Okay, before that cynical voice in your head starts ringing the

little about myself and why I decided to write this book.
Firstly, I truly, absolutely believe in this technique. Not only
have I used it many times myself, I have also treated many pregnant
mothers and have found the results to be immediate and amazing.
I first came across the Bowen Technique as a medical student. Coming
from a very scientific background, I was extremely skeptical about
this technique. I was persuaded to attend an introductory session by a
close friend who had tried the Bowen Technique for sciatic pain and
had been raving about the results ever since.
Needless to say, after my first session I was hooked. I had never
before experienced such a gentle treatment that did so much yet felt
like so little. The less is more rule definitely applies to Bowen.
After qualifying as a Bowen practitioner and treating patients
during my medical training as well as privately, I was even more
convinced of the benefits of this therapy. I could elaborate on this
for ages but what really amazed me is the simplicity and gentleness of
the moves involved.
Although the treatment of the entire body does require some
dedication to learning and experience, there are some very simple
moves that can be used to treat specific conditions. I felt my
patients would really benefit from learning these little moves and
treating themselves when necessary.
I began teaching patients and their spouses these subtle, gentle
moves that they could use to treat themselves and each other. I then
started putting together leaflets as a step-by- step guide to help
them remember the moves. The results were incredibly positive and
satisfying.
Apart from a huge improvement in many chronic illnesses, there was a
positive change in outlook. They felt empowered to be able to control
their ailments as well as to help others by using the techniques they
had learnt. Many have since gone on to take the full Bowen course and
become practitioners.
This is what inspired me to write this book. So many pregnant
mothers are going through the aches and pains of pregnancy without any
access to a Bowen practitioner or help of any other kind.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Simply stated, the Bowen Technique resets the body to heal itself.
It consists of a series of gentle moves, usually with just the thumb
and finger, across muscles or tendons in a very gentle rolling motion.
Most of the work can be performed through light clothing; however, it
is easier to work directly on skin.
Bowen is ideal for expecting mothers as the patient can be
positioned lying on their side or sitting in a chair.
The Bowen moves are made on specific parts of the body, such as
across muscle on either side of the spine, that triggers the body’s
natural responses to heal itself. It is non-invasive, and so gentle
that it is hard to believe anything is happening. It is NOT massage or
manipulation.
Bowen works by unlocking the body’s ability to heal itself, which
may be hampered due to long-standing injury or an imbalance in the
nervous system.
The Bowen move calls for a response mechanism by the body. The moves
aren't painful and so the defense mechanism isn't called for. The body
is stimulated to look for an appropriate response. In the process of
looking, signals are sent out by the nervous system to all areas of
the body. These signals cause an increase in blood flow to different
areas of the body and an overall resetting of the body to correct any
imbalances. This is like pressing the reboot button on your computer!
Bowen acts to rebalance the nervous system. In short, most of us
have an overactive fight or flight response (sympathetic nervous
system) that keeps us in a state of tension and anxiety. By
re-balancing both the sympathetic and parasympathetic arms of your
nervous system you will feel the immediate effects of calmness and
serenity. The other effects which may not be so obvious is an increase
in bowel activity (rumbling tummy) and bowel motion.
IS IT SAFE?
The Bowen Technique is a very gentle and safe therapy that is even
used to treat newborn babies, the elderly and the very ill.
There are no negative side effects by using Bowen. However, we do
advise you to take some precautions as with all forms of healing
therapies.
If you are in your first trimester, I would advise you to wait
before carrying out any forms of alternative therapies. During this
period, the body is undergoing a lot of change and has to adapt very
quickly to surging hormones and physical changes. It is best to not to
bombard the body with any forms of treatment during this time.
My aim is to provide you or your spouse/partner/friend with a tool
to relieve your pain and make your pregnancy a happy comfortable one.
