"SWEET SECRET"
Honoring the Rite of Passage From Young Girl to Young Woman With the Start of Menstruation

"Sweet Secret" is truly an extraordinary "How To" GIFT BOOK
written for fathers, mothers, grandmothers, sisters and other loved ones -
to give as a gift to honor a young girl's passage into womanhood.

"Sweet Secret"
by Aunt Suzanne

This sweet and earthy "How To" book
describes what menstruation is; in medical terms and in everyday terms,
how to prepare for it and how to deal with it emotionally and physically. This book includes short stories, gives advice, explains the cyclical nature of menstruation, how to decipher when it will arrive next, and how to prevent getting caught off-guard by it. Most importantly it explains that menstruation is a normal physical occurrence
- as well as a girl's Rite of Passage into womanhood. Revered by those who have read it, "Sweet Secret" began as a letter to the author's niece and has since taken on a life of its own.

Book Reviews:
Attention mothers, aunts, sisters, guidance counselors, pediatricians, public librarians, school librarians and school nurses: Sweet Secret is not only a lovely gift for a young girl about to enter womanhood, but also a well-researched and clearly presented piece on menstruation. Written in a conversational tone by the author to her niece, the little book states the facts of puberty in a witty, contemporary way. I remember the awful pamphlet my daughters received at school, and wish that this was available to them (and to me).
The title refers to Anne Frank’s lovely passage in her diary about getting her period. Anne welcomed the event and this book encourages young women to do the same. It also prepares them with important tips on hygiene, dealing with cramps, toxic shock syndrome, and PMS.  And it ever so gently reinforces the idea that menstruation should be considered a happy event and a source of pride for young women.

Following is an excerpt from "Sweet Secret"
"How might it have been different for you, if, on your first menstrual day, your mother had given you a
bouquet of flowers and taken you to lunch, and then the two of you had gone to meet your father at the jeweler, where your ears were pierced, and your father bought you your first pair of earrings, and then you went with a few of your friends and your mother's friends to get your first lip coloring: and then you went, for the very first time, to the Women's Lodge, to learn the wisdom of the women? How might your life be different?"
- quote from Judith Duerk's book "Circle of Stones" (1989)
