UNDER THE KNIFE

THE INSIDE TRUTH ABOUT WEIGHT LOSS AND WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY;
A SURGEON'S PERSPECTIVE

ARE YOU TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT, AND NOT HAVING MUCH SUCCESS?  HAVE YOU CONSIDERED GOING THROUGH WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY, BUT ARE UNSURE WHAT THAT STEP ENTAILS?

"UNDER THE KNIFE" IS A BOOK WRITTEN BY A BOARD CERTIFIED SURGEON THAT EXPLAINS YOUR OPTIONS, WHETHER YOU CHOOSE A CONSERVATIVE PATH OR SURGICAL INTERVENTION FOR TREATMENT OF YOUR WEIGHT ISSUES.

Before you go under the knife for a weight loss procedure such as gastric bypass or Lap band surgery, you need to consider the following statistics.  Between 1 and 4 out of 200 people who have bariatric surgery will die as a result of the procedure within 30 days.  On the other hand, an overweight or obese individual who does not lose weight has a 3-7 year decreased life expectancy as compared to a person of the same age who is of normal weight.  Clearly, if you are overweight or obese, you owe it to yourself and your family to change your current situation.  There are 2 viable options to achieve this change.  The first conservative path is to lose weight with medical management, exercising, and changing your dietary habits.  The second path if you genuinely feel that you have failed a conservative treatment plan is to have bariatric surgery. My goal is to detail for you the way to reach your healthy weight safely, whether you choose conservative management or surgery.

I am a surgeon in a large metropolitan area in the United States, one of the capital cities for bariatric procedures.  I have been blessed with a busy surgical practice for over 14 years, and I am board certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery as well as Vascular Surgery. It is my impression that patients do not fully understand how they became overweight or obese.  Weight gain is more than just overeating and not exercising enough.  It is a lifestyle change that needs to be addressed, and there are no surgical procedures to alter lifestyle.  It also takes more than a fad diet to reverse years of weight gain.  The propensity to put on weight is not a new equation or phenomenon.  Rather, it is a manifestation of changes in social habits and norms.  There are also numerous medical conditions that have to be tested for that can cause unexplained weight gain.  Metabolic factors (hormonal, aging, etc.) that influence body weight and composition need to be assessed.  Some of these factors might not be under your control.

If you are considering surgery, please remember that bariatric procedures serve only to decrease the amount one can eat or absorb through the intestinal tract.  Many people who have weight loss surgery still do not lose weight because they are able to
