FROM: NICOLE BACHELOR
MASTER OF TELECOMMUTING SUCCESS
San Francisco, CA
"Virtual Presence Coach"
Dear Telecommuters and Teleworkers,
You're probably at the point where I was, and that is you are
WORKING FAR TOO HARD, MAKING DECENT MONEY, but you want to take more
control over your life and your schedule. No matter what you've tried
so far, that control has not happened.
You are tired of LONG HOURS, LONG COMMUTES, MISSING ONE-TIME
MILESTONES WITH YOUR CHILDREN. You don't get to take off to see your
kids' school plays, you can't easily take a long vacation or travel
where you want to go because you don't have enough vacation days. You
still have to put on your makeup and heels or that constricting tie
and jacket, fight traffic, push through the weekly grind, counting the
days until the weekend.
You're sick of wasting time, dealing with unnecessary interruptions,
not being able to choose where you do what you do, trapped in a small,
dismal cubicle where you can't shut the door on those around you to
get your work done within the deadlines your boss has piled onto you.
You constantly get pulled in different directions, people dump work
in your lap, dragging you away from what you're trying to get done
because it's easy to catch you. You get stuck in the office until
late, don't have time to pick up the kids and get dinner cooking so
you're eating pizza for the fourth time this week.
In fact many people suffer these frustrations. And that is because
they just couldn't find the answers, until now!
You're successful in your career, but it's time to TAKE CONTROL OVER
HOW AND WHERE YOU WORK.
You want to be able to work when you want, where you want, and do
what you want, when you want.
The ultimate freedom of getting your job done the way you you know
best how to do it.
When my first son was born, I couldn't find a way to keep the
connection with him, to be present and involved in his life and be
there when he needed me.
That was until I discovered telecommuting, and more importantly, how
to telecommute successfully - which became a way for me to get the
freedom I had been searching for, with the control I wanted to succeed
in my career on my own terms.
Excluding successful telecommuting as a strategy, I couldn't find
this freedom anywhere else. I couldn't secure any long-term part-time
work that met my financial requirements. I couldn't find a corporate
environment that let me control my destiny and didn't know how to
maintain my income striking it out on my own.
THAT'S WHY I KNOW IT CAN WORK FOR YOU TOO!
WHERE IS THE CONTROL YOU SEEK?
When I finished grad school, I chose the large corporation I work at
today, in part because I knew down the road I'd want to start a family
and this company was well-known for their family-friendly policies and
was at the top of the lists for best places for working mothers. So
when my son was born I assumed I'd have no difficulty negotiating a
part-time employment arrangement with my manager. Although my manager
seemed willing, his management chain (which was new after a recent
reorganization) wanted all their staff giving 110% all the time, and
didn't want anyone who wasn't putting in long hours.
I WAS DEVASTATED! I had stuck with the particular group I was in
even though I hadn't been enjoying the work lately because I figured
I'd have the highest likelihood of getting a part-time job in a role
in which I'd already established and proven myself.
So I started looking around for other jobs internally within my
company. I spoke to the new manager in the group I had previously
worked for and with recommendations from my former coworkers, she was
happy to bring me in. While she couldn't let me work part-time (again,
due to her management chain), she offered to let me telecommute
exclusively and gave me a lot of control over my working hours. I knew
this was THE BEST OFFER I was likely to get and jumped at the chance.
YOUR SEARCH IS OVER
I soon found that telecommuting exclusively was an incredible
alternative. I saved at least 5 hours per week just from avoiding the
commute. I became MORE EFFICIENT with my work because I avoided the
constant interruptions and time-sucking gossip sessions with my
coworkers - allowing me to get my job done in less time.
And best of all, when I took breaks from work I could step out of my
home office and cuddle my baby boy who was home with the nanny. I was
able to continue nursing - whenever the baby was hungry my nanny would
tap on my door and I'd take a quick break to feed him. Or, if I was on
a phone meeting, my nanny would bring him to me and I'd nurse right
there in my home office while I worked.
