Welcome to Lower Blood Pressure Drug Free

the website dedicated to helping people control their blood pressure naturally.

What you won't find here: pills, gimmicks, overpriced gadgets or unsubstantiated claims.
What you will find here: the clinically proven bottom line on drug-free blood pressure control, complete with free samples.

We get asked all the time how in the world we created a drug-free blood pressure control program.  Before we take a closer look at the program itself, here's the background...

I'm the type of guy that can't stand going to the doctor.  I'd rather be sick an extra day than put myself through going to a doctor's office.  In the summer of 2006, I was just about to turn 33 and realized that I hadn't had a checkup since the summer of 1995.  The only reason why I'd gone back then was because I'd just got a job teaching English in Japan and had to have a physical.  That was my last trip to the doctor and it was fine by me.

I was at the supermarket buying my (at the time) usual dinner of a frozen pizza and beer when I walked past the "Free Blood Pressure Check" machine next to the pharmacy.  Hmm?  I wonder what my blood pressure is?  Maybe instead of going to the doctor, I can do this and put it off another ten years?  I sat down for a quick check.  The numbers came out on the display and I checked the chart on the machine.  What?!  This can't be right, there's no way I have high blood pressure, I'm only 32!  This machine must be broken.  I hit the "start" button again.  This time the numbers came back even higher.

After that rude awakening, I broke down and made an appointment for a real check-up.  Sure enough, the picture wasn't good.  Family history?  Straight down the line, high blood pressure on my mom's side.  Diet?  Terrible.  Exercise?  Ha!  When the doctor started to suggest blood pressure drug programs I remember thinking "I'm only 33 and there is no way in heck I'm going to have one of those pill containers

on my kitchen counter with the days marked on it."  When I look back, I'm grateful for that day because nothing's really been the same since.

Right around the same time I was listening to some CDs by an internationally renowned doctor.  He was talking about the health benefits of breathing.  I remember thinking "Breathing?  I breathe all day and of course it's healthy - if I don't do it I die right?"  Of course, he wasn't just talking about "normal" breathing, he was talking about some specific patterns of slow, deep breathing.

Intrigued but skeptical, I started to research this "deep breathing" thing and found that there's actually considerable [clinical research](Contact_Us.html) supporting its health benefits - ranging from permanently reducing blood pressure to helping control stress, anxiety, ADD, insomnia, migraines, chronic pain, the list goes on.  It turns out that slow, deep breathing, when done properly and regularly, triggers the body to break subconscious stress patterns.

The "deep breathing" involves patterns like "1:4:2".  This means you would inhale for a count of one, hold for a count of 4, and exhale for a count of 2.  If you have high blood pressure and do simple slow breathing patterns for 15 minutes a day, 3 to 4 days a week, there's an 82% chance you can permanently reduce your blood pressure.

Here's the catch.  Breathing in set patterns like "1:4:2" is harder than it sounds.  First of all, counting in your head isn't exactly relaxing - and for the method to work best you need to be very relaxed.  Second, within a minute or two of actually getting relaxed, your mind starts to wander, you lose track of your "counts" and you quit.

The problem is you can't get into deep relaxation and count in your head at the same time - it's asking your brain to do two completely opposite things - relax and pay attention - at once.  I realized that in order to really relax and get the full benefits of this "deep breathing," you need something to keep time for you and guide you.

So I got to work composing some 'Guided Breathing' recordings of various chimes and bells to tell me when to inhale and exhale.  Sure enough, this 'Guided Breathing' idea did the trick - now I could really relax and not have to count in my head.  I was happy with the recordings, and even happier with their amazing results on my blood pressure, but something was missing...

Dana and I decided to get away for a bit and took a trip to the beach.  We sat there on the sand staring at the waves and just soaking in the natural beauty.  Just for fun, I tried to inhale as the waves went out, and exhale as they came crashing in.  The connection to the waves, breathing along with the rhythm of nature, was magical - the deepest calm I had ever felt.

I realized that the 'missing something' from my Guided Breathing recordings was all around me - nature.  The best way to get the deepest and fastest relaxation is to breathe with nature.

That was the "Eureka!" moment when our Breathtaking Nature Method series of audio programs was born.

The Breathtaking Nature Method combines the [clinically-proven](Clinical_Research.html) power of Guided Breathing with beautiful, natural vacation destinations from all around the world.  You get to lower your blood pressure while taking a refreshing 15-minute 'mini vacation' to paradise!  Imagine - a blood pressure reduction method that's easy, fun, rejuvenating, has zero side-effects and you actually look forward to doing it...

