Using Host Gator to create CaseStudyDatabase.com, instead of our other web host, saved time and money from the start.




CaseStudyDatabase.com is a website where people can research whether or not a product works before actually buying it. By reading case studies submitted by Contributors who’ve had success with the product, consumers not only find the confidence they need before making a purchase, they also find a proven approach that they can learn from.

THE CHALLENGE


It started when we purchased a server-side script (AdSpy Pro) that our web host couldn’t support. The software required a MySQL version of 4.1 and a PHP version of 4.0.2 or higher–both of which our web host had failed to provide. And when we emailed support to see if they would upgrade our server, several days went by without a response. Then somebody mentioned Host Gator as an alternative with an up-to-date server, and great customer service. For only $9.95/month we found the plan that we needed–and signed up immediately!

THE APPROACH


Our first priority was to get the script up and running. After logging into the control panel (or “cpanel”) and getting acquainted with its layout and features, we began installing the script. That led to a question about “cron jobs”; one that required a bit of help. Within seconds, we were in a chat session with Host Gator’s support team and getting answers to all of our questions. This was a feature that our other web host did not have. In fact, we were still waiting for them to respond to our first email.

While the other web host did have Fantastico running, the scripts that they included weren’t always up-to-date. And some of the scripts they offered didn’t even work!

Making the switch from a free email autoresponder to Aweber’s paid service made all the difference for SideshowAuctions.com

SideshowAuctions.com is home to one of the strangest ebooks about eBay selling ever written. Its official launch was in November, 2006 and ever since then, it has helped countless readers create unusual auctions that attract large traffic.

THE CHALLENGE


Maximizing the Click Through Rate (CTR) in our promotional emails was always a challenge that never went away. We would send several emails to large portions of our list, and then never hear back from them. And these were people who’ve already said that they were interested, and waiting to hear from us. Then we realized… many of our emails just weren’t getting through. Advanced email filters, along with the unreliability of the autoresponder that we were using (it came free with our web host), had us worried that launch day would be a disaster!

So, we hurried our research. After reading around and speaking with lots of successful email marketers, the choicest autoresponder became clear: Aweber was the way to go.

THE APPROACH

As a side note, we also tried positioning the opt-in form on our sales page in a way that eventually became very effective: as a bonus. After listing 3 product bonuses that the customer would receive with their purchase, we threw in the opt-in form to our newsletter as “Bonus #4″…one that the reader could receive right now! And judging by the results we got, the added value of this technique paid off.

THE RESULTS


Launch day was a complete success. We limited our announcement to just one affiliate (with a gigantic email list), and opt-ins shot through the roof! Using Aweber’s fast, automated form along with our special “bonus” technique, we were able to capture about 96% of every visitor the affiliate sent us.

Shortly after the launch date, we tested the system with 3 broadcast emails to the biggest list we’d ever had. The result? Only 2 emails were unable to get through this time—and Aweber was the one to tell us about them (they have a special feature). Within the mass number of emails that did go through, we used special tracking software to see how many people clicked the links. And we are happy to report a 300% lift in our CTR having everything to due with how many more emails actually got through.
