I know what it's like to sit at a red light praying it changes so you don't feel trapped.  I used to pass up on vacations and fun with family and friends because of the fear too.  I made up excuses and suffered embarassment and shame because of my fear of driving.

I take trips around the county, I drive out of state for work when I need to and actually look forward to the peace and quiet of the ride.  Traffic, highways, bridges, and  red lights are things I don't even notice anymore.  


If you suffer from a fear of driving, you’re not alone. Judy Chessa, coordinator of the Anxiety and Phobia Treatment Center at White Plains Hospital Center, says that in their facility the fear of driving is in the top 3 most common fears. Your driving phobia may have been caused by a traumatic event such as an accident, or may have no obvious roots.  You may fear having a panic attack and losing control while operating a vehicle or you may not feel secure when driving over bridges.  Perhaps you can drive close to home in your “comfort zone” or maybe you’re unable to sit in a car at all.  You may be uncomfortable driving or in sheer white knuckle panic. 



Tremendous advances in the science and understanding of curing phobias have been made in recent years.  Unfortunately, these proven techniques are rarely utilized for curing fear of driving.  Through my own experiences with the fear of driving,  I realized that  no self-help program addressed this fear sufficiently. Through years of research, reading, trial, and painful error, I learned cutting edge psychological techniques that don't just ease the fear of driving, but with practice, eliminate it completely.

Conquering your fear in the fastest, most efficient manner possible requires specialization.  We didn't design the program to help you with a fear of flying, spiders, or clowns (which would have allowed us to attract a much wider market like the other programs).  Those catch all programs were already out there when we needed help with our fears of driving, the problem is, those programs approach all fears the same way, with the same plan.  It just doesn't work.  The fear of driving is unique and need to be approached differently than a fear of public speaking or some other phobia.

What Caused Your Fear Of Driving?









People who have anxiety and phobias about driving are often afraid of the very fearful symptoms they experience.  They fear their own reaction to driving and have thoughts of losing control, dying, or going crazy.  They seem unable to cope with their anxiety and it can often spiral into a full blown panic attack.



Anxiety is defined as a multi-symptom response to a perceived threat or danger.  They key word to take note of is that the threat merely needs to be perceived, not necessarily real. Anxiety is a normal response that everyone feels, but when the fear escalates and is unfounded, it can become a panic attack, which is a sudden, intense period of fear and anxiety.  It is this potential escalation of fear, and what it represents to the driver, that causes the discomfort and makes the phobia so severe. 







Ending Panic Attacks and That Feeling of Unreality 

 

A panic attack is your body’s way of responding to your own anxiety.  It is self-created, and with the proper tools and training, able to be avoided.  Some common symptoms you may have when having a panic attack are:
 


Racing heart

Dizziness

Lightheadedness

Feelings of “unreality”

Fear of losing control

Scary, irrational thoughts

Upset stomach

Tightness in the chest and throat

Fear of being unable to breathe

Numbness or tingling




It is important to remember that while you are in a panic attack you are in no physical or psychological danger.   You are simply reacting to a perceived danger and since the threat is not real, your fears are turned inwards.  You will not die from a panic attack or anxiety, you will not go crazy or lose control, and it will end.  Once you're taught the mechanism of panic and anxiety and truly understand how it works, your fear of your own feelings will diminish with your newfound knowledge.  It's just like turning the light on the bogeyman.  

 

Of Course You Need To Relax, But How???

 

Other programs you may have purchased not designed specifically for the fear of driving have probably instructed you to lie down, close your eyes, and do relaxation exercsies when you're feeling anxious.  That's great, but you can't very well lie down on the side of the road and take time to calm down when you're driving.  What the 'catch all' anxiety or panic programs suggest simply don't work for your issue and leave you more frusturated then before.

Control Your Anxiety With Diaphragmatic Breathing

 





One of the oldest techniques for coping with a panic attack is controlled, diaphragmatic breathing.  Improper breathing can contribute to several symptoms of anxiety, so it is certainly something worth understanding and practicing.  

