HOW to BUILD VOCABULARY and IMPROVE SPELLING ABILITY

Used successfully in homes and in schools since 1995

Hello and Welcome,

Have you ever heard children and adults with an excellent command of words and wish you and your family could be like them?

Do you believe that it is possible for you and your family to increase vocabulary and improve spelling ability, and become the family others admire?

Are you worried about the growing influence of texting amongst children and teenagers and the drop in communication standards, vocabulary and spelling skills?

If you answered yes to any of these questions you are in the right place.

Hi, my name in Gus Cahill and you may be feeling the way I felt a few years ago. My wife and I were looking for materials and books to help our children to build vocabulary and improve spelling ability. Most approaches were based on rote learning and the words were soon forgotten, as such approaches did not develop what we have come to call word awareness.

Through trial and error, and long months of testing different approaches with our children, we eventually arrived at the format outlined in our ebooks – Building Word  Awareness. Over the years, our children (now adults) helped to develop and update the process. So our ebooks are based on years of experimenting with different ways to encourage children, teenagers and adults to develop an enthusiasm and love for words and increase vocabulary.

We believe that our approach, through the different levels presented, offers an opportunity for all children, teenagers and adults to engage and participate in building vocabulary and improving spelling abiliity in a fun and entertaining way.

Try to guess this word from the four pieces of information supplied:

Verb              9 letters       first letter is i

to disturb; to break in on

______________________________________

No, the answer is not intrude – the word has 9 letters! – not Intruder - the word is a verb not a noun -

 the mental search intensifies !!!!!!!

Answer is ………

The information given allows for mental searches within parameters that children, teenagers and adults feel are within their range. It is also a very good brain training exercise.

Each page in the ebooks has five words.

It is difficult to put age limits on the different levels as there is such diversity out there with regard to vocabulary and spelling ability. Children, teenagers and adults should be matched to the level that meets their current abilities and the next levels should be used to encourage expansion of their vocabulary over time.

Using the ebook

In the home

As a family game, or with friends and relations, children and adults can combine to form teams. Each team can be tested on words from different levels based on the abilities of the team members. One point is given when the word is guessed correctly and one point when the correct spelling is known. First to reach 12 points wins the round.

Parents are amazed that all family members participate:

'The different levels allow my son (9 years) and my daughter (14 years) to share in the fun and enjoy the challenges.
My husband and I love the challenges in Book 2.' - Valerie, London.
'As a family we turn the TV off for 30 minutes most nights and use the ebooks. Our kids engage and participate immediately and we give them plenty of hints and clues – great family fun'. – Yvonne, Boston

In the car

Bring the wordbook to test the children and help to pass the journey in a constructive and entertaining way.

In schools

Having used the word sheets in the classroom, teachers commented as follows:

‘The pupils loved it and found themselves learning and increasing their vocabulary effortlessly. It affords them an opportunity to attempt the spelling of familiar and unfamiliar words'. - Orla, Ireland.

Some teachers introduce one page of words per day and periodically test individuals or form teams to compete against each other. Pages can be photocopied for pupils or information read out, or if available, put the page up on a whiteboard.

Pupils should be encouraged to consult a dictionary to check if their proposed answer is correct.

Team work will introduce a competitive edge to the process and motivate the pupils to participate in group learning activities.

‘The competitive aspect encourages the children to test each other and it motivates them to pay closer attention to what they learn.’  - Orla, Ireland.

Remember, lots of encouragement is essential so pick the correct level for the children, teenagers and adults involved. As they score success on their first levels they will feel more confident in meeting the challenges of the next level.

'I use Levels 1 and 2 of Book 1 with teenagers with mild learning difficulties. I find it a great resource and they really enjoy the sessions. It immediately captures and holds their attention. The team format contributes to the development of their social skills.' - Jennifer, Ireland.

Now that you have their attention, use the words as a platform to discuss different aspects of vocabulary. There are numerous ways to use the words to have interesting discussions.

‘They learned new vocabulary and spellings without even realizing it.’ - Rosemary,Ireland.

‘Ideal for quick vocabulary work. It caters for all abilities and fosters co-operation within the group.' - Mairead, Ireland.

The four steps in the Building Word Awareness process are:

1.   Description of the word outlining the part of speech – noun, adjective and so on. This introduces the different parts of speech and assists in developing the use of words in their proper context.

2.   Giving the first letter, and how many letters the word contains, helps to focus the mental search to within a specific  range. This sets parameters and facilitates recall of other words - good brain training for all ages.

3.   The meaning of the word is given and, in this part of the process, wordpower is increased and a deeper understanding of words is developed as a lot of other words are examined and recalled from memory. These 3 steps build word awareness and allow for a considered answer to be attempted.

4.   The spelling of the word is the final step. This encourages a questioning approach to the correct spelling of words. Knowing how many letters in the word assist in getting the spelling right. Overall spelling ability is improved.

Our ebooks are not meant to be a substitute for a dictionary, as they do not go into the depth and variations of word meanings found in a dictionary. Rather the ebooks should be used to foster an awareness of words, and an encouragement to use the dictionary more often to check for correct definitions and spellings.

Good Luck and Best Wishes,
