Drunk driving paranoia in this country is so extreme, some are calling for a new era of prohibition!!! Not to say that people who are a genuine hazard should be driving, nobody wants their loved ones to be added to the statistics, but DUI/DWI has become a money-making RACKET for local governments, police departments, lawyers, and special interest groups.
Many police departments have officers whose ONLY job is to arrest people for DUI/DWI. Sometimes these officers aren’t even paid by the Department they work for, they are on special grants that are renewable based on statistics…meaning, these officers’ LIVELIHOODS depend on making DUI/DWI arrests. How’s THAT for motivation to turn YOUR glass of wine with a friend after a stressful workday into a 14-hour long nightmare of being arrested, processed, and eventually released…ONLY to realize that you can’t wake up for MONTHS because that was the EASY part!!
The officers’ DWI training manual states that “Unless there is a real risk of arrest, there will not be much fear of arrest. Law enforcement officers must arrest enough violators enough of the time to convince the general public that they will get caught, sooner or later.” That would be great if the officers ONLY targeted TRULY “impaired” drivers! However, these officers’ desire to meet quotas and put that “fear” into the “general public” is causing many of them to treat drivers who have had one or two drinks as if they are a menace to society.
Thank goodness for Attorneys who specialize in DUI/DWI, right? WRONG!!!! Sure, they know all the rules, but it’ll cost you $5,000 to $10,000 for their “help”.
