But There Was A Time When I Was A
Complete and Utter Failure
I graduated from PT graduate school in 1996 eager to help lots of people.
However I quickly found that I was a failure.
I was using all the information I was taught in school but it was hit or miss if I could help someone.
I took courses to get better but if the exact conditions taught in the courses weren’t present in my patient, their techniques failed to help—which was often.
I sank into a deep depression because I thought physical therapy was my life’s calling and I was failing.
I even considered quitting physical therapy for many months.
I decided to become a personal trainer at a fitness center in downtown Denver instead.
There were many times I considered quitting
Physical Therapy altogether.
I discovered a whole new population of people—those who didn’t get better with physical therapy, chiropractic, or surgery but who were motivated to stay in shape and live their lives the best they could.
These were the people who fell through our medical system's massive cracks.
I stepped back and began to simply observe— and this is when my real education began.
I saw connections I wasn’t taught before between movement and pain.
That’s when I discovered the work of Dr. Shirley Sahrmann - more on her in a moment.
It was a total game changer.
It confirmed exactly what I was experiencing in my work.
When my schooling didn't prepare me to solve my patients pain, I hit the books - and discovered Dr. Sahrmann's methods.
I took her courses and applied her information to my clients and began seeing extraordinary success.
Because I wasn’t working in a traditional clinic, I had time to go deeper with each patient, extrapolating her information and chasing down other possibilities of the causes of these movement dysfunctions.
My successes began to multiply and word got out.
Soon I was seeing more and more people at my home.
I finally felt I was figuring things out.
I was obsessed with each and every patient because in each one I knew there was a key, I just had to find it.
I became faster and faster at finding the root causes of peoples pain.
Then, suddenly I was stuck again.
How A Phone Call From a Suicidal Patient Changed Everything
As my reputation grew, patients with far more complex problems came to see me.
And although I understood their mechanical issues, something else was locking them in their patterns of dysfunction and pain that I hadn’t encountered before.
I needed something else but I didn’t know what.
It was at that time I received a phone call from a woman who had read a book I had written about my methods.
She was crying and in so much pain, she talked about suicide.
She said she read my book and agreed with everything I had to say but she still couldn’t fix her problem.
I tried to help her as much as I could over the phone but I couldn’t.
She haunted me.
A call from a suicidal patient led to the
greatest discovery of my career.
And then she called back a month later, and my life and career were changed forever.
She called to say she was completely pain free.
She said that Hanna Somatics had rid her of the crippling pain that had nearly cost her life.
I had never even heard of this.
She said one treatment with Hanna Somatics and she was 75% pain free.
I quickly researched Hanna Somatics and found basically nothing.
It was time, once again, to go back to school.
I had to basically start over again to learn the
proper way to heal my patients' pain.
All I had to go on was this woman’s story but it was compelling enough (and I was desperate enough to help these people) for me to make the leap of faith and attend the Hanna Somatics training.
It lasted 3 years and required me to be gone 10 days at a time for each session.
This was at a time we had two toddlers but luckily my wife understood I had to find out what I was missing.
Hanna Somatics provided the missing link.
They had found the same patterns of issues Dr. Sahrmann had but approached them from a different, neurological perspective.
I started immediately applying my training to my patients - I was completely blown away by the results I was getting.
I combined these two methods and my patients were experiencing less pain faster and with fewer therapy sessions.
That was my eureka moment.
So now let me quickly explain just what these methods are and why they're so revolutionary...

I approach my patients' pain Forever
I use a two-prong system to heal my patients.
The first part was pioneered by Dr. Shirley Sahrmann of Washington University School of Medicine.
She developed a system for finding the root cause of pain and ways to relieve after more than 50 years of clinical research at the university.
This proved to be a medical breakthrough, and she won a mountain of awards for her research.
She’s published 113 papers based on actual clinical research.
Which means she was dealing with real live patients, not ideas and theories.
Shirley A. Sahrmann, PT, PhD, FAPTA, is professor of physical therapy, cell biology, physiology, and neurology at Washington University School of Medicine.
Through this research Dr. Sahrmann created a system called Movement System Impairment.
Those are fancy words that are basically saying ‘how we move, stand, walk, lie down and sit tells a story’.
She was the first person to understand that how we move governs how our body feels.
She showed time and time again that by watching how a person's body moved, or how it was unable to move in certain cases, we could then deduce what was causing their pain.
She developed a set of protocols for assessing problems with the body, and how to apply solutions to fix those problems.
And that is key to understanding why we experience pain, and why western medicine does such a poor job of relieving pain.
Unfortunately, as brilliant as she was, I believe she was missing a key piece of the puzzle too.
That piece lies between your ears...
hanna somatics uses your Mind-body connection to heal you
The second part of my system was invented by a little known but brilliant man, Thomas Hanna PhD, who developed Hanna Somatics.
It's a method of integrating the mind-body connection to release neurological tension in the body.
His theory was that most of the pain we feel is caused by how our brain (usually without realizing it) was moving and holding our body in a way that increased pain.
The mind-body connection is almost always ignored by practitioners trying to relieve your pain.
And that by learning to regain both awareness, sensation, and motor control of muscles the brain can remember how to relax and move the muscles properly.
He discovered in his practice that we often experienced what he called Sensory Motor Amnesia.
That is basically a condition of chronically-tight muscles that have learned to stay contracted due to repeated and reflexive response to stress.
This stress could be caused by accidents, injuries, surgeries, repetitive tasks, and on-going emotional stress.
And this can cause headaches, stiff or painful joints and muscles, fatigue, poor posture, breathing problems, impaired movement, accident trauma and whiplash effects, back pain, repetitive use/stress injuries.
So Hanna developed a simple and shockingly easy way of releasing those tensions, and the results have been astounding for my patients.
The result is a long-term reduction of muscle tension over the entire body resulting in fluid, easy movements.
So Movement System Impairment helps us discover problems in the bodies movements and how they cause pain.
And Hanna Somatics helps us reveal your brain's role in causing those issues.
Both schools of thought combine to form the Fixing You® approach, and no one else in the world has combined these two approaches to help heal patients.
And by combining them we have a true mind-body connection that yields stunning results.

