Panic Attacks: My Story

I experienced my first panic attack at the age of eighteen. At the time, I was a newly enrolled university student enjoying all the social freedoms being a student afforded. As part of this new found freedom, I would often unwind at the weekend by socialising with friends over a few drinks. It was during one of these sessions that my panic attacks first started.

It was a busy Saturday night. My friends and I decided that we needed to drown out the nagging anxiety of unfinished essays and assignments by heading to one of the more popular nightclubs in town. As we stepped in, a comforting wave of deep bass vibrated through our chests. The floor reverberated under our feet as a sea of people swayed backwards and forwards on the dance floor. Scattered amongst the canopy of heads were a few outstretched hands clutching glasses, occasionally throwing the contents upwards into the air before it rained down on the crowd below. This was, no doubt, a great way to escape reality.

As the night progressed I began to notice a feeling of unease gradually sweep up through me. It made me feel light-headed, anxious, and caused me to be hyper-aware of my surroundings.

I couldn’t distract myself and found my mind concentrating intensely on these feelings and sensations. Then, as if I had reached some sort of tipping-point, I experienced a sudden need to get myself out of the nightclub. I can still remember the feeling of absolute terror coursing through my veins as I pushed a path through people to reach the exit door.

The doors flew open and I barely had enough time to take a big gulp of fresh air when my heart rate suddenly spiked, the feelings of terror and panic completely consumed my body, I couldn’t breathe. I clutched my chest as a sharp stabbing pain flashed its way down my upper body. My heart felt like it was about to explode out of my chest when these horrible thoughts began to race through my mind. Was I having a heart attack? Maybe it was some sort of stroke? Or was my body completely shutting down? This lasted for what felt like hours but in reality was only a couple of minutes.

For the following six months after the initial attack, the intensity and frequency steadily increased. On bad days I would experience multiple attacks, causing me to become insular and isolated from friends and family. Over a period of 6 years, the panic attacks completely changed who I was as a person, forcing me to avoid situations that made me feel anxious. I often remember feeling as though I was a hostage to my own state of mind.

I found it very difficult to explain panic attacks to others, as they are both subjective and very personal experiences. However, they can basically be described as experiences of emotions and feelings that cause physiological sensations. For me, this manifested as an overwhelming surge of adrenaline, causing my airway to tighten, pains in my chest, shortness of breath and a dramatic increase in heart rate.

Losing control over my own body was terrifying. I initially thought that there was something physiologically wrong with my heart. After experiencing nearly daily episodes over the proceeding nine months, I decided to book an appointment with a cardiologist. The doctor ran a few tests to investigate checking my pulse, measuring my blood pressure and conducting an electrocardiogram to measure my heart rhythm. To my surprise the results came back as normal. I had a healthy resting blood pressure and a healthy heart rhythm. The doctor informed me that I was likely experiencing panic attacks, most likely brought on by stress. He advised me to try and avoid stressful situations and not consume any alcohol or caffeine for a few weeks, to see if it would help.

I vividly remember leaving the consultation with a huge weight removed from my shoulders. There was nothing wrong with my heart! This reassurance initially stopped the episodes from occurring and some normality began to return to my life. I was enjoying life again, free from the fear of panic attacks and able to do whatever I pleased. It was all going so well until one day when I was running on a treadmill.

It was a cold winter's evening when I decided to kick myself into gear and go for a run on the treadmill located in the garage. It was during this intense exercise that I began to feel uncomfortable. I experienced shortness of breath and started to get a shooting pain running down the left-side of my chest. I Immediately jumped off the treadmill and walked outside to get some fresh air. As I stepped outside I doubled over, clutching my chest. A sense of dread and panic came over me and my heart started beating extremely fast. The panic attack lasted for 30 seconds. My fear had been realised, they had returned.

Despite knowing that I was physiologically healthy and that the panic attacks were completely irrational, I slowly began to avoid exercising. Avoidance began to creep into other areas of my life, in the hope that it would stop the panic attacks. I began to withdraw from all situations that would cause my heart rate to increase. These were generally things that I found scary or exciting, such as flying, hiking up mountains, speaking in front of an audience, or engaging in social situations. Before I knew it, the fear of experiencing a panic attacks had wormed its way deeply into my life.

Three years passed and not only was I still experiencing panic attacks but they were getting worse. I knew I had to do something, I just didn’t know what. I spent hours trawling internet forums, websites, and the surrounding scientific research literature, to try and find an answer. I came across pharmaceutical treatments, like beta-blockers, that addressed the symptoms of the panic attack but didn’t address its root cause.

Looking back now, with the experience of both a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in psychology, I know exactly why the panic attacks returned. I had received confirmation from the doctor that there was nothing physiologically wrong with my heart but I had neglected to address the psychological conditioning that the I had imposed on myself. I realised that what was happening in my mind shared astonishing similarities with one of the most famous psychology experiments in history.

In the 1800’s Dr. Pavlov ran an experiment with dogs in which he would ring a bell directly before the dogs received food. After numerous times pairing the ringing of the bell to the action of receiving food, the dogs eventually became conditioned to expect food at the sound of the bell. In a similar way, I had learnt to associate panic attacks with an increase in my heart rate. When I exercised intensely, naturally increasing my heart rate, my body responded with the conditioned panic attack response. Making me feel as though I was dying, causing chest pain, and shortness of breath.

Using my knowledge of psychological techniques and combining them with physiological techniques that I had researched, I overcame my panic attacks and have been free of them for four years. The same techniques I used have been outlined in the Don’t Panic Program. They are both easy to understand and simple to implement.
