Well, like many women, I’ve had a lifelong struggle with weight – making a couple of good choices, and more often some bad ones along the way. In fact, it took me over 10 complicated years to discover what I want to share with you today, THE solution to the troubles and problems I am determined to help you avoid, so you can stop being frustrated and get your body back in only a matter of weeks.

My Story: How I Went From “Freshman 30” to Fit Yummy Mummy

Growing up, I was always that skinny girl in high school. I was lucky and could wear and eat whatever I wanted...until college. Then I was exposed to late nights with friends and eating more pizza than my body could handle.

And get this. I was a real “overachiever” in college. Not only did I easily gain the "freshman 15", I actually ballooned up over 30 pounds in just 1 year! Finally, in my sophomore year as I registered for school, I came across what I thought would be the solution...

Aerobics classes!

You remember those. Ugh, I hated them, but hey they counted toward my credit hours so I had to go. I practically starved myself with a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet (another mistake!) after those hour-long classes (that only a college girl could have time for), but hey, it gave me the quick fix. However, the harsh reality was the "marathon cardio lifestyle" really just led me to adopt some unhealthy habits to maintain my "thin, but soft body".

The only reason I had enough energy to get through the day was because I was so young. There’s just no way a Mom can live on cardio and low-calorie diets and still expect to take care of a family. Back then, I had so much more to learn about proper nutrition and exercise, and living a healthy lifestyle.

One of the biggest mistakes I made prior to becoming pregnant was basing my identity around a number on the scale, doing whatever I could to keep that number at or below my so-called “target weight”. I know some of you are thinking…Hey, I do the same thing…well looking back, I will tell you right now, that’s the wrong way of living!

In fact, I wasn’t healthy or fit at all, despite my “aerobics addiction”. I was just a skinny fat person. But as Dr. Phil tells us, “Even the most destructive behaviors have a payoff attached”. Living that lifestyle taught me some painful lessons. I knew I had to change, so after one semester I dropped the aerobics classes and continued my hunt for the right way to lose fat.

But Wait, I Still Have Something Embarrassing to Admit…

After college, I was accepted into a graduate program for elementary education. Yet outside of a Yoga class I attended as part of my Masters Degree, I did no exercise what so ever. Nothing. I know, it’s embarrassing, and something I regret. But it was all part of a difficult learning process that I had to go through in order to understand what works and what doesn’t for building a healthy, lean body.

At the time, I was still caught up in a cycle of NOT eating, drinking loads of caffeine, and using a destructive variety of diet and energy pills to help me maintain my “target weight”. I hated those pills and how they made me feel. They were just glorified caffeine pills, like Red Bull in a pill. And you don’t have to be a Doctor to know that’s not healthy, but I had no clue how to muster up more energy. I really thought I needed them to make it through the day.

Later, I learned I didn’t need them at all, and in fact, they were probably destroying my normal fat burning metabolism – making weight loss even harder and seemingly impossible! I learned so many lessons the hard way, but that’s okay, because now you don’t have to make the same mistakes I did.

The Miracle that Changed My Life…

One night, it finally came up, the topic of "Let's have a baby". This was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. Despite all of my diet and exercise mistakes, pregnancy turned out to be a life changing event that would help me reclaim my body and my health. 

How? Well first, I had no choice but to end all the bad habits I had lived with for so long in order to provide a healthy body for my baby. I gave up pills, caffeine, and dieting, and even started eating breakfast and making better food choices long before even trying to get pregnant, helping me add a healthy ten pounds.

But my careless lifestyle habits had completely destroyed my metabolism, causing my pregnancy weight gain to escalate dramatically as I entered my second trimester. Then finally…

The Ultimate Embarrassment: My Doctor Asked Me to “Slow Down” on the Weight Gain!

About 5 months into my pregnancy, I was gaining weight pretty quickly; in fact, I was blowing up like a balloon! And it gets worse….my doctor had to tell me to slow down! Talk about a blow to my already fragile self-esteem. I practically slinked out of the office that day, half-holding back tears, and half-angry at myself for all those years I had treated myself so poorly.

I despised EVERY picture that was taken of me when I was pregnant, and by my 6th month I could no longer even recognize my own face. It was a nightmare. In photos, I would hide my face and try to keep my exposure to my belly only. I did everything to avoid the embarrassment of associating myself with that weight gain.

A month into my third trimester, my life took another dramatic turn as we moved halfway across the country to Boston, MA. Fortunately, this was for the better, as we sold our cars and were forced to use public transportation – or walk – so we walked, A LOT!

But Guess How Much Weight I Gained During My Pregnancy...

When it was all said and done I had gained a massive 50 pounds after 9 months.

Talk about DEVASTATING!

But of course, as you know, any shame, fear, worry or heartbreak of losing your old body is quickly overcome by the immense joy of your baby. And I doted over Tyler from the moment he was born to this very day.

After Tyler was born, I was told I would lose a lot of weight simply from breastfeeding – and I did, shedding 17 pounds in the first 2 months, before the weight loss came to a screeching halt. While I still needed to lose a good 20 pounds more, I was just happy to have lost some weight.

