Too often people believe that the diet itself is the solution. If
it's not dieting, then they feel the answer lies within the right

weight loss, success or failure, places accountability on something

sustained long term, the blame is placed on how these systems failed,

torturous repetition of yo-yo dieting will literally lead you down a
self destructive path. I do not mean to say this to be overly
dramatic, but only to be realistically honest. If you do not

can’t figure out why you haven’t had similar results, your answer
is within your question.
“WHY” can’t I achieve the same results? The answer is that you
don’t have a clearly defined “WHY”. People that yo-yo diet
believe they will be happy when they reach a specific weight but why
do so many people fail with this yo-yo dieting approach of deprivation
and binging?
IT'S A DEATH SPIRAL THAT LEADS TO
YO YO SYNDROME
I’ve heard this referred to as the “Yo-yo syndrome”. First of
all, several studies have shown that when a person starves, dieting on
a very low calorie plan, for every ten pounds of weight they lose,
four to six pounds can come from muscle. Muscles contain water,
vitamins, minerals, electrolytes and amino acids.
If you under eat and do not have enough fuel to meet your daily
energy requirements when you expend more energy by exercising, where
will your body get the fuel it needs to perform the activity as well
as supply your body with the required nutrients? You guessed it;
muscle will have to hand over the nutrients needed.
Consequently if a person diets too harshly they will lose muscle,
strength and their metabolic rate will slow down. Conversely, many
people mistakenly think that as long as they exercise, they can eat
whatever they want. Needing those essential nutrients to function but
not getting it from the foods ingested, the body continues to take
from muscle and over time the result is a weaker and flabbier body.

To illustrate what happens to someone that doesn’t get enough
meals, calories and proteins, consider the following example. Let’s
suppose that our hypothetical male dieter weighs 180 pounds and has
15% body fat. His body composition consists of 27 pounds of fat and
153 pounds of lean body mass.
Let’s suppose that this individual puts on 20 pounds over the next
few years, 15 of it are fat and only 5 pounds is muscle. Now, he tips
the scales at 200 pounds with 42 pounds of body fat, only 158 pounds
of muscle, and is now at 21% body fat.
Seeing the extra fat on his body, our hypothetical dieter decides to
diet down to lose the excess fat that he gained. But if he does this,
the weight he is going to lose is not the same twenty pounds that he
just gained. As he diets down, according to the scale he loses twenty
pounds. At 180 pounds, he has 16% fat, 151 pounds of muscle and 29
pounds of fat. You see, thirteen pounds of his weight loss came from
fat, but seven pounds of his weight loss came from muscle. While he
once again weights 180 pounds, he now has two pounds more fat and two
pounds less muscle and is no longer 15% body fat but rather at 16%.
Not a big deal right?
THE LONG TERM RESULTS ARE FRIGHTENING …
WHY YOU DON'T HAVE TO YO-YO NO MO
Now let’s suppose that the dieter begins craving food intensely.
Suddenly he finds himself binging on sweets and other foods and gains
back the twenty pounds of fat. But something drastic is happening, the
twenty pounds he regains will sit on top of the fat he kept from the
last diet, causing his percentage of body fat to rise. At a body
weight of 200 pounds again, 151 pounds is muscle and 49 pounds is fat.
At 200 pounds, his body fat is now up to 24.5%, when last time he
weighted 200 pounds he was at 21.5% body fat.
If the same cycle is repeated for the next few years, with harsh
diets and infrequent meals, he may once again weigh 180 pounds, but
his body composition will no longer be 15% body fat. It would now look
something like this: he is now at 21% body fat with 142.2 pounds of
muscle and 37.8 pounds of fat. As you can see, he is getting fatter
with each succeeding diet, while losing muscle; he is gaining more and
more fat. Once again he weights 180 pounds but he now has 10.8 pounds
more fat and 10.8 pounds less muscle than before he began dieting
He made the common mistake of thinking that just watching the number
on the weight scale was indicative of his health, but years of this
yo-yo dieting has only left him with less muscle to utilize in
carrying around the added weight. As you age, and this cycle continues
to be repeated, your health deteriorates faster and faster. As you can
see, this individual started out hoping to get thinner but ended up
fatter.
There are two main problems that our hypothetical dieter is going to
encounter that will halt his progress even further. First of all,
since he lost so much muscle his metabolic rate slowed down. Now if he
eats the same number of calories as he did before he began dieting, he
will gain ten pounds a year eating the same amount of food.
Secondly, while he has reached his goal weight, he’s still not
satisfied with the way he looks. In essence, he has become a fatter,
thinner version of his previous self. Unhappy of how he looks, he will
have a tendency to embark on a stricter diet and continue to beat
himself up mentally. Not understanding why he puts the hard work in
but doesn’t see the results, he begins establishing limiting beliefs
that he is broken and that he’s not worthy of being happy or being
loved.
