What Pictures Don't Reveal...

You can see the visible differences in our physiques in the pictures above. But what those pictures don't reveal is just how much the excess fat was effecting our relationship and our lives.

Just the other day Scott was standing in front of the mirror with his shirt off and he shared something with me that he had never revealed before...

He told me how embarrassed he used to be when he looked in the mirror, how uncomfortable it felt to squeeze into a size 32 pair of jeans when he should have been wearing a 36, and how he felt like such a fraud because he was a personal fitness trainer and he had gained 40 pounds of fat.

But here's what shocked me...

Scott revealed that he was embarrassed for me to see him naked and that's why he stopped initiating any sexual contact and would actually shy away from it.

...and here I thought that our plummeting sex life was all because of me.

We Were Unconsciously Sabotaging Each Other

We must have tried to lose weight a dozen times in the past, but each time we would fall off the wagon. That's pretty crazy for a couple who is well educated in fitness, nutrition, and the mental component of fat loss. We're experts in the field and yet we couldn't stick to a program for more than 6 weeks.

It took us a little while, but finally we discovered that we were sabotaging each other. Every time that Scott was heading out the door to go to the gym I would make a subtle comment like, "Must be nice to get to workout!" This immediately triggered Scott's defenses and would lead to an arguement of some kind. But what Scott didn't realize is that this was my cry for help. I wanted the time to workout as well.

It was the subtle little comments that were sabotaging us. As surprising as it may sound, a comment like, "I love you just the way you are" can hold a person back from achieving a leaner and more desirable body.
The Aha Moment...
 
It finally hit us... all along we had been approaching weight loss as individuals and we were working against each other. It was time for us to work together as a team toward a common goal... and that common goal was much more than just six pack abs. We wanted to bond as a couple and get the old sparks back in our relationship from when we found it impossible to keep our hands off each other.
 
What we did was schedule a photo shoot. This gave us a concrete deadline and it was something that we were doing together. We committed to following a diet and our workout program for a 12 week time period and we made the promise to not sabotage each other any more.

It's important to note that our journey to fat loss success was not perfect. Even though we had the powerful motivation of a photo shoot there were still obstacles and challenges along the way.
 
The difference between these obstacles and challenges compared to ones that we faced in the past was that we were able to overcome them much quicker because of the team effort and support that we shared. 
 
The day of the photo shoot was absolutely thrilling. I got my hair done that day, which made me feel even sexier and we arrived at the studio together. Simply taking part in the photo shoot alone was a reward in itself.

Embracing each other for the pictures, and admiring the accomplishments that we each achieved as we watched the other get their individual shots taken was an incredibly bonding experience. Then to see the visual results with our pictures in print, made it all hit home for us. We had achieved six pack abs and we had done it together.

Later that day we also celbrated by treating ourselves to dinner and a night on the town. This gave us a great opportunity to reflect on our journey together and how working as a team helped us achieve incredible fat loss results faster than we had ever done in the past.

The bikini that you see me wearing in the picture above was purchased within the first few days of us deciding to book the photo shoot. This was a major motivator for me to stay on track with our program.

I hung the bikini on our bedroom door so it would be the first thing that I saw in the morning and the last thing that I looked at before I went to bed. It had been a very long time since I had ever worn a bikini and I was really looking forward to wearing it with confidence.

The pants that you see Scott wearing in this picture are the same pair that he was desperately trying to squeeze into. It's amazing how tight they were on him before we began our transformation.

It was actually very entertaining to see his pants get looser every week to the point they were falling off him if he didn't wear a belt. Our children would laugh at him and say that they could see his underwear.

This journey has definitely had a positive impact on our children. It was great to see their reaction to the photos and the appreciation of the human body. It's also been great to see our children get involved in our workout sessions. Our kids often do HIIT with us. They'll be right along our side doing burpees, skipping, running up and down the stairs, doing jumping jacks, or performing mountain climbers. They have actually become our daily reminder of fitness because they are constantly asking us when we are going to be working out.
