Is meditation something you have thought about exploring but didn’t know where to begin?

Let me cure that overwhelm for you right now.
After reading this article you’ll be able to:
Put yourself in an amazing meditative state within 5 and 34 seconds. Understand how being aware of your feelings, emotions and thoughts fuels this ability. Know how to increase this awareness in yourself with a simple exercise.
So keep reading because in a moment I’ll teach you a simple yet highly effective skill which, with only a few minutes practice per day, will give YOU the awareness, clarity and peace of mind that comes with mastering meditation. But let me back up first and explain how I discovered the skill that will allow you to do this… and give you some key insights along the way…
My Story:
I first became interested in self-help in 2000. I learned about meditation, NLP and Hypnosis amongst other things. And no doubt I’ve benefited a lot from learning those disciplines. But one day I made a shocking discovery that showed me that my mindset was not as positive as I had thought…
Key Insight 1: I was accidentally hypnotizing myself… and YOU are doing the same to yourself every single day
I was sitting on a train on my way back from work, staring out the window and day-dreaming. Now I don’t know if you realise this but when you are day-dreaming you are often in a very focused trance state similar to when you are experiencing a deep hypnotic trance. The signs of this are being completely unaware of the outside world, time distortion (time seems to speed up; an hour seems like 15 minutes) and memory loss.
Anyone who has commuted to work by car or public transport has experienced this. Just think back to when you arrived at work or back from bringing the kids to school… do you have any idea what you were thinking about during the commute? Did you ever arrive at your destination and think… “I have no memory of travelling here!” Don’t worry, you were so highly focussed on the task at hand that you didn’t need to record any memories of the journey.
Key Insight 2: I had negative thoughts DESPITE everything I knew about self-help and positive psychology. Yet my discovery made that knowledge more powerful than I could ever imagine.
That day I did catch myself day-dreaming and to be honest I was a quite upset about what I discovered about myself. I was imagining that I started talking to some women on the train and that they weren’t being very friendly to me, to put it mildly. In fact in this day-dream the women were laughing at me, then shouting at me and then started making fun of me in front of all the other people on the carriage. Now nothing remotely like this has ever happened to me in my entire life! Having those kinds of thoughts isn’t really going to help improve your confidence, you’ll agree.
Key Insight 3: Become more aware of the negative feelings, emotions and thoughts you are having every day and you will increase the effectiveness of your meditation 300%
No wonder I was upset. All this time while I had been spending improving myself and I was still having really negative thoughts… literally hypnotizing myself into a negative mindset. So what did it mean, was all the effort invested into self-help a waste of time? Well no, because I had made real improvements in my life, things I couldn’t have dreamt of 10 years ago. On the other hand, there was the niggling thought that I wasn’t quite making the most out of those self-help ideas and skills.
So in that moment I realised a couple of things. First, I had to become much more aware of the thoughts I was having from moment to moment so that I could catch myself when I was being negative and could then use my skills right when I needed them. Second I realised that often it is feelings and emotions that give rise to thoughts. The only reason I was imagining these bad things happening was because I was tired from a long day at work and feeling uncomfortable at being stuck like a sardine in a train carriage that had no air-conditioning. All my mind was doing was creating thoughts to go with my less than optimal physiological and emotional state.
So using all my knowledge about Hypnosis, NLP and meditation I came up with some exercises to help increase what people now refer to as my Emotional Awareness. Within no time I was becoming more aware of my feelings, emotions and thoughts from moment to moment and was able to meditate much more effectively.
Do this exercise right now…
So lets get started with a basic exercise to give you an insight into this increased awareness. First, find yourself a quiet and private room where you won’t be disturbed. Make sure you sit or lie down comfortably and start breathing deeply into your belly. This means that your belly moves in and out as you breath.
When you are ready, close your eyes. Take a deep breath in and as you exhale say to yourself in soft and relaxed voice: ‘I relax my toes’.
Again, breath in deeply and as you exhale say to yourself in an even more relaxed and deeper voice: ‘I relax my feet’. Continue breathing and with every breath out say to yourself that you are relaxing a part of your body. Work your way up from your toes right to the top of your head.
After this you will have created a very relaxed and focussed state in yourself. You won’t be as aware the outside world and much more sensitive to your physical feelings, emotional states and thoughts. Can you see how even a simple exercise like that calms you down and gives you a much better insight into your internal processes. And this is just the start of what I want to teach you.
This is why I’ve created the Mindful Awareness Training System 2.0. The MATS consists of 12 exercises recorded in MP3 format (plus a few other bonuses I’ll describe later).
