An old-time smith of 39 years has decided to give back to the community by making some of the observations and insights he has found during his career available.  His name is John Emsley and here are just a few of his experiences:
Interviewed for TV appearances Taught Farriery for Georgian College Of Owen Sound over 25 years ago Specially Commissioned to Blacksmith at Large Events (Region 18 Arab Championships, Canadian Carriage Driving Classic, etc..) Fielded Questions and Held Clinics at Numerous Events Competed Successfully in Many Different Riding Disciplines Full Time Farrier Since 1969
As a horse owner,  we all want to know true, sound principles for keeping our horses lives healthy, long and enjoyable.  John saw the need for relevant information addressing specifc issues that he or a fellow horse owner had.  Being a farrier and educator, John has developed a way of cutting to the root of the problem and addressing the question specificly without confusing the issue.

Over the years, John has taken note of many questions and through the experience of caring for 10s of thousands of hooves, keeping in the mind the greater good of overall equine health and well-being wrote many an insight into the horse industry.  As far back as 1975 - John wrote a guide named "What is Good Shoeing?", and continued to write for several newspapers and magazine publications across the Canadian landscape.

Currently John has brought his "What is Good Horse Shoeing" book into the year 2008 - fully revising for clarity, updating in knowledge, and electonically digitizing.  It is now available to you online right here and only here.  But more on that in one second.  As well, John has agreed to give freely his body of work entitled "Horse Tales" to the equine community.  This is a work centering on insights and observations from a professional farriers perspective.  There are gems in here that every horse owner should read about and he's agreed to give it to you completely free of charge!

If you do nothing else, at least pick up Horse Tales, it's absolutely free of charge, simply enter your first name and email address in the form below and you should get your first issue right away.  Check your inbox every week thereafter for another issue.  This will definitely boost your horse sense!

Now John has developed a guide to proper horse shoeing for the horse owner.  It's called "What is Good Horse Shoeing?" and addresses this issue in a fantastic way.  Through the answering of questions that are directly related to the original question, John provides the horse owner with the knowledge and tools needed to properly assess their horse's shoe settings.  As was previously stated, this book is completely updated, revised and digitized as of February 16, 2008.  These are core principals that all horse shoeing may be analyzed by - in simple, easy to understand terms.

To quote the front page "Written especially for horse owners in layman's language."  This is entirely true.  John has constantly fielded a barrage of questions regarding his profession as a farrier.  From educating horse owner's in the proper care of their horses in clinics, public events and general barn talk, to educating farriers that take up this profession, John has constantly made the process of explaining this art called farriery simple and straight to the point.

In an unprecedented attempt at explaining to you, the horse owner what good horse shoeing should look like - John covers 15 key topics in this book that a horse owner should know when assessing a horseshoeing setting.  Additionally he has created a Shoeing Check List for horse owners to print out and take to the barn for reference when looking at a  particular shoeing job.  On top of that he provides you with a Shoeing Record - a printable  document used to keep track of the care of your horses hooves.

John at one time, also held the positions of art director for Reader's Digest, Grand & Toy and C.E.B. Limited.  What is Good Horse Shoeing is fully illustrated and all artwork including the covers and shoeing record are done by John Emsley himself.  This product can be found nowhere else and is one of a kind.  This is a limited edition of a very unique and personalized tool for helping the horse owner better understand proper horse hoof care.

A word from Josh Emsley, full time farrier, son of John Emsley:
Proper Horseshoeing is not an option for your horse, it is a necessity.  The actual skill of critically analyzing your horses shoeing is not to be taken lightly.  There are a vast number of misconceptions in the horse industry and it is simply a struggle for you the horse owner to actually find the information you need to make an educated assessment of the work being done on your horse.
There are many people who have owned a horse for years and still dont even have an idea what the proper angles are for their horses hooves to be at.  This is just one example of many - where the topic is widely discussed with a lot of fudging on the details, creating a glossing over of the true concrete foundation principles that are out there for anyone to learn of, but simply not in a manner that is appropriate to the horse owner.

This is not the case with this literature.  This is what I recommend to my clients when they are looking for more answers in regards to assessing the   proper horseshoeing of their horse.  I am a full time farrier and I've been brought up on this stuff.  This is what I do - simply because I love doing it -   and this is what I recommend for you.  Use this literature and boost your horse sense, learn the important foundation principles and you'll have done the groundwork for a strong body of equine knowledge that will keep your horse healthy and alive a lot longer than if you didn't realize you were providing poor horseshoeing for your 4-legged friend.

I started out young, and as such have been blessed with a wide range of experience at the farrier profession.  With this blessing, also comes the burden of witnessing many, at times, disturbing situations.  These situations invariably result in a horses early demise due to ignorance of the core principals of this book.  If only the owner (not to mention the farrier)had known of these principals, the outcome would have been completely different.

"What is Good Horse Shoeing?" will give you, the horse owner the basic knowledge to analyze your horse's shoe settings and alleviate the heartbreak of improper shoeing.  I myself as a farrier require heavy duty footwear and would suffer to try the job in dress shoes.  Everyone needs appropriate footwear.  The same applies to our equine friends and to those of you who are going to buy this book and use it for your horses health, I congratulate you on a wise decision to empower yourself with the horse sense to provide the kind of care your horse will thank you for.

Here's a list of the topics that are covered in "What is Good Shoeing?":
How long it takes to become capable of good horse shoeing What to look for in a properly trimmed hoof for shoes or without shoes How much should be trimmed off your horses hooves What the proper angle is for your horses hooves What the difference between hot and cold shoeing is An explanation of what good nailing is when applying a horseshoe to the hoof An answer to the question of the cause of "corns" What kind of traction is good for your horse Why a shoe is lost A discussion on the benefits of "corrective" shoeing How much rasping is too much How to know if your horse has been lamed through a misplaced nail An answer to the question of hoof expansion Explanation of handling for a farrier session
The benefits of owning this guide are numerous to you the horse owner.  The ability to reference this source at any time will allow you to judge every shoeing job you have done on your horse.  Print out the shoeing check list, laminate it and post it on your barn wall.  Take the printable shoeing record and use it to ensure you have a healthy schedule for your horses hoof care maitenance.   Read the book at your leisure and make sure to keep learning about your equine friend's health, for his or her sake.  Here's a few things to think over if your unsure you want to buy this book:
