My
name is Joan Foo Mahony. I was a successful jet-setting corporate
lawyer having worked for over 26 years in Japan, Hong Kong, USA,
and lived in the West much of my working life. My life was centered
on my demanding job, and I was always on the go, living life on
the fast lane. I traveled around the world, not only because my
job required for it, but just that - I love traveling! I've
always been a vivacious, active person - jumping head-on into
any activity that gives me an opportunity to enjoy life to the
fullest. My all time favorite sport activities have been ice-skating,
mountain climbing and sailing.
But
in 1992, when I was just 43, my world came crumbling down.
A doctor who was examining my broken wrist, the result of an ice
skating accident, told me a devastating news:
"You
have the bones of a 90-year-old!"
Puzzled
by what he meant, I asked him to elaborate. The doctor looked
at my x-ray and even thought I was lying about my age. He reiterated
that the x-rays and my bone density test showed that I had lost
40% of my bone mass, and at the rate my bones were thinning, I
would be bedridden before long.
I
was shocked by the diagnosis. Only then did I realize that
I have been suffering from chronic osteoporosis although I looked
absolutely fine on the outside. After many complicated tests,
x-rays, checkups, and visits from one hospital to another, the
doctors eventually found out that my bone loss was due to a
hormonal imbalance. No matter how much calcium I took orally,
my brain kept telling my blood that I did not have enough calcium.
Hence my blood would 'steal' calcium from my bones and expel through
my urine because it regarded it as unnecessary.
(By
the way, osteoporosis or brittle bone disease is a debilitating
bone disease where the deterioration of bone and its increasing
fragility result in fractures. Osteoporosis often affects women,
and Asian women have a higher risk because they tend to have smaller
bones).
My
sister, who is a medical doctor herself, called up every major
medical expert in the US and Europe for help, but all gave the
same standard answer. They all said that the disease couldn't
be cured because no matter how much calcium I took, my body
couldn't absorb it. One even said that:
"The
best-case scenario would be that you would end up in a wheelchair;
the worst that you'd die from complications."
I
have always been an active person. So when the doctors told
me to stop everything and lead 'a quiet life', it was the worst
prognosis for me. I started to walk slowly and even talk slowly.
It got so bad later that I couldn't even walk up stairs. I
gave up sports and dancing - activities that I enjoyed very much.
When you have osteoporosis, and in such a severe case like mine,
it takes a longer time to heal a simple broken bone. My broken
wrist was in plaster for almost a year.
I
can't live my life this way!

After more than a year, I got tired of leading a quiet life
as my doctors advised. I examined my treatment options with
my doctors and decided that Western medicines were not for me
due to its limitation. Weight bearing exercise helps to stop bone
deterioration but it does not build mass. The option of hormone
replacement therapy or HRT was a no-no for me since there is a
history of cancer in my family. I was at my wits' end and the
future certainly looked bleak.
Not
one to slow down, and tired of the sedentary life that I have
adopted, I soon packed my bags and flew from USA to Hong Kong
to visit my friends, and if possible to find an alternative cure
for my ailment. By chance or as fate would have it, one day
I accompanied a friend to a Qigong class conducted by Mak Chung
Man, a Chinese herbalist and Qigong master who is regarded as
one of the foremost authorities on both these traditional practices.
Meeting
Master
Mak Chung Man was the turning point that changed my life
forever.

I soon became a student of Master Mak's or more fondly known as
the 'man from the mountains', and decided to study the 3,000-year-old
ancient exercise under him. Not long after I started classes,
my husband was transferred from Boston to Hong Kong. So I was
able to see Master Mak everyday. Someone up there was certainly
watching over me. I had never met a master like Master Mak. He
taught me the basics and sent me off to do it myself. But I kept
going back to learn more from him and he never held back his knowledge.
Qigong reversed my condition...

After a year of practice, I went back to my American doctors
for tests. They were, as I expected, flabbergasted. Not only
had I arrested the disease, I managed to reverse it too. In my
humble opinion, I feel I had rebalanced my qi so my brain could
give my body the right messages and my bones had been able to
grow back. After three years of practicing Qigong, the signs
were even more positive - my bones did not deteriorate further,
and in fact, I found that my bones have strengthened.
Recent
tests showed my bone loss was only about 5 % instead of 40%.

When you are 55 years old, a bone loss of 5 to 10% is considered
normal. The US doctors cannot believe the reversal in my condition,
especially when I tell them it's due to Qigong.
Well,
that was 7 years ago. Today I am a picture of excellent health
and I am simply radiating with energy. Now I am back active again,
traveling, mountain climbing, sailing, and teaching Qigong for
free to children. I have since given up my corporate law practice
but am still active as a businesswoman, publisher and a writer.





As
I grew more familiar with Qigong, I started to adapt the
various exercises for use while I was out and about, developing
them to fit my busy lifestyle. I know all of us would

aside a couple of hours a day, which is what some masters
