STOP PRESS: If You\'re Fearful Of Dealing With The Western Media this
Media Training Multi-media Ebook Is Exactly What You Need.
ARE YOU SWIMMING
WITH WESTERN MEDIA SHARKS?
Then you need _MANAGING THE MEDIA_,
the world's first multi-media e-book on media training.
A SAD EXAMPLE
Even with decades experience as a journalist I was disappointed when,
on a 2007 media training assignment in Asia, I heard the story of a
local manager who'd been hoodwinked by a Western media outfit. The TV
crew was trying to tie in militarism with a mining company this woman
worked with. They suggested her company was talking to communist
rebels even though they were 500 kilometres away.
Does it frustrate you that you've been hoodwinked, maybe lied to,
perhaps taken out of context, had your remarks ignored or been taken
advantage of by Western journalists or their producers or researchers?
The reason you, and many others, may not have won in a media encounter
is because those journalists are involved in such a competitive
industry that some of them might do anything to get "the story" (even
make it up sometimes), leaving you feeling like you're swimming in a
sea of sharks!
Back in Asia, the female employee was still being pressured by that
crew - "Would you talk to the rebels? Could you talk to the rebels? Is
it possible you could talk to the rebels?" they pressed and pressed
until, finally, this non media-trained manager gave in and, mainly for
peace, agreed that, yes, it was possible her company could talk to
these rebels.
The crew immediately finished the interview. They had what they came
for - an admission that fitted in with their pre-conceived storyline
even though that particular admission was wrong and potentially
detrimental to the company.
That manager needed this full multi-media e-book.
I've always said I would never swim with sharks, unless I was
protected, because I was in their territory. Well, this e-book is the
cage you need before going near Western journalists. I'm not saying
all of them are a threat to you - just some. But they're the ones you
need to be wary of.
Four days after we went live with this site, British Prime Minister
Tony Blair lashed out at the media, saying they were _"LIKE FERAL
BEASTS, JUST TEARING PEOPLE AND REPUTATIONS TO BITS BUT NO-ONE DARES
MISS OUT."_ You can see him at our blog,
http://www.mediatrainingebook.com/blog [1] .
Also just after we went live with this site, the coal carrier Pasha
Bulker ran aground at Nobby's Beach at Newcastle. I was involved with
the salvage operation (filming for several oil spill agencies) and
could not believe the beat-up perpetrated by the media over a
non-existent oil spill.
The newspaper headline at left, _"Pasha Bulker budged from beach but
oil spill poses environmental threat"_ was one of several that talked
about an oil spill that never happened. I was closer to the stricken
carrier than the media and I saw the oil spill agency people combing
the beach constantly looking for spilt oil but never finding any. See
more details at my blog - web address above!
If you're in Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe or an Arab region and need
to deal with Western media (whether you're Western or not) you will
benefit greatly from this e-book.
If you're based in a Western country like Western Europe, USA,
Canada, Australia or New Zealand you will also benefit greatly from
this e-book - again, whether you're Western or not.
WHICH JOURNALISTS ARE THE HARDEST TO HANDLE?
This ebook has been written by an Australian journalist and they're
regarded as the hardest to handle. It's been said that if you can
handle an Australian journalist, particularly television or radio
current affairs, then you can handle any Western journalist in the
world.
Fleet Street might be known for its tabloid press journalists and
grubby headlines and America might be known for some right-wing shock
jocks. But, if you really want to test your mettle in journalistic
jousting try an Aussie crew any day.
Have a look at this short TV news story in which Australia's Defence
Force Chief had a lot of trouble handling journalists quizzing him
over the infamous "children overboard" incident in which the
Government had claimed Asian refugees on a particular boat had thrown
their children overboard to gain entry to Australia.
That sort of media conference is not easy to handle and is typical
of how the Western media might treat you, particularly if they suspect
you of wrongdoing. It can be very much like swimming with sharks and
just as deadly, unless you know what you're doing!
This world-first multi-media e-book gives you that knowledge - the
knowledge that no journalist is going to impart. For instance, did you
know that it's your interview too, not just the journalist's? Do you
really think a journalist is going to admit that to you?
You'll benefit from:
A better understanding of how Western media operate
Increased confidence to deal with Western journalists and crews
THE ABILITY TO GET MORE FREE PUBLICITY FOR YOU AND/OR YOUR
ORGANISATION
Increased confidence to deal with people generally (job interviews,
workplace meetings, union negotiations etc)
AUTHOR\'S BACKGROUND
GRAHAM KELLY CUT HIS JOURNALISTIC TEETH IN AUSTRALIA, IN BOTH RADIO
AND TELEVISION NEWS AND CURRENT AFFAIRS. AFTER A 20 YEAR CAREER
SPANNING ALL THE IMPORTANT POSITIONS OF REPORTER, CHIEF OF STAFF,
PRODUCER, DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF NEWS AND DIRECTOR OF NEWS HE TURNED FROM
POACHER TO GAMEKEEPER AND NOW TRAINS EXECUTIVES WORLDWIDE IN HOW TO
HANDLE THE WESTERN MEDIA.