"Hi Andy & Dana,
Just a short note to tell you, "Thanks" for making it easy to lower my BP without drugs. I'm a part-time flight instructor and my BP was getting close to the point that if I didn't do something about it, I would have to begin medication. Even though the FAA approves most BP prescription drugs, I don't want to deal with it. So, I was optimistic when I found your relaxing program -- I love the owl and thunder best! Anyway, at the end of the first week I was down about 10 points on the top number and at the end of the second week, it's about 15 and dropping. Thank you."
Bob O'Quinn,
Palatine, IL

"My blood pressure was up a couple of years ago.  I was so upset about it all because my father and his side of the family all have hypertension and have had strokes, some fatal, and in the case of Daddy, wiped out his left side.

So, I went online and did some research and found out that guided breathing is an effective method for lowering blood pressure, according to many studies. I thought about getting this expensive contraption for guided breathing that you see advertised in AARP (yes I get that, I'm 54).

After further research, luckily I found and ordered a program just for guided breathing and within three days, spending 15 minutes each day doing the breathing, my blood pressure went from the 160/90's to 118/73! Lesson learned: do the breathing everyday for 15 minutes for the rest of my life.

And following the sounds with your breathing makes it SO easy!  The program is wonderful, for instance in one of them, you breathe in to the sound of birds singing, and then breathe out to the sound of crickets, all with a waterfall in the background. After doing this breathing for 15 minutes you feel so calm and relaxed. I can even feel the blood flowing into my hands, a sure sign that the blood pressure is good.  So I'm putting in an official endorsement."
Victoria O'Neill, Reading, PA

"The simplest and most powerful technique for protecting your health is absolutely free - and literally right under your nose."  Andrew Weil, M.D.

"Amazing. After trying everything on the market, the cure was right inside me the whole time. You showed me how to take control of my body. My blood pressure is finally under control. Thank you!"
Quentin Kostelnik, Tulsa, OK

"Slow breathing signals the brain," says Joseph Marek, MD, a cardiologist and hypertension specialist. "Muscles around blood vessels relax and blood flows more easily."
Prevention Magazine, February 2005

"I must confess I tried some of the pricey gadgets on the market. You do the same thing they do for a much lower price. I tracked my blood pressure on the chart you give. Sure enough, day by day, it went down. I wish I'd googled you a long time ago. Thank you."
Tom Faust, Flagstaff, AZ

"TRIAL RESULTS: Significant reductions in both office BP and home BP without side effects with 82% responders and good compliance.
CONCLUSIONS: Resistant hypertensives can benefit from and are compliant with self-treatment by device-guided slow breathing."
American Journal of Hypertension, 2003 Jun;16(6):484-7

"I'm blown away that this method isn't common knowledge.  I tell friends and it's like they think I'm crazy - until they try it and it works for them too. Great program, great customer service, keep it up."  John Day, Ocala, FL

Guided Breathing, a closer look:

The traditional solution for high blood pressure is expensive drugs...

We treat the symptoms and ignore the cause.

It's like putting a band-aid on top of a thorn - wouldn't it make more sense to remove the thorn first?

What modern medicine largely ignores is the amazing power of our bodies to heal themselves.

Breathtaking Nature is a specially designed Guided Breathing program that harnesses the same power of the drugs - naturally.

What causes high blood pressure?  A key factor is simple over-constriction of the blood vessels. Our bodies are in "overdrive" from the stresses of our lives.

The key is to stop the overdrive.  You just need to 'tell' your blood pressure to go down.  Breathtaking Nature shows you how 'ask'.

The body has some codes - like a combination lock.  You just need to learn the simple combinations and you can unlock natural release mechanisms that you had no idea were there.

Taking pills is one way - but they are expensive, and have [side effects](BP_Blog.html#Side_Effects).  Most dangerous of all - they merely cover up the real underlying issues and let them get worse.  For a tiny fraction of their cost and with only very positive side effects, Breathtaking Nature will show you how to unlock natural stress relief.

Breathtaking Nature shows you how to control your previously uncontrolled "automatic" subconscious reactions.  You will learn how to reverse the negative feedback loops that contribute to high blood pressure.

How could something as simple as breathing control blood pressure?

As with so much in medicine, we know that it works, but the precise mechanisms aren't fully understood.  There are four main theories:

1)   One theory is that it’s actually not so much about relaxation and has more to do with helping the body get salt out.  When people are under stress, they tend to take shallow breaths.  This “inhibitory breathing” in turn makes the blood more acidic and makes the kidneys less efficient at removing sodium from the blood.

In [research conducted by Dr. David Anderson](http://www.grc.nia.nih.gov/branches/crb/danderson.htm) of the National Institute of Health, inhibitory breathing was linked to elevated salt and higher blood pressure.

“If you sit there under-breathing all day, as most people do, and you have high salt intake, your kidneys may be less effective at getting rid of salt,” said Anderson.

When people do slow, deep breathing, “They may be changing their blood gases and the way their kidneys are regulating salt,” Anderson hypothesizes.

2)   Another theory is that Guided Breathing increases nitric oxide transmission in our blood.  “Nitric oxide is a substance that helps keep our blood vessels open,” says Dr. Elijah Saunders, head of hypertension research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Cardiology Department.

