Welcome to Ponds of Koi
So what brought you here? Why keep Koi.....not goldfish? Are you thinking of building a koi pond? Are you interested in Koi keeping as a hobby? Do you want to know how to go about designing a koi pond?
I have been fascinated by koi for years but it wasn't love at first sight, more of a friendship that blossomed into a full blown romance.
I started out with goldfish. In fact if I'm totally honest I started out with a water feature, that grew into a pond. Once the pond and water feature were finished I felt that they lacked something so I put in some goldfish.
The great thing about goldfish is that they are easy to keep. The pond that contains goldfish is a fairly well balanced eco system. They don't disturb the natural balance of a pond, if anything they contribute to it by eating the underwater vegetation and then creating fertiliser for it through their own waste.
Koi Pond
It was when I decided to add Koi to the pond that the problems started and I quickly learned that Koi, although closely related to goldfish, are much harder to keep and look after. Despite the hard work and potential expense of koi keeping, I still feel that it is one of the most worthwhile hobbies.
This site tells you what I have taken years to learn about the koi keeping hobby; from what to think about when designing a koi pond through to tips and tricks to help you cope with the seasons and keep your koi in peak condition.

When you decide to take up the koi keeping hobby and build a Koi pond you are building much more than a water feature in your garden. You are building a home for your pets that is tailor made to create the perfect living environment. There is a lot more to consider with a koi pond than there ever will be with a goldfish pond.
You need to be prepared to research the subject, study it, create a detailed plan and work hard to get the right type of koi pond built. If you do all of that you can succeed at Koi keeping. We have a rannge of useful [books](Books-on-Koi.html) available.
So, think long and hard about your reasons for wanting a koi pond before you do anything else. If it's the koi keeping hobby that you are set on then you will be starting a rewarding hobby that will bring you years of enjoyment.
