FROM: Jon Kubis
DATE: May 8, 2009

Dear Friend and Fellow Music Lover,

I LOVE GUITAR... especially the great guitar tones on the radio
today and the past 30 years.

Those tracks are fresh in my mind--for me it's Clapton, Page,
Hendrix, Eddie, and Hiram Bullock. Timeless guitar tones that leap out
of the speakers as if you're sitting right in front of them.

And I think you and I are a lot alike... we love guitar, and we love
killer guitar tones. If you didn't, you wouldn't be here now reading
this letter.

My name is Jon Kubis and I've been fortunate enough to make a career
out of playing and engineering, but even if it's not how I made my
living, I'd still be sitting at home writing and recording--it's part
of me. Let's face it... _YOU DON'T PLAY BECAUSE YOU CAN, YOU PLAY
BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO_.

BUT THE REAL STORY IS HOW I GOT HERE...

You see, I actually started as a recording engineer in the mid 90's.
I started by recording a demo for my band at the time. I really didn't
have much of a problem getting good keyboard sounds or bass tones, but
drums and guitar baffled me. Every time I miked up a guitar cab, the
tone was scratchy, fuzzy, blurry. Guitar players would listen back and
tell me "it sounds okay, but it doesn't really sound like my amp."

Back then I thought that the magic was all in the effects and the EQ
and all the crazy things that could be done AFTER the guitar was
recorded. _I COULDN'T BE MORE WRONG!_

I had fallen prey to the myth that recording guitar was as simple
as tossing up a mic in front of the cab and pressing record. Turns out
those benchmark guitar sounds I had loved through the years, on all
those great recordings-- _they sounded like that long before the
engineer even pressed the Record button!_

Truth is, I eventually began telling clients "I don't do guitars. I
can record and mix everything else" because I felt my recorded guitar
tones were lacking that much. I didn't _GET IT _like great guitar
engineers really do. (That took some time as you'll soon see...)

One time I was assisting at a recording session up in Hollywood. The
session booked next door happened to be a guitar recording session
with a top notch Grammy-award-winning engineer. When my session was
done, I hopped over and pleaded to be a fly on the wall.

What I saw amazed me--an impressive attention to detail when dialing
up tones, and most importantly, when selecting and placing
microphones. Sure there was a ton of great gear being used in the
process, but it was at that moment,

I REALIZED I HAD BEEN GOING ABOUT IT ALL WRONG.

After the session, I stuck around, asked a few questions and got the
answers that have formed the basis for many years of happy guitar
recording (and some great tones!).

The next recording session I did that involved guitars, I didn't
even blink. I knew that it would take trial and error to get the
perfect recorded guitar tracks for the project, but at least I knew
what path to go down.

Fast-forward a few years and suddenly every guitarist I know wants
to know how to get their home recording setup up and running, and how
to record their own killer guitar tracks at home without having to PAY
SOMEONE else for studio time.

I was making so many house calls getting my friends' (and their
friends!) studios up and running that when the recording instructor
retired at my local college, they called me up and asked me to teach a
class in Home Recording

It became obvious in the first year of teaching that there are
literally thousands of would-be recording guitarists just waiting to
start cutting great tracks! The passion, the will, and the excitement
was there.

THAT WASN'T THE PROBLEM...

The problem was that there are _TOO MANY OPTIONS_ between software,
interfaces, and recording techniques. My recording students didn't
know _where to start!_ Every year there's more and more gear and
software available which further complicates the problem.

I'VE TRIED THEM ALL!

Every software on the Mac and every software on Windows. I've gotten
to see which softwares my students have gravitated towards as well as
which are the easiest to learn. I've recorded entire albums in almost
every software, and recorded individual songs using -every- software.
I've seen over the years as software has gotten more powerful, some of
it has become easier to use, some of it hasn't.

Now everyone asks my helpful opinion to cut through the hype. With a
half dozen major competing recording softwares and hundreds of audio
interfaces, my job has become recommending good-sounding stuff that's
easy to set up, easy to use and doesn't cost a whole lot.

I've recorded and mixed tracks for countless albums, radio ads, TV
shows, and films. During that entire time I've kept a full roster of
students. Sometimes as many as 70 per semester, and rarely less than
40.

As you can imagine, many people have come to me for recording help
because they've either heard from past students or have heard my
recordings. So I teach a lot of aspiring recording musicians every
day. IT'S AWESOME, let me tell you.

When the internet came along, I was as excited as everyone else to
see the technology emerge. And like a lot of people, I was also
DISAPPOINTED to see so much _bad information_ pushed on so many
unsuspecting people.

I'm not saying that everyone out there in cyberspace is a _con
artist_, far from it. It's just that most people talking about
recording on the Internet are engineer-brains and not musicians. let's
just say that it is _really rare that I come across material that is
easy to understand._.

So teaching a class a couple of years ago, complaining that I
couldn't find any decent reference material for my students, one said
"why don't you make your own?" AND THE REST IS HISTORY...

_DO YOU SHARE SOME OF THESE COMMON FRUSTRATIONS?_

* \"WHERE DO I START?" - Most people have a hard time knowing where
to start, and what interface or software to use? What about Pro Tools?
Is Logic good? Do I need a Mac? My friend uses Sonar, do I have to use
it too? The list of questions is almost endless.
* \"I DON'T UNDERSTAND ALL THE ENGINEER-SPEAK." - Before I ever set
foot in a studio as an engineer, I was a musician first. There's
plenty of material on the web about recording guitar for engineers but
not a whole lot of easy to use recording information for guitarists.
You shouldn't need a degree or a certificate in recording to cut
nice-sounding guitar tracks.
* \"I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO BUY." - Everyone online is trying to tell
you that their product does everything you need. The problem is they
don't record guitar, they sell widgets. Forget about recording
magazines--they're in the business of selling advertising so they
rarely publish negative reviews.
* \"I'VE GOT ALL THIS STUFF BUT...\" you're not sure how to hook it
up, or how to use it? The manuals are written for engineers, DJ's, and
keyboard players. I can't tell you how many dozens of times I've shown
guitarists how to accomplish a few simple things with their recording
setup and heard "I can do that?"

SO WHAT'S ALL THIS GONNA COST ME?

Let's face it... we guitar players are a weird bunch and I'll admit
it freely. We'll run out and spend $2500 (or more!) on a AAA top Les
Paul or a '60's Custom Shop Strat without batting an eye. It's like a
drug... we _have_ to _have_ it (and you know what I mean.) I must have
20 different pedals just on the floor in my studio.

And to make that kind of investment and not get the absolute most
out of it just seems like it _ought to be a crime_... and I just don't
want to see that happen to you.

It's not uncommon to find packages out there in internet-land
costing as much as $76 that just barely cover the basics of using a
software like Pro Tools, and I just can't stand it. There's just no
way to really give you the kind of value and instruction you deserve
in a single software-related course. The techniques you'll learn here
will work with ANY recording software.

How To Record My Guitar is OVER A DOZEN DETAILED STEP-BY-STEP
INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS! There is enough material here to take you
through a semester recording course and several private consultations
with me... that's a whopping $680 if you take them with me privately.
Plus you'd have to take a test! :)

_But today you aren't going to pay anywhere near that..._

Nope... if you decide to invest in HOW TO RECORD MY GUITAR by

new content and videos all the time, plus my costs are on the rise
just like everyone else's, and if you come back tomorrow, the price
will likely be higher.