1)  Place one hand on your navel, and the other on your chest, right over the breastbone. We're going to use your hands will tell you what  muscles you are using to breathe.

2)  Exhale completely. Drop your shoulders and relax your muscles as you do so, pay particular attention to the muscles of your face and upper body.

3)  Pause for three seconds.

4) Inhale SLOWLY through your nose by pushing your stomach out, not your chest.  Visualize yourself breathing in and out through your navel.  Your chest hand should stay relatively stationary, while your lower hand rises and falls.  

This is basic diaphragmatic breathing and it certainly can help calm you down when you're experiencing anxiety. Through thorough practice, you can even teach your body to breathe from the diaphragm all the time.  There are also more advanced and powerful breathing techniques that can be learned.  

Although proper breathing is a component of coping with anxiety and panic, the problem with it is that it isn't near powerful enough to abort a panic attack. More advanced strategies are needed to eliminate panic and sever phobic reactions.  If you are simply a bit uncomfortable in high traffic, learning to perform the breathing as outlined may be helpful, but if you have bothersome anxiety or panic reactions, more skills need to be enlisted.

Stopping Irrational, Scary Thoughts















When under high anxiety or panic, fearful drivers often have scary thoughts about losing control, going crazy, or other scary or embarrassing situations. Although you won't act on these thoughts, and they're not dangerous, they do add to your fear and must be dealt with to prevent you from entering a panic attack on the road.  Ironically, attempts to suppress these thoughts only result in MORE of them.  If I were to tell you not to think of a blue banana, what is the first thing your brain does?  It has to think of what it's not supposed to think of!  It's easy to see that traditional thought stopping strategies are flawed and these thoughts must be handled differently.  Luckily, there ARE ways to do away with these persistent thoughts, and the technique presented in the program may surprise you!










The Key To Ending Your Fear










Virtually all programs advise that the suffer "accept" their fear.  That may be very easy and obvious for a therapist to say, but unless you've struggles with anxiety it's impossible to imagine how difficult that is.  I understand the panic and anxiety you're feeling, I've been there.  I was told countless times to accept my fear, and it irritated me every time.  What I was never told, and had to learn on my own, was HOW to accept my fear.  Now that I know how I can go about acceptance, I can not only use it keep myself free from constant anxiety, but I can teach it to others.

More general programs that claim to assist with anxieties and phobias abound, but a one size fits all approach is not what’s needed, particularly with the fear of driving which has unique treatment considerations.



Unlike the fear of flying, or clowns, or spiders, or whatever other fear the “catch-all” plans try to help with, the fear of driving must be approached differently due to the nature of the activity.  While driving, there is a limitation to how relaxed an individual should or can be, while still maintaining safety and control of the vehicle.  The types of relaxation techniques and progressive muscle relaxation typically advised by programs or resources on anxiety are impractical if not impossible while driving.



Additionally, there is a certain level of commitment that must be accepted and planned for by the individual looking to gain comfort while driving.  In many phobias, there are very small steps that can be taken in the recovery process to systematically expose the sufferer to the feared situation.  Although that is still possible to a certain degree with the fear of driving, there is a level of inescapability that must be considered in program design.  There can be gradual exposure to a degree, but once the more problematic levels are encountered such as highway driving or bridge crossings, once begun they are very difficult if not often impossible to retreat from.  Once the individual turns onto the highway, they are committed to at least driving the next exit.  Once the exit is passed prior to a bridge, there is often no way to exit the situation except by driving over the feared bridge.  A program that focuses on the fear of driving exclusively should consider this and include an appropriate cognitive component to its treatment approach. 



Driving is a very common fear, but one that is seldom addressed specifically and is poorly suited for a general self-help phobia, anxiety, or panic treatment.  It is surmised that the relative small demographic afflicted by this condition makes it less attractive and profitable to be catered to by larger publishers who aim to capture the largest audience possible with plans that can be used for wide array of fears.  Many of the techniques, strategies, and advice found in available programs can simply not be extended to this fear due to its exclusive needs discussed previously.
