licensing so you to sell it.
