My name is Greg Herbert, that's me at the top of the page with my friends Teddy and Gemma and for the past 12 years my family and I have been enjoying the sweet taste of home grown tomatoes every summer. You see I guess growing tomatoes and other vegetables is in my blood. My father and one of my uncles always had a vegie garden, and I always loved to get involved.
My father’s vegie garden was a little bit different to say the least. He grew everything from tomatoes,corn, beans, watermelons, pumpkins, squashes, marrows, zucchinis, more watermelons, potatoes, cucumbers in fact just about everything you could think of. Obviously this took up a bitmore space than your suburban backyard. Between 1 - 3 acres actually, and the funny thing was he gave most of it away to friends and family. I think he used to like to brag about the size of everything he grew – BIG, just like he was.
When I was around 10 years old he used to fill up the old utility with all the vegies he had grown and I would drive the old beast up the road next to the old picture cinema and sell them. The good part about that was I got to keep the money.
Now the one thing that I do remember the most about growing up with all those fresh vegies around was the sweet smell when they were cut with a knife, and the taste was even sweeter. My father always said “there’s one way to tell a good tomato sonny, when you cut it with a knife and turn it upside down, nothing falls out of it”. And he's right you know!
My uncle on the other hand had a more modest vegie garden, around 120sq feet. He had a very simple fertilizer solution which anyone can make up. He liked to brag about his “Grosse Lisse’s”, he reckoned they were the best around, and looking back I would have to agree with him. His simple but effective fertilizer seemed to make all the difference.
