I am a specialist in Poker Odds, particularly Pre-Flop Starting Hand
Probabilities.

Many beginner, amateur and intermediate poker players ask the
question, "How many Starting Hands should I play?"

The simple answer is "not too many."

The second answer is encapsulated by "it depends."

It depends on how many opponents there are actively involved at the
table, how big your stack is, how big your opponents' stacks are, if
anyone raised before you and how much they raised, how many are to act
behind you, how many limped before you, how big the blinds and antes
are and how loose, neutral or tight your opponents are at the table.
Also, you have to take into account how passive or aggressive your
opponents are in their calling and raising... So all-in-all quite a
lot to think about and take into account!

A loose poker player might generally play 33 - 66% of their Starting
Hands, sometimes even as high as 90%;
A neutral poker player might generally play 25 - 33% of their Starting
Hands;
A tight poker player might generally play less then 25% of their
Starting Hands, sometimes even as low at 10%.

It has been observed that tight poker players who also play
aggressively by raising and reraising far more than just calling
generally are the type of players who win poker tournaments. In cash
games, players tend to play considerably looser, so a more neutral
strategy can often pay off in these games.

David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth grouped what they considered to be
playable Starting Hands from Groups 1 to 8. However, many of their
rankings and groups are debateable, and they were also created for
Fixed Limit Hold 'Em Poker, so they are generally very unhelpful to
use with No Limit Texas Hold 'Em Poker.

I (Adrian Paul Miles) developed the Pokerina Hand Rank system which
categorises every single No Limit Hold 'Em Poker Starting Hand from A
to Z, based upon the average profit made by these hands in real money
games (also known as Expected Value.)

There are also various YouTube videos on this subject at
