nothing that works.
It’s all one glossy cover after another with no real beef to it.
You wanted 5-star dining, but instead you got Taco Bell.
THEIR books are no good you decide, so you went to see a teacher
instead. The way supposedly “everyone” learns.
You arrive and he gives his best performance. He starts telling you
about how many students he has, that he’s read everything, and that
the first thing he drooled on was his guitar.
You meet some of his students, but strangely they’re all beginners
too. What’s up with this? Some are just learning a C chord while
maybe a few others can play a full scale! After a year of learning
from this guy, they’re STILL beginners.
Meanwhile the teacher wants to show you how he can play classical
symphonies backwards, with his teeth, and no hands! Good God, does he
really want to teach you? Or he does he want another fan?
In between discussions about his “killer” band you realize that
he DOES just want another fan. NO GOOD! You’re out of there as
quickly as you got that burrito from Taco Bell.
You’re back at home now. You decide to check the Internet for
someone who might help. Anyone. So you bravely search for “guitar
lessons” on Google.
I did that too, and it’s _really_ scary because of all the options
you’re bombarded with. Tons of YouTube guitar players who are also
showing off, one free chord lesson after another, and guitar forums
filled with self-righteous douche bags with no patience for a beginner
like yourself.
Then there’s the subscription service websites. They not only offer
to give you the moon, but planets that don’t even exist yet! They
have a long, long list of features about their expert instructors and
lessons all enhanced by a sleek web design and sleazy marketing.
But then there’s the prices, which unfortunately are just like our
wacky instructor’s. Some want you to commit for a year for to their
service, maybe for a cheaper rate, but you have to login to use their
stuff. Lots of these services will differ, but ultimately you have
to DEPEND ON THEM TO LEARN.

However, and like I said just now, you can’t do that alone. Even I
couldn’t which is why I searched HARD, and I mean really hard for
the advice, techniques, and tips that were going to work.
But I did learn despite every setback, lousy tip, bad habit, and
seemingly impossible riff that I came upon. AND I’M HERE TO GIVE

(As some of you might know) Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett, and Les Claypool,
who all have amazing careers now.
THE THING IS THAT THE LESSONS DON’T WORK. SATRIANI HAD TO GO TO THE
SOURCE TO LEARN BY HIMSELF, AND THAT’S ULTIMATELY WHAT I’M GOING

Also there’s the chance you’ve already done hard things in your
life. Have you learned to drive safely? Get into college? Perform
difficult work for an employer? Basically, have you overcome any
challenge that you once thought was hard?
Learning guitar requires that same determination to learn.