Here’s Why We’re Experiencing
More Pain Than Ever
In my 20 years of experience in this business I’ve discovered that our movements drive much of the pain we feel today.
Part of the reason is more of us have a sedentary lifestyle.
This ends up turning off key muscle groups for long periods of time.
Eventually they just don’t turn on again.
This creates a vicious cycle: we move less, which causes pain in our movements, which discourages us from moving more!
Our movements are often causing us pain
because we move so little.
Also this lifestyle promotes tightness of other key muscle groups and joints, which then causes compensation in the form of excessive motion at other joints nearby.
Everyone knows that if something moves too much, it ends up breaking down.
The other part of the problem is that, even if we do get to move a lot during our job, we tend to do the same thing over and over again.
The results are the same—weak and/or tight key muscles resulting in a breakdown of the system.
It's not your fault, it's this modern society we've created for ourselves.
And the shocking thing is the 'pain industry' gets almost everything wrong about your pain…
No One Can Truly ‘Cure’ Your Pain Without First Understanding What’s Causing It
Yes, you hear stories of people miraculously healing from one particular exercise or treatment.
But chances are that benefit is temporary and either the pain returned later or pain occurred somewhere else due to compensation.
If you're frustrated because your doctor simply cannot resolve your pain issues it's because they've never been trained to truly discover what is causing the pain to begin with.
The problem is most practitioners are not trained to truly understand why you’re having pain.
Surgeons are trained to repair damaged tissue—not consider why it was damaged in the first place.
Chiropractors are trained to assume pain is due to a joint being out of place and fix that—not consider why it keeps going out of place.
Massage therapists are trained to break down knotted muscles—not understand why they’re knotted in the first place.
Acupuncturists are trained to use needles to release chi energy lines or points—not wonder why those lines or points are disrupted in the first place.
Pain management doctors are there because no one else has solved your pain so they try to mask it—not fix it.
Physical therapists are musculoskeletal specialists—we are trained to understand joint misalignment, knotted muscles, improving movement and reducing pain.
The problem is they were not taught how it all fits together.
Instead, we are taught that shoulder pain is one thing and elbow pain is another.
That foot pain is one thing and hip pain is another.
It’s like if you were having car trouble and took it to a mechanic and he said “Well I just do transmissions and you definitely need a new transmission.”
Would you trust his advice?
Wouldn’t it be more effective to look for a mechanic who understood how the entire car worked?

How often would that back surgeon ask how you how you move your body?
If they diagnosed you with a bulging or herniated disc, how many of them would ask “why is this disc herniated?”
Odds are they’ll start with an X-ray, find something that looks amiss, prescribe drugs and schedule surgery.
What are the odds an orthopedic surgeon will tell you
you don't need surgery?
Their entire training is built around making the patient more comfortable NOW, but rarely addressing what’s causing the discomfort.
Almost none of them could take a step back and say ‘Let’s actually see how your body works.’
To be honest, it’s not really their job.
It’s the physical therapist’s job.
It's MY job.
That’s why the chiropractor (and most other practitioners) might make you feel better after an appointment but your pain returns if you stop going to see them.
My patients on the other hand come in for about 3-4 weeks and then I usually never see them again.
Maybe they come in once a year for a tune up.
Why? Because I find out what is causing the pain, then figure out what’s going to fix it.

Lie down on your back with your legs straight out on the floor.
Go ahead.
Right now. I mean it.
Feel your back pain.
Now bend your knees so that your feet are flat on the ground or hug your knees to your chest.
Seriously. Do it. This is important!
Which position feels better for your back, legs straight or knees bent?
99% of you will say “knees bent”.
This is basically telling you that your low back is too arched.
Lying down with knees bent reduces the arch in the back, and if that reduces your pain it shows that your lower back is too arched.

