GRAPE VINE GROWING AND WINE MAKING

The history of grape growing and wine making is relatively as old as
humans.  The process has been seen in all the world throughout all
different civilizations.  Even today, grape vine growing and wine
making is very much worth the effort, and reaps many rewards.

You must first grow the grapes, before you can enjoy your first
glass of homemade wine.  There are two types of  grape varieties to
select from when you first begin planting the grapevine; these are the
hybrid and the European grape different varieties.  Typical grape
growing areas such as California usually use European varieties.  If
you live in an area that has a shorter season for growing, you are
then limited to choose hybrid varieties.  The hybrid grapes are bred
to have a hardiness throughout the winter as well as a resistance to
diseases. Since wine is available in white or red, you need to
consider this when choosing the variety of grapes for growing.  One
of the most important things to remember about grape growing is that
because they are perennial plants it will typically be almost three
years until you should be able to harvest the first crop.  But, the
good news is that the grapes quality will be reflected on the
grapevines, not the winemaker.

THE GRAPE VINE GROWING SPACE

You need  to make sure you offer the grapevines an appropriate
growing site, that accesses full sunlight combined with a soil that is
nutrient-poor.  If  the grapes are growing in soil that is
nutrient-poor and it stays dry, the vine will then stress out.  The
stressing out of the vine will result in the production of small
grapes.  Winemakers rely on these smaller grapes because of the
grape's skin which contains the flavor and color which is needed for
wine.   The larger berries are more appetizing as fruit to eat
because they contain more juice and less skin.

AMAZING GRAPE HARVEST

When the time has come to harvest the grapes to make wine at home,
you should first start with grapes that have ripened fully and are
disease free.  The majority of hybrid grapes typically are very
acidic.  As a result of this you will need to go the a wine making
shop and purchase chemicals which will bring down the acidity to the
appropriate level before adding the wine yeast.  When it is time for
you to ferment your grapes you then will add yeast. There are
Different kinds of yeasts available for your winemaking.  Their
purpose is to add distinctive flavors and characteristics subtly in
the wine.  Fermentation can take approximately a week, after which it
is then ready to start the aging process.  Aging will take a few
months to several years for completion.  When the wine appears
crystal-like clear you are ready to bottle it. The wine will need to
sit again to age it a few more months in this step as well.  As it is
common knowledge, you  will realize as your wine is sitting, that the
longer you age it, the finer the finished taste.  Wine bottles and
corks can be purchased at your local wine shop.

This is one of many old traditions that is very much worth your time
and your effort you invest into it.  You will have become an expert
in grape vine growing  to make wine at home.  Then when the right
time has come to open your very first bottle you have especially made,
your family and friends will admire your wine and be amazed at your
new acquired skills.