Working from home also gave me ENORMOUS PEACE OF MIND in inviting a
complete stranger into my house to care for my new baby. I had the
visibility into how my new nanny was interacting with my son and she
had the advantage of being able to ask me questions as she learned my
son's schedule, feeding habits, and general quirks.
And when my son was sick, I could take a break when he was feeling
at his worst and PROVIDE HIM THE COMFORT THAT ONLY HIS MOTHER COULD
GIVE.
All these advantages allowed me to continue my close connection with
my son after my maternity leave was over, deepening and strengthening
my bond with him. I believe what SEEMED LIKE A DISASTER WHEN I FOUND I
COULDN'T WORK PART-TIME WAS ACTUALLY A BLESSING. Telecommuting
exclusively full-time was even better for my relationship with my baby
than a part-time job if I'd had to go into the company office to
perform it.
[1]
MAKING IT WORK
SO WHAT MADE ME DIFFERENT FROM THE THOUSANDS WHO TRY TO WORK AT HOME
FOR A FEW DAYS AND END UP RIGHT BACK IN THE OFFICE AGAIN? WHY DON'T
SOME PEOPLE SUCCEED, WHILE OTHERS DO?
WHAT MADE ME SUCCEED? I NEEDED TO. I couldn't fathom the idea of
long days away from my new baby, missing his first steps, not knowing
that the reason he was cranky at night was because he hadn't eaten
much during the day, having to ask for information about how he was
doing from a stranger. But I couldn't give up my career (or income)
and become a full-time stay-at-home mom. I needed to make a drastic
change to get my work to work with my life.
So I took a risk with my career. I accepted a full-time job with a
telecommuting option - not knowing if that would give me the freedom
and flexibility I wanted. Not knowing if the new job was the best
option for my long-term career goals. Not knowing if telecommuting
would slow my career down or affect my performance in a negative way.
So I dove in with both feet, and discovered the many potential
pitfalls and unique challenges that come with a telecommuting job.
Now before you panic, or cringe at this thought or risk, THERE IS A
SAFE WAY TO DO THIS.
[2]
A FORMULA FOR TELECOMMUTING SUCCESS
When I started telecommuting I found there were many challenges and
PLACES TO TRIP AND FALL DOWN. I had no idea how different working from
home really was compared to working in the office. I didn't realize
what challenges existed working in a home environment, how balancing
work vs. home life could become even harder while telecommuting, how
to keep my visibility with my boss and coworkers even when I wasn't in
sight every day. But if it wasn't for my stumbling over these
challenges, I wouldn't be able to help you protect your career based
on what I have learned. MY STRUGGLES ARE YOUR GAIN.
I looked around at others who were trying to telecommute and
realized they were trying to work from home exactly the same way as
they did when they were in the office. They expected the same rapport
and relationships with their coworkers, without any modifications to
their work style. They expected to put the same level of effort into
focusing their time and energy on work and get the same results on
their productivity.
And this just doesn't work.
The answer you need is a formula for success. You need someone to
spell out the pitfalls, the challenges, the problems that can occur,
and lay out clearly the exact changes you need to make in your style
and work habits to avoid these and continue your successful career.
[3]
BUILDING THE FORMULA FOR TELECOMMUTING SUCCESS
After I started telecommuting, I started to encounter the challenges
that all telecommuters experience. How to maintain visibility with
your boss and coworkers? How to build strong relationships when you
don't see your coworkers? How to interact effectively with others when
you can't see their body language and facial expressions? How to
maintain your work-life balance when your work and your life occur in
the same place? How to avoid the distractions around the house that
call you away from your desk?