It's much easier than you think!
Now you know a major reason why you have back pain.
But if you were reading carefully, you should know that’s not enough.
You need to ask, “Why is my back too arched?”
Let me show you one reason your back is too arched.
On the left he has his knees locked, notice how arched the low back is? Note how this protrudes the belly and puts a strain on the entire spine to hold the body upright. Now look at the photo on the right. The only difference is the knees are slightly bent. Note how on the photo on the right the spine looks relaxed and natural.
Stand up for a few seconds and look at a picture on the wall in the room.
Notice how your back feels—probably achy or stressed a little.
Now pay attention to your knees.
They’re probably locked straight or even slightly backward.
Unlock those knees a little and see what this does for your low back.
Does it feel a little less achy? A little less stressed?
Stand there for just 15 more seconds with your knees unlocked.
Now lock your knees again.
Do you feel how your back just arched a little and tightened up?
It might even feel painful now.
So what have you just learned?
That your back feels worse when it is arched too much.
And that your normal standing pattern—locking your knees—makes your back arch too much.
Wow! That was easy right?
Therefore your normal standing habits are contributing to your back pain!
Imagine if you fixed this one simple little problem all day long…
Many of my back pain patients feel better by just making this one small change.

Interlace your fingers in front of you as if you were about to pray.
Notice which thumb is on top of the other. Now separate your hands again.
This time, interlace your fingers so that your other thumb is on top.
It feels a little weird right?
But what if just changing simple little things relieved your pain in a matter of hours?
And what if I told you these new movements would give you that ‘Oh yeah, that’s way better’ feeling in a matter of days?

We’re going to identify, right in the comfort of your own home, just where your back pain originates.
Usually this can be done with just 3 moves.
The first one is related to the rotation of your thigh bones!
You might feel pain in your back, but it could originate in your thigh bones.

Here's a textbook case of pelvic tilt. This can cause pain throughout the lower back and legs. I'll show you to fix it with a few easy exercises.
I’ve already talked about two of the biggest problems: too much arch in the back and the shape of your thigh bones.
You did the back-arch test earlier, and even if you didn't notice some relief from that I can still help you.
The third test has to do with seeing if one side of your pelvis is higher than the other, and whether one side of your rib cage is lower than the other.
This is a simple test and often is a pattern associated with sciatic pain or SI joint pain, or back pain on one side of the back, or hip pain—there are a whole bunch of aches and pains this problem causes!
No other program or therapist, for that matter, is going to look at these three tests or how YOU move, how YOUR body works, and YOUR specific issue.
Then, we’ll address how to fix it.
part two of FIXING YOU®: The Fix
Next I’ll walk you through the simple and easy fixes to your pain problems.

Key Stretches—no general stretches here. You are targeting muscle groups that are proven pain generators. And these gentle, easy stretches will have you pain-free in no time. Specific Strengthening exercises—there are a few very specific strengthening exercises that most people don’t know that correct major problems. These don’t involve heavy weights or expensive machines, anyone can do these almost anywhere. Taping techniques—sometimes we all need a little extra help and taping is a powerful intervention to get you to change how your body is moving. You’ll be shocked at how a simple piece of tape can relieve pressure and stress in your body, in a matter of minutes. Identifying and changing bad habits—these are often the roots of most pain. I’ll show you how to first NOTICE what is causing your pain, and then train yourself to change those patterns. Hanna Somatics movement lessons— I include hours of powerful tension-reducing movement lessons to relax patterns of locked muscles in your body. You can easily distill these lessons down to a few simple movements that help you.

This simple stretch can relax the muscles attached to the pelvis and resolve issues related to pelvic tilt
These easy recommendations will ease your pain almost immediately, and your pain should be entirely gone in a few days if you keep them up.
Here’s an example.
As we talked about before, many people have low back pain due to pelvic tilt.
The pelvis gets tilted from sitting in a position that shortens the thigh muscles and tightens the muscles around your waist.
I’ll show you a five minute exercise that can release these muscles, straighten your pelvis and relieve your back pain.
If you set a routine to do these exercises daily for just a week or two, your pain could disappear forever.
And you can come back to it anytime the pain returns.

If you are suffering from back pain, then I highly recommend this book.
Rick does a good job making the distinctions between different sources of back pain and then gives stretches and exercises to specifically address each source. I read and re-read parts of the book to better understand what might be the source of my back pain. If you are like me and not very familiar with anatomy, then there are some new words that you need to learn.
The book has a glossary in back with definitions, so that helps along with re-reading sections of the book. After a short while doing some of the stretches, I have already noticed a reduction in my back pain. This is very encouraging to me.
In the past, I bought some other books (including "The 7 Minute Back Pain Solution") and I diligently tried to follow the exercises and stretches, but even after a few months of trying it, they did not do much for me. "The 7 Minute Back Pain Solution" book just offers a cookie cutter approach to all back pain and does not distinguish between different sources of the pain and specific ways to address those sources.
All the stretches and exercises are the same for all situations in that book. Rick's book was much better to help pinpoint specific causes of back pain. I was also encouraged to read in this book that even with structural damage to the spine, it is still possible to reduce or even eliminate back pain.
I even e-mailed Rick to try to get some suggestions for my specific situation and he responded back promptly with more information to try to help me. I was really impressed!
