Get Your Songs Placed In TV and Film

Getting your songs placed in Television shows and films can be a wonderful source of supplemental income for musicians, or even a full time income in many
cases.  These days there are endless opportunities to provide your music as background music for various mediums.  From TV shows to movies to websites and video games,
independent music is everywhere.  The music industry, like all industries, is constantly changing and evolving.  To survive, and eventually thrive, it's imperative that
you stay abreast of the where the music industry is headed and stay on top of where the demand is for your music.

Making a living as a musician can be an extremely challenging task, to say the least.  But if you're driven enough and are smart about what you're doing,
making a comfortable living is very attainable.  One of the most potentially lucrative avenues of making money as an independent musician is placing your music in media
broadcasts like TV shows and films.  And needless to say, it's very exciting to hear music you wrote being broadcast into millions of people's homes.

Getting Paid
For television shows, each time a song is used on air, a performance royalty is generated.  The royalty amount varies based on a number of factors including the length of the
segment as well as how prominently it is used.  Each performance generates both a writer's and publisher's royalty.  If you work with a music publisher you both
essentially get half of the entire royalty.  If you are able to place the music without the aid of a publisher you retain both the writer's share and publisher's share of the
performance royalty. Again, the amount varies, but to give you an example the first song I had placed was in a scene that lasted about :55 seconds on a daytime drama in 2002.
The royalty check I received for the placement was over $800.00!  Not bad for less than a minute of airtime.

Performance Rights OrganizationsIn order to get paid royalites it is essential that you join a performance rights organization.  These
are the organizations that are responsible for collecting and distributing the money that you will receive.  The two main PRO's are ASCAP and BMI.   I personally am a
member of ASCAP.

How To Get StartedWondering where to submit your music for potential placement in film and tv?  Fortunately there are LOTS of
different places to submit your music to.  There are music supervisors, music publishers, music libraries and music licensing companies that are all in need of original
music.  It's amazing how many different opportunites there actually are when you realize how many different companies there are looking for original music!  Researching
and compiling this information can be quite frustrating and time consuming though.  It can take valuable time away from making and recording music!

Over the last several years of pursuing a career in writing music for TV and Film I've compiled a very comprehensive list of places looking for original
music.  I didn't really intend to sell my list but so many people have emailed me inquiring about where to send their music that I've decided to make it available to anyone who
is interested.  I have a list  of over 100 supervisors, publishers, etc. that are all in the business of placing music in various projects - From TV and Film to Video
Games and Advertising.  I have contact information for both large, well known companies like Dreamworks and Fox Music, as well as contact information for smaller, lesser known
companies.  Each listing includes an address, phone #, contact name (when known) as well as an email address and website address when available.  Here is a sample
listing:

hours and hours of valuable time you should get the TV and Film directory!  I wish I had access to something like this when I was getting started. The list is accessible online
and you'll be directed to the information immediately after checking out.  Start getting your songs placed today!