I learned the hard way some of the time, making my own mistakes. I
probably burned a few bridges, damaged a few relationships that I'll
never completely fix, took a few mis-steps in my performance that took
effort and time to recover from. But slowly and gradually I learned. A
little inspiration here, a few words of advice from a manager there, a
few confided discussions with a trusted coworker over there. I picked
up small techniques, hints, and tips that helped me become a better,
more efficient, more successful contributor to my company. AND AS MY
EYES OPENED TO WHAT PITFALLS WERE OUT THERE, I ACTIVELY STARTED TO
SEEK ADVICE AND SUGGESTIONS FROM OTHERS WHO WERE ALSO WORKING FROM
HOME OR WORKING WITH PEOPLE THEY WEREN'T FACE-TO-FACE WITH.
[4]
BECOMING A TELECOMMUTING EXPERT
Over time I started to move from 'novice' to 'expert' in the area of
telecommuting and virtual presence. I found people ASKING ME FOR TIPS
AND TECHNIQUES in how I handled various aspects of telecommuting. I
watched my performance reviews grow better and better, to the point
where I was achieving top rankings in my area. All this while
telecommuting exclusively!
One day while visiting with a new neighbor who had children close to
my own kids' age, as we watched the kids play the subject of
telecommuting came up. She told me she had just been assigned to work
with an overseas team and was having real problems building
relationships, communicating effectively via phone and email, and
maintaining her visibility remotely. She was facing a lot of the
issues that I had been faced with as a telecommuter. We spent the next
few hours with her grilling me and picking my brain on every technique
I used for how I effectively worked with my team and performed my job
even though I was not physically in the same office with them!
[5]
A BOOK IS BORN
After that conversation, I realized how many people were desperately
struggling to succeed in their careers, working in a remote
environment. Time is becoming more precious as more is asked of us. We
search to minimize wasted time in any way possible - especially when
that wasted time is doing something we hate like sitting in traffic.
And in the wake of today's new world of the internet, remote access
technologies, email, IM - that allow people to work together over any
distance - suddenly commuting into the office every day doesn't make
sense any more. Heck, your coworkers may not even be in the same
office or maybe not even in the same country as you are. People are
trying to take advantage of this opportunity - using this to their own
benefit - and getting what they want out of work, controlling where
and when they work, in this new environment.
BUT... working hard, doing well in your job, and then watching it
all fall apart because you're missing the few simple techniques you
need to succeed when you telecommute, is really tragic - and I
couldn't stand to watch this happen anymore.
So I decided to take EVERYTHING I HAD LEARNED FROM MY OWN
EXPERIENCES and all the other experienced from folks out there who
have worked remotely, and put them in a clearly laid out set of simple
techniques, that anyone could follow to success.
It is a formula for going from "Wanting to telecommute" to
"Telecommuting, and doing it successfully."
And all I did was take all my experiences and the vast information I
had gained from others like me, and put them all in a single place so
you don't have to spend hours, days, weeks searching the internet for
tidbits and scraps of disjoint advice.
THINK OF THIS AS YOUR ONE-STOP-SHOP FOR EVERYTHING YOU EVER NEEDED
TO KNOW ABOUT TELECOMMUTING.
WHAT NOBODY ELSE WILL TELL YOU
If your first step is to try to find a telecommuting job, there are
dozens, if not hundreds, of websites out there that advertise these.
MOST ARE SCAMS AND RIPOFFS, where you pay to get into the program that
promises to get you a job where you can work from the comfort of your
own home (hint - _never_ pay for information about a job opportunity
or for the privilege to apply). But these normally turn out to be
pyramid schemes where your new job is to now entice others to pay to
get the same information from you! Or people pay large amounts for an
inventory of cheap parts that they are paid to assemble and sell -
only the quality is so poor, you can't assemble the products, and
can't get your money back.
A few sites do have useful information about actual, valid job
postings that allow telecommuting work, but they just point you to the
job listings and THEN YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN.