He's renowned for tough interviews that prepare you for the worst
media encounter but, at the same time, critiques that are firm, fair
but compassionate.
Globally, his media training workshops have been endorsed in CANADA,
USA, UNITED KINGDOM, THAILAND, SINGAPORE, LAOS, THE PHILIPPINES, NEW
ZEALAND and all around AUSTRALIA with many participants vowing to use
their newly acquired skills in general communications as well as in
media encounters.
Here's some feedback from recent media training workshops. These
comments will give you a better understanding of what people think of
his skills in this vital area of media training.
"EXCELLENT - GREAT REFRESHER BUT LEARNT A LOT"
Dr Stephen Judd, Chief Executive, Hammond Care
Sydney, NSW, Australia
_"THIS IS AN AREA THAT I FEAR AND I FOUND THE TRAINING CONFRONTING
BUT EXCELLENT FOR FACING AND DEALING WITH THE FEAR. BRILLIANT
TRAINING! WELL PRESENTED. INFORMATION WAS RELEVANT AND CURRENT."_
Julie Walker, Childcare Operations Manager, WPC Childcare, Woodend,
Victoria, Australia
"Very good training with lots of good, up-to-date examples. Should
have done it 10 years ago. Essential requirement for any senior or
executive manager."
Peter Albert, General Manager LXML (Oxiana Ltd),
Sepon Copper/Gold Mine, Laos
"It was called 'media training' but I felt the real relevancy for me
is in handling being 'interviewed' at any time in my day to day job
with work colleagues. It really is a good communication training
program. The use of multi-media tools was excellent and the apparent
knowledge and media background of the presenters certainly gave high
quality."
Greg Scrimgeour, Information Technology,
BHP Billiton Cannington, Australia
"I learned/acquired a good number of pointers which will guide me
through especially when facing people from all walks of life and, to
some extent, difficult people."
Sol Mari Sato, Research well done!"
Colonel Zulfiquar Ali Khan, Security
You were taken 'out of context';
You wonder where to look in a TV interview;
You're not sure how to get your points across;
You weren't really prepared and ready for the interview;
You don't like the sound of your own voice;
They're going to cross live to you but you still don't know where
to look;
The interview is ending - how do you get your main point across?
Your personal views differ to your organisation's policy;
It's talkback radio and suddenly they spring a surprise critic on
you;
What do you do if youI can't answer the question?
Added to that are the cultural differences, particularly in Asia,
Africa, Eastern Europe or an Arab country and these can make it far
too easy for a Western journalist to completely walk all over
non-Western interviewees.
In that recent Asian training, my team had to do a lot of work to
convince the workshop participants to stand up to our questioning, our
assumptions, our ill or pre-conceived notions that we were putting
forward as practice for them. To do that just wasn't in their gentle
nature or culture. Without training, they would have been very
vulnerable in any interview with Western journalists!
YOU\'VE READ THE EARLIER ASIAN STORY THAT REALLY ALERTED ME TO THE
NEED FOR THIS E-BOOK. WELL, THERE\'S MORE.
Some six months after that earlier event, another Western media
outlet approached the same mining company and asked if the several
guards they noticed at the mine site were armed. They were told they
were, but only to discourage theft from the project.
This TV crew then asked for and finally obtained more armed men by
getting local villagers involved. They then got the group to run
through the compound holding their weapons up - commando style.
Once more, the sharks had circled, eaten and spat out, like they
sometimes can when you're dealing with the Western media. Great
imagery for their TV report but nothing involved with the truth!
BUT WAIT, THERE REALLY IS MORE!
ON ANOTHER OCCASION I WAS TRAINING IN THAILAND AND I ADVISED THE
PARTICIPANTS TO CONSIDER RELIGIOUS SENSITIVITIES BECAUSE MY CHRISTIAN
CLIENT HAD STAFF SCATTERED ACROSS ASIA WHERE MANY OTHER RELIGIONS WERE
INVOLVED.
Certain satellite shows were being beamed into all the countries
represented in our training group so comments made in one country, for
instance, might not be acceptable in another country in the satellite
footprint due to these religious differences.
An important point that might not have occurred to the Western
journalists who were putting the program together for the region
rather than for individual countries.

FINAL THOUGHTS
The Third Edition
When Graham Kelly bought out the 2nd edition of Managing The Media
these were some of the comments made:
_"Managing the Media offers an insight into the media that can only
be gained through extensive hands-on experience....."_
_"Even in explaining complex ideas and shuffling his way around
media jargon, Kelly manages to write in a smooth, involving and
easy-to-read style that would be one of the best features of this
book....."_
_"His advice is very pro-active and if taken, should make any reader
into a competent user of the media. The countless anecdotes, stories
and colourful illustrations increase the entertainment value in
reading this book."_
_"In the raft of people who feel that they have the skills to pass
on these media skills, it becomes very obvious that only a few of
these providers have actually 'been there'. This is where Graham Kelly
clearly stands out with his extensive media background..."_
These attributes have been kept in the new edition of this reference
work and I'm sure you'll be pleased with its easy-to-read style and
