It all began innocently... over a quiet cup of tea with Tim Tam biscuits and two friends catching up on life events and pouring over nothing other than a fabulous stack of Quilting magazines.
Chocolate, Tea, a Good Friend and Quilts to Look At....what could be better?
BUT
Yes, I can admit it.
I got annoyed. I mean really annoyed.
The type where I ended up expressing my irritation quite energetically, as I flipped the pages of my magazine.
Imagine a six-year old rolling their eyes, hufffing and puffing about not being able to wear the latest fashion trend.
I was feeling so inspired and uplifted by the beautiful Quilts displayed on the pages of the magazine I was studying and learning about techniques used to make fabric masterpieces.
In reality, my friend Sandra and I were 'oohhing' and 'aahhing' over the delicious eye candy of Quilts, like giddy school girls and showing each other neat ways of piecing or great block designs we had found.
Things were going well.
Until....
I turned the page and saw it.... !
It was a double page colorful spread advertisement for Quilting Workshops and Quilting Classes With Famous International Quilting Experts.
I read out a paragraph to Sandra ....
"A week filled with a community of Quilters sharing their Quilts, stories, ideas, patterns, fabric choices and basking in the joy that only Quilting can bring..."
I was not happy.
Grumpy is more like what I would describe.
A frown only my closest friends would ever want to encounter crossed over my face.
Now, you ask...
Why did that make me so upset?
I was jealous. Plain and simple.
You see, if you are like me, and have longed to attend large Quilting Workshops and mix with Famous Quilters
you'll know what I mean...
For years I have been fascinated by these incredible fabric artists, and for as long as I can remember have wanted to meet them in person...
To hear their voice, laughter and learn about their quilting journey.
But as you can gather, I never have.
Why?
Believe me, it has not been from a lack of desire.
To be honest? - Time, money and travel really.
I live in Australia and most of the large Quilting exhibitions are held in USA.
Plus working part-time, keeping 'house', taking care of my family does not leave a lot of cash lying around or spare time to just 'catch a flight' (a long flight) to indulge in a week of Quilting bliss.
I once had a friend attend a week long Quilting retreat overseas and it cost her several hundred dollars for the tuition, plus a few more hundred dollars for acccomodation, not to mention more money for all the materials, travel, taxed etc...
And.... then she had to pay for lunch and dinner, and did not really get a chance to talk much with her Quilting role models- basically the retreat was so full....
So why did I have a 'Bee in my Quilting Bonnet'?
I was disappointed.
I earnestly wanted to meet and interview famous Quilters without the heavy price tag of travel and time away from my family.
So back to my story - I went quiet and began to flip the pages of my Quilting rather quickly, then closed it and placed it back on the table rather abruptly.
My friend Sandra raised one eyebrow looked up and curisouly asked "What's up?"...
It was then, my pity party began.
Yes, I will admit it.
I whined and winged like a three-year old... about not being able to afford to fly overseas and spend time jetsetting around meeting inspirational Quilters...(fortunately I did not throw myself on the ground in an oscar-winning tantrum).
And my friend did what all good friends do.
She sat, looked at me with compassion and patiently listened.
I went into this big speech about how I had always dreamed about Inteviewing amazing expert Quilters and had held this ' dream' for so long.
I even started to rant and rave about the questions I would ask them if I ever got the chance to Interview them...
Questions like....
How they first got started Quilting....?
How they chose fabrics....?
How they designed patterns....?
What were their biggest quilting mistakes....?
How was their quilting studio set up... ?
What stories could they tell about their award winning Quilts...?
Why did they first start teaching and what 'inspired' them to Quilt...?
and...of course be able to obtain some of their amazing Quilting patterns....?
...Well, as you can imagine after I finished my long winded 'little speech.'
Sandra was deathly quiet.
Then with a cheeky smile on her face rising upon her face, she put her magazine down, stared at me in a confrontational manner and said...
"Well go for it!...Find these Amazing Quilters You Admire, Contact Them, Act Like Oprah and just INTERVIEW them!"....
To say I was astonished is an understatement.
The frown on my face turned to one of confusion and fear.
I thought she was joking.
"Ha Ha Ha!"
She wasn't.
Truthfully, Sandra exclaimed she "would LOVE to find out answers to my questions... and said she was sure other Quilters would enjoy hearing them as well"...
And, it was then she did it.
She 'dared' me.
She stared at me, focussed her eyes on me like a tiger about to pounce on its prey and dared me to contact anf Inteview at least 3 internationally Famous Quilters....
....ask them anything I wanted and record my questions and interview as proof that I went through with it.
She told me in her lovinging-est way possible to 'put up or shut up'.
"But how?" I whined and cringed...
"Well, you are always good at finding a way.....just find one!..." Sandra stated boldly.
It was then she said it...AGAIN....
Eyes fixated upon me...."Go on...I dare you." she challenged.
I have to admit I felt a warmth in my heart at her encourgement of my ability,
.... and a sense of quiet determination began to build in my mind.
I let out an anxious laugh, took a deep breath,...puffed out my chest (as you do)
and with a bit of nervous bravado, sat up straight in my chair, eyes now zoomed back upon my friend and replied as strongly as I could...
"Ok....I will!"
"I don't know how....but I will!"
'Oh boy' I thought and immediately began to think about 3 world famous quilters I could track down and have them share some of their knowledge and expertise with me.
So.... that was the start of an amazing journey I began in early March 2008 and is still continuing today.
....a challenge that has allowed me to create exclusive recorded Interviews with some of the most sort after international Quilters around the world today.

Such Quilting Greats....?
To make my long story short, I just got determined....it did cost me quite a bit of time and money...but this is what I did.
The first thing I did was to " research" and make an entire list of absolute 'legend' Quilters.
Those Quilters who quilts, designs and reputation were of a high standard and who were consistantly talked about amongst Quilters as 'exciting people to learn from'.
I just started and chose one name off my list. A Quilter I personally had admired from afar for a long time.
I contacted her and asked to interview her for an hour.
I also requested to record and share our interview. To my delight, she agreed.
I interviewed her for over an hour about everything Quilting!
It was pure quilting bliss, of which i know you can relate.
I felt like a kid in a candy store!
Instead of talking about lots of instructional things, as I am used to seeing and hearing from other quilting programs - she shared heaps of personal things to do with Quilting.
I was able to interview her and ask her any question I wanted - and she gave me terrific, honest and personal answers!
She shared with me...
...how she first got started quilting,
...and who first taught her.
We talked about Quilting design inspirations
...and where she got them from.
We chatted about great tips and techniques she uses for choosing colors and fabrics for her quilts.
We even giggled about a funny story she told me of a quilting session with her best friend when she was little....
She told me in our Interview,
A Hysterical Story About Her First Quilting Lessson, Which She Gave At Age 6 (Yes 6!),
That Ended up in Stitches...Literally!
She told me about one time when she was little, she tried to teach her best friend how to quilt -
....they had gotten out some materials, organised them into colors, and began to place fabric where they thought it should go on their quilt..
...but in the midst of this exciting lesson , her best friend stood up to reach for a piece of fabric and sat back down on the sewing scissors (ouch!)
...needless to say the Quilting lesson was abruptly interruped, adults were called for and she ended up with stitches in her bottom...!
....Hmmm now her friend always has a reminder of that very first quilting lesson and the lessons it gave.
But the little would-be quilting teacher went on to become an in-demand famous Quilter and successful publisher of many quilting patterns and books.
