The teen years can be more painful than many people imagine. For bisexual or GLBTPQ (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, pansexual, or questioning) teens, it can be a traumatic and jarring experience when you face difficult questions and cannot find the support and answers that you need. This can lead to emotional, physical, and spiritual wrenching pain. It challenges our idenity and our place in this world. Survivors may experience a variety of feelings such as detachment from others, depression, anger, anxiety, guilt, and questioning that could take years to resolve.
Mission:
In the USA alone there are over 30,000 suicides annually. With rates so tragically high, the numbers of victims due to the everyday stress of discrimination is staggering. The purpose of this information is to provide young adults with the resources and survival skills that can provide support while trying to endure tremendous pain, and to point out solutions to problems that do not often get noticed or discussed. This frank, matter of fact book is written for teens and young adults who are questioning their sexual identity, questioning how to live in a heterocentric and sometimes hateful society, and for those who need guidance, reassurance, a reminder that they are not alone, and solutions to problems they face everyday.
This really happened to me. I felt so depressed and alone I didnt want to go on. After a friend from high school committed suicide I felt even worse. On a daily basis I heard hateful homophobic jokes from people at work and sometimes from my immediate friends and family who were either too ignorant to realize how many glbt's there are around them or dont care about hurting them. I felt like the anxiety was piling up and could not take much more. And being "out" or moving away was not an option at the time.
To make matters worse, I was a teenager in a highly stressful military job working twelve hour shifts. After gathering all my courage, I discreetly talked to some friends and a minister about my issues and no one was able to help me. That experience actually made me feel more isolated and alone. It really put a big damper on my once youthful optimism. After talking with an attorney, I learned more about what would happen if I were ever caught engaging in sexual activity under military law. I felt more anxious each week and it was getting worse. Relaxation techniques and exercise was not helping.