The endothelium cells (the inner lining of our blood vessels) use nitric oxide to tell the muscles that surround them to relax.  This process is known as “vasodilation” and results in increased blood flow.

In [research conducted by Dr. Nick Vaziri](http://www.healthcare.uci.edu/news_releases.asp?filename=nitricOxideAndBloodPressure.htm), of the UC Irvine College of Medicine, high blood pressure was linked with impaired nitric oxide pathways.  It appears that Guided Breathing may help keep our bodies' nitric oxide levels in better balance - allowing our blood vessels to relax naturally.

3)   A third theory is that slow, deep breathing helps us oxygenate.  Our brains are only 2% of our body weight yet they consume 20% of the oxygen we inhale.

“Slight changes in oxygen content in the brain can alter the way a person feels and behaves,” says [Dr. Daniel G. Amen](http://www.amenclinics.com/clinics/), author of Change Your Brain, Change Your Life.

The shallow breaths associated with stress and negative emotions don’t allow us to get enough oxygen.  “The oxygen content in the stressed person’s blood is lowered,” says Dr. Amen, leading to more stress in a downward spiral.

The answer is to break the cycle by recognizing when our shallow breathing isn’t serving our best interests.  Slow, deep breathing gives our body the oxygen it needs and signals the body to get things back in balance.

4)   The fourth theory centers around a concept known as "entrainment."  This is the tendency of the brain to mimic a stimulus.  For example, when you hear slow, mellow Jazz, the electrical currents in your brain will get calm too.  It's thought that through slow, deep breathing, your brain takes a cue to break the stress cycle.

The fascinating thing is that the break in the stress cycle isn't just temporary.  After a few weeks of regular deep relaxation practice, the "calm" centers of our brains start to become permanently more active.

[Research conducted by Dr. Richard Davidson](http://www.psychosomaticmedicine.org/cgi/content/full/65/4/564) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison compared brain activity and immune response in two groups: "deep relaxation" vs. control group.  The "deep relaxation" group showed increased immune response and increased activity in the left prefrontal cortex (associated with positive temperament) of the brain.  It appears that regular relaxation isn't temporary - it actually helps the brain rewire.

"What we've found is that the [deep relaxation] trained mind, or brain, is physically different from the untrained one," says Davidson.

Theory aside, the great news is that we know Guided Breathing works.

Double-blind clinical trials have shown reductions of up to 36 points diastolic and 20 points systolic.

The Breathtaking Nature methodology is endorsed and/or taught by Harvard Medical School, The Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, Rush Presbyterian Hospital, The American Heart Association and other leading medical institutions.

How long does Breathtaking Nature last?
You will feel results from your first 15 minute session.
You will get results that last throughout the day in 4 to 6 weeks.

You've heard the expression "objects in motion tend to stay in motion."
The same is true of our emotional states.  When we experience a stress trigger, the body will continue to show subconscious stress reactions long after the trigger is gone.

The secret is to do a "pattern interrupt."
It's like a switch inside us that's either on "stress" or "calm".  The Breathtaking Nature method will show you how to turn stress off - and keep "calm" on.

Relaxation CDs are great.
But... they don't show you how to unlock the magic codes of your body.
The Breathtaking Nature Method teaches Guided Breathing - the specific patterns for breaking the "stress response" and triggering the "relaxation response."

This is a life-changing skill.

The Breathtaking Nature Method includes 7 audio programs, 80 minutes each:

Ready to give it a listen?  Here are some samples.[]

A few tips and notes:

1)  Feel free to take a quick look at the [Instruction Manual](uploads/Lower_Blood_Pressure_Drug_Free.pdf) for tips and some basic safety precautions.

2)  In the full version of the program, the first thing we do is find your "personal relaxation zone" - your unique breath rates that give you the deepest relaxation.  For these samples, it's best to start at 8 breaths per minute - if that pace is too fast, just skip down to a slower pace.  On the full version, you're in complete control of the pace of the breathing cues.

3)  Please be sure to hit the "pause" button before moving on to the next sample (if you don't, the samples with play over each other).

4)  Headphones sound best.  The small speakers on most computers will leave you missing out on a lot of the sounds in the recordings.  Also, we set the volume on these samples a little loud - there's a volume control slider under the 'play' button to turn it down if you want.

5)  Please keep in mind that these samples are just small snippets - they're just meant to give you a feel for how the system sounds - without spoiling the show when you get the full version.

Sample #1:
Owl Talk  (8 breaths per minute)

(inhale with the first owl, hold during the gap, exhale with the second owls' reply)

Sample #2:
Rainforest Dawn  (6 breaths per minute)

(inhale with the mockingbird, hold during the gap, exhale with the grasshoppers)

Sample #3:
Oceanside Campfire  (5 breaths per minute)

(inhale with the tree frog, hold during the gap, exhale with the crickets)