I promise to provide you a wealth of information about _HOW_ TO
SUCCEED even after you have attained the telecommuting work. No-one
else prepares you for that. You're just on your own and it's sink or
swim. My book provides time-tested, simple, easy-to-apply techniques
that you can start using from day one on your job to make sure you can
hang onto that great arrangement you've worked so hard to set up, and
to even excel in it!

\"I WAS UNEXPECTEDLY DELIGHTED\"
I have worked from my home, firstly as an employee and more recently
as a business owner and business consultant, for nearly 15 years, so I
wasn't sure what I would learn from "How to Avoid Going to Work
without Quitting your Job".
But Nicole writes with engaging honesty and humour from her own
experience, and I was unexpectedly delighted to discover a bunch of
tools and ideas which I'm already starting to use.
Much of what Nicole writes about applies equally to anyone wanting
to run their own business from home, so I strongly recommend it to
anyone thinking of making that change.
I especially like Nicole's practical suggestions for dealing with
the very real problem of isolation. I've recently seen examples where
people have not seen this as a potential pitfall, not planned for it,
and ultimately gone back to office working because they could not
handle it.
Great work, Nicole - a really useful book.

\"AFTER READING NICOLE'S BOOK ... I AM FAR BETTER PREPARED"
I very much enjoyed reading Nicole's book. Not only did I learn a
lot about telecommuting, I found the writing to be particularly
appealing (the substance is conveyed with a casual, conversational
flair).
I am an office-based worker, whose biggest concern about
telecommuting was the potential isolation from my colleagues and the
possible negative impact that situation could have on my career. After
reading Nicole's book (the chapter on "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" in
particular), I am confident that should I decide to telecommute in the
future, I am far better prepared to do so successfully and in a way
that will not harm my career.
This book is a recommended read.

\"AVOID SOME OF THE PITFALLS WORKING AT HOME CAN BRING"
I've recently started my own internet business working from home,
although I'm not a telecommuter, many of the issues are very relevant.
I've picked up some great tips through reading Nicole's book and will
definitely be putting them into practice to avoid some of the pitfalls
working at home can bring about, that I'd never considered, such as
how to maintain work/life balance.
If you're considering telecommuting, or working for yourself from
home, I'd strongly recommend picking up a copy of Nicole's book just
to make your life easier - why not get some advice from someone with
years of experience?

THIS ISN'T JUST A DREAM, IT'S YOUR DESTINY
This isn't a formula for just fulfilling a dream; this formula is
about fulfilling your destiny. The dream is part of it, but the
destiny is so much more, because your purpose isn't just about you.
Your family needs you. Your spouse and kids need you. They need your
time. They need your presence - both physical and mental. They need
you stress-free so you can focus on them when you're with them. And at
the same time, your boss and peers need you to do the very best job
you can at work. They depend on you - they can't succeed when they
need to work closely with you but you don't know how to do that from
home.
It is your duty, your responsibility, and for each moment that you
don't make this leap, you're impacting those who depend on you both at
home and at work. It is time to SHATTER THROUGH YOUR BARRIERS, no
matter how well you think you are doing at this moment, because there
is always the next level where you can be even better. Nobody on this
planet has maxed out what they can do, and as a leader and powerful
being, you NEED TO BE MORE, so you can do more.

\"IT COULD MAKE OR BREAK AN IMPORTANT BUSINESS MOVE"
This is a GREAT BOOK!!! Not only does it help people with options
of working from home, it also applies to the work place as well. There
are a lot of people who work at an office who don't have or don't use
properly, the skills you have outlined. Communication Etiquette!!!!
You have provided so much information that I have never thought of
and will now start to apply even though I work out of an office! You
came up with a lot of the trials I lived with when I had my office at
home and a lot more I never encountered.
The in's and out's of communication are so very important in
today's work force that some people don't realize what it means to
have EFFECTIVE communication. It could MAKE or BREAK an important
business move or even make a difference of GETTING that all-important
client.
I can't put into words how GREAT this book is! Thank you very much