In fact, I was initially overjoyed just to be able to wear REAL jeans again, rather than oversized, stretchy maternity “slacks”. But that joy quickly faded, when I realized the jeans were still bigger than what I was wearing after gaining the Freshman 30!

So I Searched and Searched and Searched for the Solution…

I needed to do something fast, so I tried a few diets and a few exercise programs. But they didn’t get me anywhere, and frankly, I didn’t have an hour everyday to be on the Stairmaster. That type of program just doesn’t fit into a busy Mom’s lifestyle.

Finally I just started walking again, with Tyler strapped to me or snug in his stroller. If you know Boston, you know it’s full of hills and valleys. So we walked up the slopes and down the hills, and we did periods of fast walking alternating with slow walking. And I noticed these short burst workouts really worked. It just clicked in my mind that I didn’t have to do hours and hours of long, slow cardio each week if I just picked up the intensity a bit.

The short bursts of activity fit into my lifestyle because it was something I HAD to do in order to run my errands and get around town. My weight dropped again and I lost another 14 pounds in 8 weeks. It’s not like I had time for marathon cardio workouts anyways. After all, not only was I taking care of Tyler, but for the first 3 years of his life I was a full-time nanny!

This type of short, burst exercise became a way of life for me and it’s the only type of fitness that is lifestyle friendly for a Mom. You know, I’m amazed by the Moms that do hours and hours of cardio, and wonder what they are sacrificing from their families and themselves just to fit in those workouts. I know I barely had any time to spare, even with my short, but effective workouts.

But There Was Still One Piece of the Puzzle Missing…

Boston turns nasty in the winter, so somehow I had to figure out how to get this type of burst training done inside, in the comfort of my own home. I wanted to keep losing fat all winter – rather than putting it back on like so many Mom’s who get busy over the Holiday Season.

I also tried some Yoga routines and found that it consumed way too much time and try to find child care. It was too much to travel (which meant I was walking), do an hour-long class, and then get back to the hustle and bustle of my family routine. So instead, I stuck with what worked – short burst exercise that didn’t require a trip to the gym. In fact, I was always finished in less time than it would take to get to the gym and back – let alone do a workout there! So I stuck to my short burst workouts and began reading up on how to eat to burn more fat.

Unfortunately, at this point my weight loss stalled – I had reached the dreaded fat loss plateau where it felt like no matter what I did, my body wasn’t giving another inch. So while my program was consistent, it still lacked that extra “something” to allow me to take my body, health, and fitness to another level.

I was on the verge of giving up. And for a while, I even talked myself into the fact that I should just be happy as is, after all, I just had a baby, so why not cut myself some slack? If that’s the price I had to pay for my son, then that was fine with me.

Still there I was, with a healthy baby boy, a busy life (like all moms), and stuck with a figure that you could only describe as soft – maybe even undesirable – which is the last thing any woman wants to hear.

When One Door Closes, Another Door Opens…

While the struggle to lose belly fat was difficult, there was something even worse going on in my life – And the fact was things just weren’t working out at home. Alas, it was time to end that chapter of my life, pick up and move on.

So I headed back to Kentucky, where fortunately, I was blessed as I met someone new, an amazing man who brought a whole new world of possibilities to my life, and at the same time, I also found the missing piece to the fat loss puzzle.

I discovered how to do short, fast, effective resistance training workouts. But I don’t mean bodybuilder “bulking-up” type routines or a routine that required fancy, expensive machines. Instead, I learned about no-bulking circuit training workouts you could do in the comfort of your own home – all you needed was your bodyweight, a bench, some dumbells, and those fun exercise balls – and you only needed 15 minutes!

I was instantly hooked and LOVED the new found energy. Plus, it zapped away the daily stress and melted the belly fat like nothing else I’d ever tried, allowing my body to take on a whole new shape! I can even remember the exact day I noticed my new figure – it was Tyler’s Birthday. I was lifting him up to blow out the candles on his cake, and not only was it nearly effortless, but the definition in my arms made my sister exclaim with a hint of sibling jealousy, “Check out those sexy arms!”

Goodbye Jelly-Belly, It Was NOT-So-Nice to Know You…

Everything I always dreamed of having in my life and for my son was finally starting to come together for me. The perfect home, a loving family, and a body I could feel confident in. All from an exercise regimen that was fast, fun and effective, and knowing the right food choices to make for best results. I had also finally figured out how to eat properly while on the go. A lot of women almost never have the courage to go the gym and get started. The tight, skimpy outfits worn by the young girls, the sweaty, grimy equipment, the creepy old men, and the loud, obnoxious teenagers are often too much to take – it makes a LOT of women afraid of the gym.

That’s why I work with so many Moms at home with short, fast, effective fat burning workouts that don’t require a 20-minute, time-wasting, round-trip to the gym and back. I’ve spent years studying bodyweight training experts to identify the best moves that you can do in your house with the bare minimum of equipment – all while still boosting your metabolism and toning your arms.

A bench, a fun exercise ball, and some dumbbells are all you need to get started – things you’ve probably collected over the years in earlier attempts to get fit.
